We need to stop denying it, people in general are pretty shallow. There are shows like Love is Blind, Love Island, and the Balloon show. These contestants try so hard not to look like bad people, and rationalize, that they're just picky. But I think the truth of the matter is, people in general are just shallow, and absolutely will judge you on first impression alone
Thats kinda all you CAN do though. You've known this person for all of 1 hour, barely even know their last name.
You can literally ONLY make shallow assumptions because you have shallow information. Assuming anything more is presumptuous and arrogant of you to do, even on the off chance you are correct.
Humans are visual creatures so looks will always come first. "If it walks like a duck.." is a saying based completely on looks that basically says, if it looks like something, its probably that thing

I agree with the first person but I'm gonna add a little about how these shows inherently want people to be shallow. These shows aren't made for you to get to know a person for real. On an actual date you get to know the person with just you and them and then you decide weather or not you're into them beyond first impressions or physical appearance. Ballon pop is not that. You're not getting to know them. That would be boring and kinda impossible with over 50 eyes on you at once. They're playing it up for the cameras and people in the room. If it was a regular date it wouldn't draw views.
Shows like Love Is Blind are a set up to fail. There is drama in them not being physically attracted to each other that the show plays up when they see each other. That's why they have the thing where they all get together and even bring in other connections they had in the pods so they can be like "oh my gosh physically she's so much more my type". They know what they're doing. People have dated without knowing each other for years. Online dating and pen pals anyone? There are elements of those that make it work while shows like Love Is Blind don't.

The one successful balloon pop I know of is this guy with dreads that went in saying he likes anime. All the women roasted him and talked down on him, but he was respectful to each woman. He left with one girl who also watches anime and they be cute together on instagram :D

The show seems like the most toxic way to date. From the clips I've seen, a person steps out and everyone pops their ballon without asking a single question. It's just more trash tv

This show and noluvmar's antics have taught me two things:
1) Women want a tall man with at least one flaw they can admit (no obvious flaw? not human apparently)
2) Men can't take rejection from a gorgeous woman without saying she's not his type. God forbid you admit attraction toward someone who already denied interest... hOw EmAsCuLaTiNg🙄 (he said while he too was in fact a man)

I am addicted to arlette’s show. It’s definitely the best out there. Way more mature groom. They mostly try to stay respectful. But yea it’s definitely like watching a dating app play out in real life. And we are very shallow when it comes to dating. I think there’s a couple tricks to it. One is casting which Arlette has been better with. She’ll do an episode of over 30 or episode with people with kids so there’s less pops on obvious disqualifiers. Second is having your 1 minute elevator pitch (bio) down packed and knowing exactly which questions to ask

Aging myself but I never heard of this genre until recently and haven’t watched any episodes. I have a tendency to love certain reality shows but eventually stop watching once the novelty is gone. That being said, of all sub-genres of reality shows, dating ones are the ones I am least interested in…I think I find “finding and building” romantic connections so hard that I can’t bare to watch people going through these situations. That being said, I appreciate your balanced view on these shows!
Arlette is the only one most of us watch. She is a top notch professional and keeps it as classy as possible. None of the others are worth it.

I wonder if the balloon pop concept (particularly the U.K. versions) were inspired by the show ‘take me out’. Back when I was in uni/college, societies would do a faux version of take me out for Valentine’s Day. Because we didn’t have the lights they used on the show, we’d just use balloons. But it’s a very similar concept, but they’d have different rounds (e.g. a talent round, or your friends coming up and trying to convince the contestants that you were a good match).
It could be a little brutal, but nowhere near as bad as the RUclips versions

Love the analysis, these shows more so demonstrate the state of shallow and often hyperspecific standards and preferences people put on relationships. I disagree with one point you made, however, which is the suggestion that it’s a male dominant problem shown in these shows. Both gender’s have had plenty of examples of people popping their balloon for ridiculous reasons. Colorism is strong with both sides, and people will pop because they don’t like your shoes, you’re “too pretty,” not dressed well enough, etc. both sides have blown my mind with some of the insane reasoning I’ve heard to pass on an otherwise seemingly great individual.

I've been working through Arlette's series out of curiosity because I am a queer person who only dates other queer people. Straight dating seems so alien to me. Something that struck me is how frustrated I was with the female participants. I really expected it to be the other way around. There's nothing wrong with physical preferences, but every time I heard a woman on the show go "I want someone that's taller than me in heels," I wanted to yell. It just seems a bit unreasonable 😭
