- Only flaw with this is the exceedingly frustrating camerawork that focuses on Joe’s face or hi-hat foot at the worst times🤬
Dave Brubeck-piano. Paul Desmond-alto. Eugene Wright-Bass. Joe Morello-drums

I'm a simple man. I saw a Joe Morello video, I clicked like.
Love his tasteful, musical drumming.
Morello Melts my Face with every solo. Incredible phrasing, dynamics, tension & release, musicality and Fierce technique. One of the Greatest of All Time!
Bill Ward, John Bonham, Ian Paice, Carmin Apppice and even Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden all thought this guy was the nutz!
Has the best stick control of any drummer. !!
His solos were pieces of music first. Incredible chops were just extra. Insane talent. And, he was legally blind.
He was already a master violinist as a teenager but his instructor told him he would not be able to see the conductors wand from the pit and he should choose a different instrument. He turned lemons into lemonade. His blindness brought out his strength. My favorite drummer.
He was a lot of fun to be around too.
@@UPdan The videos I've seen of him giving seminars and speaking to the audience shows that he was indeed a very modest and friendly person. My favorite comment by him was to a student who wanted to play like him and he said, "Why? There's already one of me in the world. Why would you want another one?"
He always encouraged his students to be their personal best in their own styles.
I've never heard of him disrespecting another drummer.
Hard to find a more musical solo. And...he was FLYING at the end...as great as any drummer.
❤
Instead of blowing you away, Joe pulls you in. What a wonderful and musical solo. I've admired Joe since the 60's and he has always been my favorite drummer.
Such a light touch and so much power at the same time.
Atom in hands
Joe was and maybe will be remembered as the best.
Me: Oh, cool. I can't wait to see Morello's sticking patterns.
Cameraman: Here, let me show you his left foot.
Yeah, it’s REALLY annoying
Would’ve thought it was filmed by Quentin Tarantino
Hey, don't be so negative. They got his right ear, too.
Yea really stupid... “ your fired”!.
@@thecrippledrummer
Also frustrating and annoying...
No date given in "66
People have their favourites but even buddy in my opinion couldn’t do what joe could.
Musical, fast and his accents are off the charts.. great left hand for traditional grip.
Fact!
What few know is, Joe was a featured soloist with the Boston Philharmonic at the age of 9, on violin! He appeared several times with them as a violinist, he was 15 when he decided to dedicate his efforts to the drums, Thank You Joe!
Morello's left hand is faster than a speeding bullet, he can jump over other drummers in a single bound, doesn't need Lois Lane or Perry White. Will never forget the Quartet's performance at NTSU in the Fall of 1962....we had read in "Downbeat", or heard about Brubeck's drummer, and how the other band members just left the stage whilst Joe annihilated an audience.. well, he did and I'm still knackered.
There's a video where he played solo, he was yelling at Brubeck and/or Wright before they left the stage and he killed it!
I’d have every student watch this to learn musical melodic rhythms. Every phrase is interesting from the softest to the loudest, great contrasts, texture, cymbal technique, some Stick Control patterns too. Truly one of Joe°s best solos.
Too bad we didn't see any of it.
I love watching his solos that much more because all you ever hear people say about Joe, aside from being a great drummer, was that he was a kind and humble man who devoted decades to teaching others.
I saw Joe perform a similar sole in 1964 in Brookings, SD at SD State U. He did a fantastic 1/2 hour drum solo with his left hand single stick roll! The best I’d ever seen then and to this day! I’ve been a drummer since the 60’s & 70’s thru college! Joe has always been my IDOL! Thanks for putting this on the Internet in 2024 for others see now! He will be remembered as the GREATEST of all Time!!
My Jesus Christ,that stick control🔥
Loose wrists, great energy management.
Magnificent!!!!
Pure raw talent!!
Joe has such incredible technique. His Ludwig
Sound unbelievable!
He is sooooooo good
The bass drum is the heartbeat and Joe makes you feel it deep within you. Everything else is always good vibrations. 😸👉🏼🥁
Tbh I actually think this is my favourite Joe Morello drum solo
This one is new to me too. Has to be my favorite Morello video performance. FABULOUS! Thanks Drumuitar!
I always loved the way Joe tuned his drums also. They had that beautiful Ludwig Mahogany/poplar/mahogany sound and they were wide open/ no muting.. Sounded Great.. Although they were probably maple/poplar/maple
The look Morello gives Gene Wright at 5;00 is priceless. "Hey,man, this isn't a bass solo". :)
Love the way those old kits sounded.
Thinner shells made a huge difference.
First time I've seen this. Joe's conversations on his drum solos are always soo interesting & melodic. He's smooth as butter.
🍞🧈🥁
The fact he was this amazing and legally blind... even with 20/20 vision he would just be the best... it calms the mind only to melt it then to bring it back again.. I litreally could just sit back and listen to Joe Morello on drums and Paul Desmond on alto sax for like 15 albums in a row.. no other sounds... im a perfect world bing is on vocals with them but thats just my dream..
If he had 20/20 vision, he would have been a classic violinist. When he was very young, Joe's maestro told him that he would not be able to see the conductor's wand from the pit. Joe switched to drums. Lemons to lemonade. 😊
Beyond any doubt....the fastest left hand in the business!!
Mr Morellos work on the ride cymbal just drives everything. I wish I could work with drummers who play like that...... subtle.
He was always been my favorite drummer, and there was no need for this video which actually confirm It !
OH-MY-GOSH!!
I must meditate about this a little, before I watch it. It is wonderful and rare. Thank you!

Por siempre Joe ! MAESTRO entre maestros !!!
Only Joe Morello could have pulled that off.... Only Joe!
I love Buddy but Morello is the most musical drummer ever.
BTW.... Bonham's biggest influence was Morello.
En su tiempo sí.
Makes sense as he often quoted jazz drummers in his playing.
Oh, Joe!
A drum solo for 8 minutes and 30 seconds. DAMN!!!
Beautiful playing. Thank you.
That is Perfection,i never saw someone with that left hand.
Buddy Rich.
@@HankFinkle11 I read somewhere that Buddy sharpened his up after watching Joe. They were friends, and both absolute monster players.
perfection is difficult to improve....thats joe morello....
I'm so in love
there are legends and there are God's, Joe was a God
Magnificent ~ thanks !!!
Beautiful!!
Mr Morello never loose the Rhythmen, fantastic.❤
don`t lose your loose change
So there are 5 people that don't enjoy excellent music.
It's funny, as I really want to sit down behind a kit again and play my ass off after watching Joe Morello play. I wish I had appreciated him more when I was in my teens and taking lessons, as my drum teacher was a student of his.
Joe was the first, the unique, the best.He was all music. Thanks,God for bring him us.
WONDERFUL
My favorite drummer, ever!
Thanfully the camerawork focuses more than usual on Eugene Wright.
Easily one of the best - at or near the very top - - incredible technique and musicality
That dude is not drumming… He’s singing.
gran baterista tecnica perfecta muy limpio el sonido muy bien trabajado ese solo impecable
Thanks Joe. You convinced me. I think I will take the premium platinum insurance package. Death and dismemberment included? Yes please.
Another Ludwig master....could not understand why he switched to DW. In later life.
These sounded brilliant.
Just using a 4 piece kit...not 14, like some modern day drummers.
The camera man’s facial shots of Joe’s, were a pain....he should have concentrated more on his playing.
george nolte
What year was that ?
george nolte
I wonder what changed about the drums and who was it sold to.
george nolte Terry Bissette was a major part of turning Ludwig around. He recently left and returned to retail.
george nolte I’ve heard the EXACT same thing from a few friends that studied with Joe. I never had the chance to meet him but he called me after I had written him, must’ve been around ‘94 or so. I was so shocked that I was talking to him that I can barely remember what he said.
Wayne Smith
Definitely the best , for us Baby Boomers..😊
Man, Joe Morello and Eugene "The Senator" Wright on bass are a fantastic Rhythm Section.. really great track... Dave Brubeck does his usual discordant piano thing, cool, but no sign of Paul Desmond... Anyway, it's all about Joe and Gene.. ❤
Mr Camerman, as much as I love Joe’s beautiful face and left foot, I would like to see his sticking patterns just a little bit more.
Blues for joe
Ahhh. Yes!
Brilliant stick work from 7:45 thru 9:15 and the camera man is showing Joe's foot on the high hat during his snare, tom floor tom and bass drum work... What an idiot camera man.. I would have fired him before the show was over. I hate when Non-Musicians don't film solos of any kind of instrument.
Yikes, that was way cool and the kit sounds killer you can clearly hear that Bonham copped licks from this guy
Can’t understand why the director kept cutting to JM’s hi hat work. Once, OK, but c’mon, let’s see the Master play!
I have a hunch that the camera guy knew little about drumming and pointed it where he thought the action was coming from. Lol
@@thecrippledrummer Blame the director, not the camera operator. He only shoots what he's told. The director makes the calls on what goes out over the air -- which shots and for how long they stay with a given shot. Seems like you can always tell if the director tries too hard to be "creative" instead of working with the melody -- like using a long shot during a solo, instead of something tight on the hands. Seems like that could be worked out at rehearsal.
Most of the time he caught Joe's right ear, or a straight on shot of his face. They do the same thing with dancers, even step dancers: they show their shoulders and faces when they're doing the most difficult and beautiful steps and it drives me nuts. Too bad we don't have a video of Joe's performance. Lost forever, we'll just have to listen, but it would have been nice to have seen it, too.
Supraphonic ?
Today’s Ludwigs sound great as well.
Was Joe using Mahogany or maple.
CHrome over brass.
@@thecrippledrummer
I meant the rest of the kit…not the snare..
what's his sticking on the snare drum from 0:49 - 0:50?
A cross between Rich’s precision and Roach’s musicality? Just asking.
Had folks not been so bamboozled by Rich's snappy snare and infinite cockiness, he'd never have been considered the best by so many.
Buddy Rich was never the MJ or LBJ. He was the Wilt Chamberlain or the Shaq. Among the top half dozen or so, was often the top dog for many years, but never ~the~ all-time drummer.
/that racist jagoff Ginger Baker was better than Buddy Rich, all things considered
@@EconAtheist Ginger Baker was and still is the most overrated drummer who ever lived.
@@EconAtheist
Ginger Baker was ok but not in same league as Buddy, Morello, Cobham, Bruford, Bonham, Gordon, Porcaro(Jeff and Papa Joe), Purdie, Seraphine, Gottlieb, Ringo, Collins, S.Smith, Erskine...........
@@EconAtheist that is utter nonsense.
You have to look he needs to hear the bass. A drummer and the bassist need to be one and the same
All the stuff joe was doing with his hands and the camera man zoom in to his foot on the high hat.. dumb and weird!.
I see where John Bonham must have got it from.
Superb , i was a big fan of Paul Motian too Bill Evans drummer , very tasteful 😊
