I flew the Metro 3/23,with 19 passengers, for a year. One of the most challenging airplanes I've flown in my 21 year, 19000 hour career. It is in NO WAY, a single pilot airplane! What a cheap, dangerous airline.
@@CommercialPIC yeah ok, i had 6000 hours by the time I started flying a metro, mostly pic on turbo props. This is not a beginners aircraft. I now am capt on the 777 for 7 years, the metro is harder to fly.

I was with LTL freight company, but driving trucks and not flying. And as well as driving, we also had to "work freight", loading and unloading the trailers. And we did get "items" of freight that was out of the ordinary and interesting all the time. And with the air freight I would imagine the freight to be just as varied if not more so. Items sent on air freight are there because of the need for quick transit. This makes me think of items that could be expensive, rare, of great priority, of high necessity, and in many other ways that made them this item of high priority to ship fast at a higher cost.

As a UPS employee and aviation enthusiast working in the mountain region, I've always wondered about how we get our air packages out to the less populated areas of the state. I always assumed it was something like how you wonderfully described and showed. So it was nice to see it. I don't work at the airport but I would eventually love to work there. People have no idea how much goes into getting their packages to them on time. Thanks for sharing.
I understand the Metro III can be a real bad girl especially VFR in the Rockies and by yourself, but these tough early-career hours quickly make an unquestionably superior pilot. Stay with it and best wishes. Thanks for posting.

. This aircraft was not equipped with autopilot, and flying through turbulence, bad weather or other conditions is extremely tiring and exhausting, because you need to have ' hands on ' control all the time. Very easy aircraft to fly in favourable weather conditions though.
I hope you advance quickly onto regular FAR 121 operations with two pilots in a modern aircraft. Flying the Metroliner commercially in Colorado with bad weather and high average elevation with little to no automation as single pilot in IFR conditions pushes the workload up to 11. There is basically zero margin of error, even for experienced pilots.
You're absolutely correct in your statement here! Some RUclips, 'Top Gun', know-it-all, and self-proclaimed, pilot lays claim to being able to fly this notoriously difficult aircraft, single-pilot in adverse weather and conditions, with no difficulties at all. This aircraft is a known pilot- hater and has little tolerance towards even professional pilots during it's handling and constant hands- on requirement. You are very correct in your summary of thie handling of this aircraft

I started out flying mostly cargo on C208's in Alaska in the 90's. It was actually some of my most fun flying. I"m at Delta now and making a lot more money, but sometimes wish I could be back there.
Typical feeder route. Brings back fond memories. Back in the 1990s used to fly L-410s MGGT-MSLP-MHTG and back with a similar schedule, not single pilot but challenging. Still a freight-dog but the B757 automation does most of the heavy duty for me these days. Great video!
Raj Van Sluytman Autopilot systems take up usable weight that could be used to carry more freight, plus they require maintenance. Freight Dog airplanes are strictly no frills.
8literbeater Recommendation? You’ve got to be kidding me! I was a pilot, I had to fly those old ill equipped planes. If it was up to me we would have been flying newer, much better equipped aircraft. I was making a statement of how it was, absolutely not recommending how it should have been.
Dude, build those hours and get out. Starting work when it’s dark is normal for a pilot. But having some 6 or 8 hour split shift when you probably can’t sleep then finishing work when it’s dark again sounds pretty dodgy.

Don't forget the part about how your "pressured" to fly into bad weather (because we know those Amazon packages must be delivered) because if you refuse a flight because of a safety concern, you risk loosing your job! Of course they will deny this for fear of FAA. Pilots will tell you the truth though, if they are not in fear of loosing their job!
That's a thing of the past. I flew feeder cargo for a while (Not for this place). I didn't have any concerns about retaliation for delaying or canceling a flight for a legitimate reason. In fact, I worked with a guy who used to bail on flights for ridiculous reasons all the time. No issues. There is already tremendous turnover as folks ditch them for the regionals as soon as they get their time. They need to retain all the pilots they can.

Ryan Padgett at least they could save weight putting in glass and getting rid of vacuum pumps. Might be enough weight saved for an autopilot. I imagine the most weight of the autopilot comes from the trim servos. Are these planes manually trimmed?
Autopilots add to the aircraft. Not so much the weight but the complexity and there for the maintenance costs. To retrofit an exsisting qircraft could cost over half a million dollars per plane.
Very few places that fly Metro's have autopilots. Whether cargo or not. Been at 3 different companies with metros. At the current one we have a couple that still have autopilots. Usually when they break though most companies just say "no more autopilot sorry". Not sure if the Metro's is specifically difficult compared to other turboprops.
I wouldn't wear the reflective vest while flying. If there is a fire, it will melt on you and get all over your hands burning the sh*t out of you. I speak from experience.
my brother you deserve a huge reward. ive only got 145 hours on cessna 172. i was shocked and impressed when u said SINGLE PILOT AND NO AUTO PILOT. all your flying is manual. wowwwww!..and your pilot skills skyrocket! that sounds like hardcore experience..keep it up bro!
I fly in the corporate and charter sector and while I love my job...I sometimes envy you guys. While I not saying it’s easy or you don’t have your frustrations by any means...some of the “people” you deal with in my day to day operations (CEO types and extremely wealthy) sometimes leave a frustrated or bad taste in my mouth. Not all of them by any means... but like I say, sometimes I miss just me and the airplane like you experience everyday. Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
That’s #1 reason I don’t want to go corporate. Well... #2 reason. #1 is either being married to the aircraft if it has a small flight crew where your days off are only behind you (you can’t plan anything because the boss might want to go to Palm Springs last minute) or the bigger depts and fractional who want to get value out of the airplane so they Charter it out and you live out of a hotel on an airline schedule without the pay or perks and a lot more BS (grooming, dealing with people, calling for FBO services, etc).
Flew cargo before corporate. I rather exercise while handling boxes than not exercise while babying my demanding bosses. Some managers are arseholes and they sort of threat their limo drivers nicer than the pilots.. Jealosy. or Penis envy is called..
Honestly you sound like the perfect company man....... don’t wear that vest when flying..... if will melt in a fire..... no autopilot and intentional high task loads for pilots is asking for trouble.... they are just trying to save money.... once you have the hours run away as fast as you can
Just subscribed tonight. Your career reminds me so much of the show “Flying Wild Alaska”. It takes true grit and dedication to do the work that you have chosen to do. No autopilot? Brave, very brave but it teaches you to rely on your training rather than letting the machine do half of the work. Enjoyed watching. Safe skies. 🛫🌌
Nice in depth video. I worked at DHL and we called these planes feeders. They would bring cargo from smaller airports to LAX overnight. We had a contract with Ameriflight that had similar/same planes as Key Lime but with no windows. I didn't know pilots touched freight thought the rampers loaded/unloaded...😃

I used to drive by your planes at Centennial while pursuing my sport pilot license at a flight school there. Have always thought the Metro III was a beautiful bird (although I thought I was going die on one once!) Nice video!
The pickle. I work at my local fbo and we had one of key lime airs merlins crash. Was a really sad day. Pilot was a really good dude who had just had a kid. Be safe out there
Enjoyed the video I have traveled as a passenger on Metro's many times with Bearskin Airlines in Northern Ontario Canada and wasn't aware that they do not have AP, you guys who fly these are very skilled pilots!
John Morris , some do have autopilot, the DHL and UPS Metos had it and many others. Those airplanes are still around flying , of course no longer owned or operated by them.
John Morris I flew the Metro at the Bear from 99 to 05. We always flew two pilot and only one had an autopilot that would lose the plot in pitch especially with an aft cg. It’s crazy to hear they fly single pilot no autopilot. Much respect to those fellas.

Great video and thank you for making this, it reminds me of the old days when I was a cargo pilot. It has its ups and downs, but I hope you find something much better. Take care.
So basically, the higher ups don't wanna spend the dollars to bring their aircraft up to current capability and then someone makes video trying to convince us all that it's somehow "better, or safer" with single pilot in congested air space with steam gauges. Stop bro. No need to kiss that bosses ass here.
Agreed. In todays day and age of Aviation, there is no excuse for this kind of operation, the technology exists to make things safer and easier for single pilots, use it. And this video really doesn't help, they're trying so hard to sell this job to newbies, but to me this job looks like living hell and honestly scared me a bit.
While I agree, in fact with customers single pilot IFR requires a working autopilot, (at least in Canada) it's a metro thing. Most companies I know have no autopilot and fly two crew instead. metros are old
There are a few great books about Freight Flying , Freight Dog , A Cargo Pilots Life -Tails From Corrosion Corner stand out. Your comment is rather naive. As long as there are hard core low time Pilots , they will RUN to build time in outfits like this. The bottom line is always money. Is it scary? Sure. But low time or even high time guys love the life and difficulty of this challenge
Hand flying analog cargo planes, what else could you ask, best job ever, much safer and much though also to fly than those computer pilots they have nowadays.
Trust me. You pay your dues flying the metro III. Nice Key lime air offers a real crew house. Back in the day it was static motorhomes/ 5th wheels...lol
Loved the video. I always find it humorous when pilots speak on the radio and I can't catch a single word but then half the time when shopping at walmart I don't understand a word that comes over the intercom. That aside, I really enjoyed the video and the slice of life you provided. It brings a smile and new info learned. Thanks.
I'm currently looking at going the ATP route of becoming a pilot. I absolutely love this video since i currently live in Colorado and absolutely geeked when i realized that there are cargo opportunities out here in Colorado. I hope i can live this dream one day.
My local airport runs one of these and you always double-check the seatbelt lol, far more clunkers than good landings, and the way it sways under deceleration makes it feel as if it is going to tip onto its wings.
I agree and disagree with different aspects of the video. I AGREE that this is the best stivk you'll ever be in your career... The FOs I get who come from places like Ameriflight are great pilots. I DISAGREE with going single-pilot hard IFR with no autopilot. That is just begging for trouble. Dual crew with no ap, or single pilot with a functioning AP, both completely doable.

This is pretty common in freight flying. I've known a few people who have left freight flying because the workload made it unsafe in their opinion. Still, for the right person, I think it is great experience.
I have to agree. This airplane shouldn’t be flown single pilot, let alone in IFR and with no AP. Give them a damn AP Key Lime! When the guy is single engine, in the clouds, it will save a life.

Duct Tape 1 thru 7- a fleet of beat up Cherokee 6's flying film, bank checks all at night. Depart around midnight. Make your stops then watch the sun burn your corneas as the sun came up. What's this thing you call an auto what? Mark 12 radios, VOA4 nav heads (when they worked) GPS? What was that? Weather? Well, if you don't want to go, we'll send your last check (all $900 a month on a good month) to you. ADF was the most reliable instrument in the plane (when it worked like nothing else did) Did work with a guy that flew the Metroliner 35 yrs ago. 2 pilot op's. He loved it, but NOT a single pilot IFR workload. He's still alive; I'm still alive ... hope you stay that way too.
The advantage of analog instruments is that you know if you are on-altitude and on-airspeed without directly looking at the instruments. You can see them out of the corners of your eyes without staring at them. Glass altitude and airspeed tapes are always in motion and you have to focus directly on-them to determine if you are in stable flight.

Everyone: “flying is so much fun”
No one: “Loading cargo is one of my favorite things about this job”
I understand the Metro III can be a real bad girl especially VFR in the Rockies and by yourself, but these tough early-career hours quickly make an unquestionably superior pilot. Stay with it and best wishes. Thanks for posting.
Would the experience help you gain a better position?
Respect for cargo Metro aircraft pilots! This is a notoriously difficult aircraft to fly and requires a lot of hands-on flying.

I keep reading this, "notoriously difficult". Why? I didn't find it all that difficult to fly, and I am as average a pilot as you can find.
I agree entirely Axel. Thankfully I have moved on from this company since recording. I couldn’t have said it better. 👌🏻
I faced many rough times in life and I still motivate my self to become a pilot one day

Full days work and another $125 bucks minus taxes in your pocket...Key lime you rock!
Damn, even the DC-3 had some kind of autopilot.
Raj Van Sluytman Autopilot systems take up usable weight that could be used to carry more freight, plus they require maintenance. Freight Dog airplanes are strictly no frills.
@@jimgood1949 that's called stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime.
8literbeater Absolutely. But, I take it that you don’t know the operators of very many small air freight companies.
@@jimgood1949 what does that have to do with your recommendation?
8literbeater Recommendation? You’ve got to be kidding me! I was a pilot, I had to fly those old ill equipped planes. If it was up to me we would have been flying newer, much better equipped aircraft. I was making a statement of how it was, absolutely not recommending how it should have been.
Worked at Sweringen Aircraft San Antonio 1972-1975.
We built quarter panels, fuselage, nose gear, wings, good to see II's and III's are still around

Scott which company did you work for?

I fly a jet for a regional. Watching this makes me glad I have my job. :)
Mate. Your day is exactly the same as a Metro driver in New Zealand working for Air Chathams. Cheers.
Personally I think your company should add in autopilots etc to improve safety margines for yourselves the aircraft and freight carried...imo Laurie
My dad flew cargo. Said they didn’t install autopilots because that 7 pounds adds up over 5 planes and a year of flying.
Erik De Lamarter not really sure about the trim but all that would cost a lot of money that these companies don’t really want to fork over
Very few places that fly Metro's have autopilots. Whether cargo or not. Been at 3 different companies with metros. At the current one we have a couple that still have autopilots. Usually when they break though most companies just say "no more autopilot sorry". Not sure if the Metro's is specifically difficult compared to other turboprops.
Thank you for this. Congratulations! You're living the dream.
I wouldn't wear the reflective vest while flying. If there is a fire, it will melt on you and get all over your hands burning the sh*t out of you. I speak from experience.
.We wear them whenever we're walking around on the ramp or doing the exterior inspection.
The majority of pilot uniforms are maybe of polyester to rayon. It’s kind of a moot point.
MEH!
my brother you deserve a huge reward. ive only got 145 hours on cessna 172. i was shocked and impressed when u said SINGLE PILOT AND NO AUTO PILOT. all your flying is manual. wowwwww!..and your pilot skills skyrocket! that sounds like hardcore experience..keep it up bro!
Man, that's one of the best ways to become the best aviator, so true!
“Unloading the boxes is the fun part!” Dude - really? 🤣😂

I used to do that in the 1980's in Aero Commanders and others. No autopilot, no copilot, no GPS, yes scud running and lots of fun..

One of you lost a roof during a landing, and you got it down with no issue. Amazing piece of piloting.
Sure was! Thanks for watching and commenting. 😎
Rode with Bearskin on the Metroliner from Winnipeg to Lynn Lake back in 2008. Great service!
John Morris I flew the Metro at the Bear from 99 to 05. We always flew two pilot and only one had an autopilot that would lose the plot in pitch especially with an aft cg. It’s crazy to hear they fly single pilot no autopilot. Much respect to those fellas.
Not a pilot, but the only thing I see glamorous about this job, is the beautiful plane in green.
Key Lime Air? I would have assumed a Florida outfit. Lol.
Yeah, that was my first thought as well.

Great video and thank you for making this, it reminds me of the old days when I was a cargo pilot. It has its ups and downs, but I hope you find something much better. Take care.
Thank you for the ride and tour sir.
Most companies I know have no autopilot and fly two crew instead. metros are old
I was wondering if I was the only one that felt this way. I totally agree with dan downs.
Thank you for your service, Greeting from Nebraska, thank you!
Thanks.
Brother GET THE F..... OUT OF THERE just as soon as you can !!!
I'm currently looking at going the ATP route of becoming a pilot. I absolutely love this video since i currently live in Colorado and absolutely geeked when i realized that there are cargo opportunities out here in Colorado. I hope i can live this dream one day.
You should! I wish you the best and hope you accomplish your dreams
It wasn't too many years ago that a person had to pay Key Lime to be an FO in the SW4. Now, I see it's the other way around.

That's pretty intense. Flying single pilot in actual IMC no autopilot is pretty taxing on the aviator. I understand people do it all the time (I personally dont care for it) but as other people have commented your company should get autopilot installed. Its safer. Thanks for this video.
Great job, you can be single pilot however i think it would be safer with a good GPS and an autopilot.

I don't feel I missed a thing by not moving on. I feel blessed beyond belief after seeing this young man beat his brains out every day loading and flying both. He has my respect for doing it but I pray it's just a time builder. R not for freight lmao.
Evan Jackson I flew single pilot 135 for years. We had them.
No commercial aviation in my country without 1st officer and AP. Thats the way it is. Becoming a commercial pilot here is a long, arduous and expensive process. As a consequence we have the highest safety record in the world. You are looking at 2000 hrs before you get in the left seat.
In a dramatic reversal this is probably a sought after job now...

Solo hand flying is the absolute best way to build and hone your skills as a Pilot.
Your judgement, decision making, planning, etc, will be improved way more than if you were two crew flying with an automatic pilot engaged.
Thank you for sharing this video.
You’re totally incorrect. Anyone flying a metro should already know how to fly. Stick skills are just a small part of flying for a living.
@@c208driver6 I respectfully disagree.
Of course the Pilot should already know how to fly the aircraft, to think otherwise is irrational!
The Pilot is hand flying a Metro, Night and SPIFR, these skills are a large part of him living to fly again!
c208 Driver it’s better to feel the stick and response of the control surfaces to get used to it at first but you are right they should be experienced already
Very informative. Thanks for this.
Anytime! Thanks for being here

Does that ‘crew house’ & ‘crew car’ come with a ‘crew girlfriend’?
Yes. Brutus aka “maneater” is in room 204.
Nice! Used to work at KAPA and seeing your passenger metroliners fly in and out. Sunsets are nice but I love coming into Denver at night seeing the city all lit up. Find a highway, follow it up to a landmark and see the area where I live. (couple times seeing my house from 20-25 miles away using field glasses is a bonus!) kinda hard doing that while flying and talking to ATC.
Thanks for the vid! Enjoy your office space! GO AVS!
Nothing says professional like dropping cargo out of the plane at 6:18
Nice video. I also flew metro liners doing the same thing for Berry Aviation. what an experience for sure. Lots of respect.

Worked on Metro's for years. The company I worked for at one time was flying 22 of a combination of Metro 2's and 3's. We developed the 4 blade prop conversion to make them quieter and a bit more efficient to get into or challenging northern runways. The older systems were always a challenge to keep in calibration and operating for our crews but I enjoyed the 24 years I did it.

Thanks for the video just starting out, getting my private license and I want to do Cargo and get to UPS or FedEx.
Yeah buddy... Now that's a career path that's hard to pass up. But, I'll hand it to you. Go back to the 70's. ADF was the most reliable instrument in the plane (when it worked like nothing else did)
Did work with a guy that flew the Metroliner 35 yrs ago. 2 pilot op's. He loved it, but NOT a single pilot IFR workload. He's still alive; I'm still alive ... hope you stay that way too.
Sounds like Air Aurora (callsign Borealis)...am I correct?
The advantage of analog instruments is that you know if you are on-altitude and on-airspeed without directly looking at the instruments. You can see them out of the corners of your eyes without staring at them. Glass altitude and airspeed tapes are always in motion and you have to focus directly on-them to determine if you are in stable flight.
