  • @boomerguy9935

    OK - just one more comment. No matter how many times I watch this, I can't keep my eyes off his left foot. This guy is so much more musical and controlled than Buddy Rich ever was. Buddy Rich was like artillery with machine guns and cannons. Joe was always pure music. I would like to be 10% as good as he was. He set the standard. He didn't need the extra drums or cymbals - heck, he didn't even need sticks!!!!

    • @rwl7532

      Machine guns are not, to me, musically appealing.

    I have heard them all and for my money Morello is THE one. I can't think of a more *tasteful* drummer. Morello had chops, incredible instincts, and a natural ability to meld his traps with whatever melodic scenario he found himself in. He was a percussive genius.
    btw, this is not to diminish any other drummer. For me, Morello is the one.

    • @allrequiredfields
      @allrequiredfields 5 лет назад +13

      What I love about Joe was that, despite having all the chops, he was *never* trying to impress you with them; he was *always* trying to think of something cool; something *musical* to play.
      Don't get me wrong, I still love seeing Rich do crazy stuff, but with Morello, you always felt like he was trying to entertain you, rather than impress you.

      Morello had poor sight from birth and in his later years became blind. When this happened he continued to work and teach until his death.

    I think his best solo was Castilian Drums on The Davie Brubeck Quartet Live At Carnegie Hall. My all time favorite solo of any drummer. It was a masterpiece. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe in 1965 in San Francisco. My drum teacher studied from Joe and took me to see and meet him. Not only a great drummer but true gentleman as well. I was in 7th heaven that night. Thank you for your great contribution to the drum world.

      Finesse. I had the album when it first came out and I played it for my non musician friend back then. Twenty some years later he treated me to a Brubeck concert in Santa Cruz. The original quartet was no longer playing together but the guys he had with him that night were excellent. A very good time was had.

      @@buddyrichable1 I don't know who was playing with him. We were up in the nosebleed seats. We could hear pretty well but a few more feet up and we could have heard birds walking on the roof. I don't recall even having a program. The place was pretty full. The internet says the capacity is 2015 people. The main floor was filled and most of the tiered seats. Yes, it was very enjoyable and memorable. A lot of famous and extraordinary musicians have played in Santa Cruz. I think I even played there once . . . at the elks club. But most of my gigs were in the Monterey area and once even as far south as Greenfield.😳

    I saw Joe Morello play in the Brubeck Quartet UK farewell concert at the Royal Festival Hall in the early 60's. I have remained a great admirer of his skill and musicality ever since, and was thrilled to receive a warm and friendly response to an email I sent him shortly before he died. A truly great drummer, and lovely guy. RIP Joe.

I think the three greatest drum solos are Buddy Rich's "West Side Story", Louis Bellson's "Skin Deep", and Joe Morello's "Sounds of the Loop". I had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Rich and Bellson, but I never had the chance to meet Joe.
