Thank you so much for this video. I can't put into words how much time I have spent hyperfixating on things like encumbrance, distance, and resources while prepping and playing a game. The obvious answer is never the first one of course, so setting it up like this never even crossed my mind. +1 Inspiration for you.

Thank you! I've spent so much energy trying(failing) to do things the hard way. Even using apps to calculate encumbrance or track time tend to fall off for me.

finally catching up to your videos after being way too busy (get ready for comments on the other new ones too lol)
and this one is perfect for an upcoming session!
I can't really play theatre of the mind because it takes up too much headspace trying to keep the positions correct in my head. But I can still use your suggestion of adjacent, nearby, far, or too far for when my players have yet to enter combat. Combined with your earlier map making video that actually helps me to make on the fly notes of the PCs positions vs any hazards they encounter, without having to bring up a whole combat map.
Once again, super helpful! So thanks again for putting all this work into your videos

I'm really happy that some of these tools are pointing in the same direction! I have trouble with theater of the mind sometimes, and I end up using theater-of-the-index-cards. Mike Shea talks about this a lot, just using cards that say "Mountain", "road", and "river" or anything else that might be on your landscape to give players an idea of where everything is. Then when they see the "dragon" card, they know where it's at lol

I like your zone system - I use essentially the same thing: Close Near Far & Too Far - for resources we use “usage dice” like in The Black Hack, but have them go down on a roll of 1 - we make things like torches and rations valuable by needing them to see, rest and heal while in the Underworld

Thanks for sharing that sounds like an easy and tense solution

🥳❤️👍🏿 I’m on a quest to collect at the house rules on RUclips - do you have any more that you’ve posted? I looked thru your backlog and found one that was pointedly about house rules, but it’s easy to miss them from thumbnail and title alone - alternatively, do you have any you’d make a new video about? I’m adding them all to my giant playlist that has just reached two thousand videos - thank you very much 🙏🏿

I think, if I haven’t learned the rules after all these years, I may never learn them.
I switched to The Black Hack approach where all the rules are just a few pages.

As long as I never have to teach anyone to build a character in AD&D 2E or 3.5 again I'll be happy
