Nice video, I'm glad you mentioned his awful treatment and death as well. But I would put money (at least £50) on him not being the first LGBT+ person to ever appear on a British bank note.
@@pretsel5132 So? He wasn't a lesbian, bi (well, I don't know that, but then he wouldn't be gay) or trans (since the "therapy" was forced on him). You make a great point! The "treatment" Turing was forced to undergo was to skew his hormone balance - basically, they were artificially inducing a form of gender dysphoria in him and it made him suicidal much in the way many trans people suffer from gender dysphoria. Difference is: In Turing's case the government was forcing a "treatment" on him, in the case of trans people in the UK and all over the world, governments and insurances are *withholding* necessary treament from trans people. Puberty blockers at a young age and a correct hormone regimen are lifesavers, but they are demonised in the media. This is an injustice!

It’s so sad that one of the main people that stopped to help ww2 was shamed for being himself,if I had the chance to meet him with a time machine,I would love to tell him how his invention has created computers and modern day inventions.
Ahem, good fellow person, "helped to stop" is the right order of words instead of "stopped to help". I got what ya meant, but other people may get confused.
I volunteered for a short time at the national museum of computing in Bletchley Park, great place. Yes I'm so glad you pointed out the fact of how he was treated near the end of his life( bc of his homosexuality) because most people who talk about him overlook it.
Not really. He was a codebreaker first, a normal person second, and gay third. Makes him totally different. Gays now make their entire personality and life revolve around being gay

There also seems to be a diagram of a Turing machine in 3:14 , which is one of the most important contributions of Alan Turing to computer science. It is a mathematical model of a basic computer. Any system that can simulate a Turing machine is said to be Turing-complete and therefore is theoretically capable of computing anything computers can compute.
It is a diagram of a Turing machine. The 'ticker tape' at 2:39 is also a reference to Turing machines, it's the tape that represents the machine's memory.
Thanks for discussing the tragedy that happened late in his life due to his homosexuality. All nations have sins in their past and it's appreciated when they are not glossed over or ignored.
@Robert Stallard S If you want any credability for your very uncredible statement then you need to show your sources. I have tried for the last half hour to find a source proving your comment and i found nothing. If you dont show sources then you will look like a homophobe making up stories to tarnish the reputation of a hero.
@Robert Stallard Jhon Big has a point. I too went looking for source material for your accusations and only found references to Hodges book. That's quite suspicious, especially given that people like you are now using it to imply that Turing was a pedophile. You need to apply a bit of critical thinking to what you read (maybe Hodges sources had ulterior motives?), otherwise you're the one that's an embarrassment.

One of the first video games (If not the first) was programmed for a smaller version of the ACE. A game of draughts by Chris Strachey, who went to Cambridge with Turing. It ran poorly and later Strachey asked Turing for the manual for the Manchester Mk1 which was a much better computer by memory which he gave him and allowed him to run the game successfully. So Turing has a huge connection to video games.
Alan's story hits hard for me, as I am bisexual, and I love science and math, so I can relate to him before he started taking the pills, and inevitably committed suicide, legend says it was by eating a poisoned apple, similar to how snow white almost died, and also legend says that the logo for apple is an apple with a bite in it, is a tribute to how Mr. Turing died.

@@pretsel5132 So? He wasn't a lesbian, bi (well, I don't know that, but then he wouldn't be gay) or trans (since the "therapy" was forced on him). Saying "LGBT+ person" lumps someone with all the other labels that don't apply to them. Not to mention there are for example gay people who do not agree with "trans rights", etc. If you're looking for a neutral term that can describe a person that is either gay, bi, trans, intersex, etc. then you should probably use "non-heteronormative".
@@zlosliwa_menda Saying someone is part of the LGBT+ community does not mean that all of those labels apply to them.
You may prefer the term GRSM, which stands for Gender Romantic Sexual Minority.
Also, I am aware that transphobic gay people exist.
Your videos are perfectly made! thanks for making videos for us!
I get that Dream just uploaded, but Half-Asleep Chris gets priority

Great vid Chris! Keep up the amazing work
It’s pretty good so far👍🏻

@MR.random57 shut up
Hello
@MR.random57 I'm bi. Did I scare you.
Thank you Sir Alan Turing for everything. The world owes him a lot
The engravings are the easiest way to check if a note is forged or not - its much more common for 50ies and hundreds, which we were really careful about haha
Fifties aren't that common anymore, I wish I could get my hands on this one but that would be sitting on 50 pounds which is... something I could easily spend

It’s nice to learn about British history
as lgbt youth , it’s incredibly sad to hear what the uk did to turing. he is an incredibly important person to our history and possibly the entire world , yet they did such an awful thing to him.
i’m glad they can acknowledge him , but it’s still an injustice that they refuse to do anythin about him and his legacy. especially the injustice that people like me face, where we are slowly losing our rights in the uk.
either way, he deserves this. a hero in his time and still today. a personal inspiration
What rights are you losing in the UK?
@XxobamaGamingxX. The only right the US has over UK is that someone with a room temperature Is can buy a gun.
@@xXxObamaGamingxXx trans people in general, conversation therapy is still legal, and many more

Sweden won Group E in the Euro 2020.
I finished an essay that was 2½ months late and am now done with every course in school for this year.

I will now be able to buy some flags tomorrow.
But most importantly, Half Asleep Chris posts another video about banknotes! :-D

I got to have a few chats with Tony Sale, the guy who rebuilt a working replica of one of the Colossus computers that they used alongside the Bombe machines to decrypt the Lorenz cipher, as well as getting to see the working rebuilt Bombe machine too.
Yes I'm so glad you pointed out the fact of how he was treated near the end of his life( bc of his homosexuality) because most people who talk about him overlook it.
Original and amazing banknote

thank you for this video! I really appreciate the work you did to get it up on his birthday, this is so important especially for the LGBTQ+ community!
Not really. He was a codebreaker first, a normal person second, and gay third.

@@Althomir ah that makes sense too yes, such a cool design

Thanks for discussing the tragedy that happened late in his life due to his homosexuality. All nations have sins in their past and it's appreciated when they are not glossed over or ignored.
@Robert Stallard S
If you want any credability for your very uncredible statement then you need to show your sources.
Thank you, Chris, for this wonderful video. Turing was a real hero, he saved so many lives and lost his own by stupidness of law. R.I.P., Alan.
Yay new half asleep Chris video when Ralph’s catio done?
Amazing video is always Chris! You may have had to rush to get it done, but there was absolutely no lack in quality, loved the winking banknote easter egg too!
I support Alan for being gay, I'm bisexual
And being part of the LGBT+ shouldn't have been illegal, love is love.
If you are part of the LGBT+, be you, live you life how it is, don't quit because of this,
Being gay/lesbian is fine, my friends and my ex bf don't hurt me and threaten me beca-
use I was bi. I was scared to tell my friends but they didn't judge when I did tell them.
Stand up for yourself, when someone bullies you for that, live your own, happy life and
well said
One of the first video games (If not the first) was programmed for a smaller version of the ACE.
