  • This Fall I purchased a new electric dethatcher after my last scarifier from SunJoe stopped working on me. The VonHaus electric dethatcher has been n my wish list for over a year now and after finally buying it I'm pretty happy with the purchase despite it's higher cost.

    These electric DIY machines are very good for the price and performance. I have had the Greenworks for years and happy with the investment. It doesn't have the scarifier attachment like the others though. I can buy cartridges for my Liberty 43 but are very expensive for the amount of times I would use them.

      You know I didn't say in the video but wish I had, the Greenworks dethatcher provided replacement springs for the dethatcher which are nice because a couple of mine have popped off over the years but the vonhaus didn't provide those replacements. That Greenworks machine is a really great buy for the price IMO.

    Exact same model under different branding can usually be found for $100-130. Hyper Tough has one for example.

      I'll definitely keep you all updated on it's durability over time. I'll be using it a lot for the next few months as I prepare all my new lawn spaces. I'd also like to pickup a battery unit for some of the project lawns that I hope to take on in 2023 and to compare performance side-by-side.

    I purchased the VonHaus after dealing with multiple failures of the SunJoe. I had three SunJoe Dethatcher/Scarifiers. All three, worked only ONCE then failed. The first one, SunJoe replaced under warranty. Second one only worked once again but SunJoe would not replace even though it was also under warranty. Third one I had to purchase, and again, you guessed it, worked once then failed. I will never understand all the glowing reviews of SunJoe on RUclips? Total Garbage. I have used my VonHaus twice now on a property of 10,000sq/ft. Its much more durable, handles better then the SunJoe and my hope is that it last far longer then the SunJoe.

    as far as I am aware they are not designed for use backwards. They do seem to pull up more but put a much larger load on the motor

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  4 месяца назад

      Cool to hear you like yours too but yeah the bags on all of these things are frustratingly small, that's why so many people tend to not even use them at all.

  • @americantroy77
    @americantroy77 Год назад

    I first purchased the Greenworks then I purchased the Sunjoe due to all the RUclips hype but ended up selling the Sunjoe after one use and returned to my Greenworks. The Sunjoe felt so flimsy compared to the Greenworks. I might try this one just for better bagging.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Год назад

      if you try it let everyone know your thoughts. I've come to the conclusion that bagging as you go is the way to do it because leaving all the gunk on the ground to rake it up later is harder. A lot of it gets ground back into the ground when you walk on it especially if it's damp. The sunjoe durability was really disappointing to me so unless you need something more aggressive enjoy your greenworks machine, it's a workhorse.

    I have a Greenworks that looks EXACTLY like this 1. It has dethatch & Scarifier as well. The appear completely identical. I'm sure different electronical guts.
    That and mine's green. I can't wait for you to seed TTTF. BTW, the alfalfa meal for grass seeding WAS GREAT ADVICE!
    Keep up the great content B.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Год назад +1

      I'll have to make sure to look that greenworks unit up to compare what I can online in the mean time I think my two options plus maybe a battery powered option for comparison sake will be a great set to use for my projects and videos. I honestly try to use more equipment than normal people own just for variety sake and to stay more educated on small differences that are hard to notice. I'm super tempted to start seeding the TTTF soon in the back yard but I'm going to be patient and wait. I don't have the time now to properly setup a gutter system, french drain, regrade, and change sprinkler line orientation back there. It's Christmas season, I'll start doing that work substantially after New Year probably when kids go back to school. and fwiw, I'll try to never seed without alfalfa meal again. It's dynamite.

    People must be buying them- VonHaus was available yesterday, but not today..so you can't buy it. The Greenworks was available for the pre-predatory inflation price of $90, but went back to $130-$140. Still glad I picked up the super high quality Brinley tow-behind for $90, which is now $160. Though I'm reluctant to drive my 400 pound lawn tractor on my front lawn.

  • @velcroman11

    I believe any of these machines called dethatchers are power rakes. They mechanically rake debris from the lawn in the same way a hand “dethatching rake”. They just remove debris from a lawn. Debris is the greatest on lawns where grass cuttings are left oh the lawn. IN MOST CASES a genuine dethatcher would remove the lawn. If you want to actually “dethatch” your lawn use a liquid dethatching chemical. If you want to keep thatch low, bag up the grass clippings, put them into a compost bin. The power rake in most cases will remove only the debris sitting a top the thatch.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Год назад

      Sounds like a perfect summary of the followup video I linked to at the end of this one...the biggest problem with electric dethatchers is...they don't actually remove thatch! :D I like the way you think and agree with this comment. I'd say chemical isn't the term I'd use for liquid dethatching but I agree with the concept.

      @@TurfMechanic It's more good content in a bite-sized piece. I like the slightly deeper bite of the blades. I tried a SunJoe on my boulevard strip last year and it just kissed the top of the crowns rather than chewing them up. I proceeded with poor results and need to regroup.

    What gauge power cable did you use on the Sunjoe? I'm wondering if that's why the motor died unexpectedly??

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Год назад +1

      Good point, I usually use 12 guage cords, but there's always a chance I accidentally used a light duty cord at some point on accident. As you go further from the outlet that can be worse. I didn't notice a problem at all though during my hill yard reno project in July and August. I only noticed it in Sept after my late August job that I did close to the house. Maybe I used the wrong cord, not sure.

    • @LilShay27
      @LilShay27 Год назад

      @@TurfMechanic I didn't know that was a thing until I bought mine. I remember the instructions were specific to 14 gauge up to 25 ft, 16 for longer. Something like that. My SJ cultivator said same thing.
      I guess it also depends on the motor's requirement as they can vary among model and brand.
