I opposed this after 9/11, when the large banking/mortgage co. I worked for taught us the new federal laws. We were to report clients who did certain things with their money, even though it wasn't illegal, and their name would be put on a watch list. I did speak up at the training. No one else seemed concerned. (I quit soon after.)

Privacy itself is half of the issue. The ability and willingness of these agencies to to act on what they secretly "found out" about you is the other half.
