Also based off of twoset, try swapping hands? Or flipping the flute so it goes out to the left instead. Or flipping one hand so the fingers curl in the wrong direction and in the same direction as the other hand (if that makes sense), like all the stock photos and stuff do lol. Thanks for suffering for our entertainment! You're really really good too!!
Watch some really funny stuff while playing! Eat spicy food. Also, playing guitar with frozen hands, is crazy. My flutes skills wouldn't be hurt by cold, they aren't impressive. I'm learning 'Histoire sans paroles' - Harmonium in it's original key now. Do you know that song? ... Go Katie!
As a flutist, the worst thing that happened to me was swallowing wrong just before going on stage and inhaling a bit of saliva making me cough. That feeling doesn't go away for a while and makes it difficult to get a breath while playing without coughing again.
@@ilikecatsbutimallergictoth1856 I think the density difference of helium does affect the sound because it would travel at a different rate than air would. So yeah, it's the character of the media blown into the flute. The Flute Channel has a video playing the flute with helium, kinda funny! ruclips.net/video/zHb4Tn97JNA/видео.html
it does change, because the air travels faster, i've seen it on other instruments, the helium does infact change the sound of the instrument, not only your voice
As a clarinet player that was a funny one to me. I get super sweaty and I can't imagine having to keep my instrument at my face like that. Good luck to you
As a flute player who has been playing for 6 years, I seriously admire your playing skills. I hope I can become like you when I get older. You are so talented.
Love this! I actually had to play with no feeling in my mouth once. My tooth broke the day of my first flute exam. It couldn't be rescheduled and I couldn't play with half my tooth. I had to go to the dentist to have it fixed and the numbness wasn't gone yet by the time it was my turn in the exams. It was a really strange thing, because you have no idea where the lip plate is and how you are doing on embouchure and airstream (don't know if that's the right word). I did make it through though and I passed the exam! It was quite an experience, but it can be done! This was in my second or third year of playing flute
No crazy practice for me, thank you (had a really sweaty concert last year, 1,5 hours and we had 35°C - 96°F) - BUT you could check the last Twoset-Video. The flute players do nice moves that are nearly impossible on flute without losing the intonation (it works with a lot of concentration on the head movement). I have a question - new flute player (abt a year) and I was wondering how I can actually play the flute well. I always have trouble with high notes and I always miss notes. You are incredibly talented and I would love it if you gave me some advice!
I'm not as good as Katie, but I've been playing for about 10 years and while practice is basically the key to improvement, I know that vague advice isn't always helpful. To help with technique, practice your scales. have a set amount of scales that you do every day. One day, you'll do major scales, the next day, melodic minor, then harmonic minor scales, then chromatic (for example). Find a rhythm that covers all the scales you need to know - ask your teacher to give you a list if they haven't already. Practice regularly - a little bit every day is so much better than randomly doing 3 hours practice in one hit at a whim. Practice with a metronome to ensure you're playing notes evenly - if you're not, it'll just sound messy. Start slowly, then increase tempo. Practice makes perfect, yes, but practice also makes permanent. Avoid repeating things that you stuff up all the time - if you do this, mistakes become muscle memory very quickly. Work out which transitions aren't working. For instance, you can probably go from F to G fine, but you might struggle when going from C to D or D to E. When you identify transitions that aren't working, play them as slowly as it takes to get it neat. Then gradually increase tempo. A handy trick for increasing tempo is to play your scale so that you vary the speed of your transitions. Let's say you're practising the F major scale. Play F to G as fast as you can. Hold the G for however long you need, then do A to Bflat as quickly as possible, then C to D, and continue this up and down the scale. Then go back to the beginning of your scale. Play F, then transition from G to A as quickly as you can, then B flat to C and continue. You can use this technique to help you get tricky runs, scales and arpeggios get up to speed. Then, play with the metronome normally (all notes even length) and continue to increase your tempo. For octave jumps, you just have to rehearse them. Pay attention to the position of your tongue/soft palette/etc when you're playing the lowest C. This is going to be tricky at first - your teacher will probably exclaim in joy that you played a note well and ask you to describe what you changed, and you'll have no idea. Play notes in higher registers, nice and slowly and pay attention to the quality of sound. Play any note, and then play the same note an octave higher. Go another octave higher, and as high as you can go. As you do, you will be able to feel the muscles in the back of your throat moving. Try to slur these octave jumps - it will force you to think about what you're doing. Lower octaves generally use different vowel sounds to higher octaves. When I'm playing I tend to think 'ah' for first register, 'oh' for second, but your teacher can probably give you better and clearer examples of when to use the appropriate vowel sounds. Listen to players that are better than you. (Since you follow Katie, you're already doing this one! Yay!) This will keep you inspired, but it also helps you to know what kind of sound to aspire to. Don't give up! The flute is a truly beautiful instrument - I know I'm not Katie, but I hope this helps and keep playing music!!

So that first piece you played after the jumping jacks, that was crazy how many of those super-fast low notes you were playing all together!...but it didn’t look like your fingers were moving that fast.
