This is one of the most underrated videos Randy has point out. Catches picky bass like crazy. I was literally throwing the same bait in the same spot and thought of this video and walah I caught all three bass the last trip doing This mod. Thanks randy!
Yup good stuff Randy.👍🏻. One other thing that I do with the flappers. Get a bic pen. Use pliers and pull the pen part of it out. Now you have a plastic hole puncher. Take one flapper at a time and lay it flat down on a hard surface and use the hole puncher to make three small holes on the flappers. Punch and twist it a few times for each hole to remove the plastic. Keep a little distance between each hole. Repeat same thing on the other flapper. Then when done doing that. Take a pair of scissors and cut right down the center of the flapper and you will have a more livelier and realistic craw looking bait than a brush hog with just flat nothing flappers on it. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey Randy I was going through some videos I had saved in my library of yours and I was wondering on this jig here do you or would you use flash/tinsel in late winter early spring
Hay Randy! Long time buddy. 1997 Lake Furguson Greenville Ms FLW Championship. I put you on the Oxbow that you ran to and that little 9 inch deep creek....
I've been a Zoom Baits fan since the 80's when I started bass fishing. I saw a guy win a BassMaster tournament with a Carolina Rigged Zoom Centipede. I was sold ! Been fishing them ever since. Awesome vid, Brother. Thank you.
Great for jig combo when fishing for quality instead of quanity. Fishing alone on a Texas Right or a Carolina Rig .........the Zoom 8 inch Lizard will beat the Hog 3 to one . That's my secret and you want get another one from this ole bass fisherman. I like the tip of roughing up the bait , notice the look of plastic when you have had a couple hits and or landed a bass , you notice the abrasive look and texture .........notice that the hits on it seems to double and notice ( not all the time ) the hits lesson when you take off one that won't stay up on the hook. Get that plastic back up on the hook shank and do the old toothpick trick , pushing the pick thru the plastic and Right thru the eye of hook and out the other side of the plastic ( lizzard head ) with a slight twist and little pressure , take your finger nail clippers and clip the tooth pic on both sides buy pushing so slightly against the plastic so that the toothpick is slightly inside the plastic. Simi transparent plastic is super easy starting out with this trick because you can see the eye , darker plastic will become easy as you do a few and if you do a few you can trust me when I say,,,it will become a routine for most of you. Many cutters will cut the toothpicks but NOTHING will cleanly and crisply cut them like NAIL CLIPPERS . Round wooden toothpicks and nail clippers not only saves you money on high dollar plastic , it'll land you more Bass more times than not. Oh yeah, after sniping that end off the toothpick, save the other long half that's left because you will need it. When the plastic is finally riped away from the toothpick or to pieces and you remove it, you will have to remove the pick that is wedged in the eye , it might just be a good time to cut off and retie the hook. Don't forget to take a kid fishing, don't matter if you have kids or not ,take somebody's kid .
The brush hog is truly a versatile bait. Between the sizes and colors of it and all the ways you can fish it. It’s hard to beat. I like the baby brush hogs or the super hogs. Great on a Tokyo rig or weightless.
I completely agree with Howard, cut the appendages from the body at the front attachment point rather than the aft attachment point...then cut a small portion of it off thereby slightly shortening each leg. This will allow for much greater, lifelike action as you work the bait.
Caney Lake in North Central Louisiana is about 5 minutes from where I graduated high school, we used to skip school my senior year and go swimming in the deep pits before they closed the dam. They closed the gates on it the year I graduated in 1986, in the early 1990's it was the destination for big bass, it was stocked heavily with Florida's, the state record used to change almost monthly, it still holds the state record at almost 16 lbs and holds 6 of the top 10 in the state. I remember when the brushhog came out. There was so much fishing pressure on the lake, my fishing partner and I used to joke that the brushhogs were schooling lol! I still live close by, about 10 minutes from the lake. I still love the brushhog, I love flipping a green pumpkin orange flake with the tails dyed orange in the bushes on Toledo Bend. It has definitely stood the test of time!
Brush hog about the end of February and beginning of March around here get hard to get because everyone buy's them up, glad you reminded me early now I can go buy up the good color's and be that guy😆
Do you think you could do a video on team tournaments and strategies/tips for 2 people fishing together and how they can compliment each other's lures to catch more fish?
I Cut the flappers completely off for short strikes on high pressure days using it on a C-rig. I've seen it make a big difference many times. Also no flappers is killer on a drop shot.
Nice tips! I like to cut the legs at the top where they connect rather than at the bottom where they connect for even more leg flapping as they stick out away from the body. Keep up those secret tips Randy!
This is the first time I've seen Randy B. In any kind of media format in about 20 years. I didn't know what ever happened to him. It took me a couple of minutes to realize it was him. I'll never forget the program where he took a 40 thousand dollar bass boat and demonstrated how to jump over a 3 foot diameter log blocking his path in a river.
Thanks!! Useful tips to get an understanding about how you can make any bait more "attractive"thing to demonstrate with. And that's a great bait to teach on, it's got a little of everything to demonstrate all the little unique touches that can be used to modify all kinds of baits.
i as always assumed you were suppose to break the appendage free to increase action .not sure if im gonna cut thd head off my lizards though . i becer used tail dye markers.i k ow alit of company now are co m.j ing with chartreuse tails of that option anyway on robo and zoom brands
I'll definitely be giving the mid size one a try this year, All I've been using for a long time is the baby brushhog. I use em for flipping/pitching, carolina rig and tokyo rig. For flipping and pitching I'm thinking that the mid size one will hold a hook a lot better.
Randy I thought you were going to do my secret mod. I like to cut those big flappers off. It gives those twin tales way more action.it then resembles the old twin tail lizards that they no longer make.try it you will❤️ it.thanks for the tips.
I just wanted to take the time to let you know you are right, my tools did go stale. I've been fishing Table Rock for 20 years tournaments every weekend and I turned off all sonar and forward facing sonar from 6:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. today and I could not catch a cold in New York City, could not even get a bite which is absolutely unreal to me. Im going to go out of my way to use the live scope as little as possible. Damnet man.
Randy, love the channel and all the information you share with the public. Your statement about tube baits is incorrect. Bobby Garland tournament pro from Washington Utah actually invented the Gitzit (the original tube bait) in 1964. I started bass fishing in the mid 80s and we were using Gitzits in Utah then. One of the most productive days I've ever had fishing was on a Gitzit in the 80s.
Sweet. I never thought about the breaking up the salt thing on the plastics. Certainly going to use that tip. Thanks for not being a bass hole and helping all of us. LoL
Great bait mod. Definitely going to try this out. Do you shorten the length when using as as a football jig trailer or just leave it at the original size? Thanks.
All the tips ive heard and never heard of the roughing up part, closest thing ive heard to that is with a senko if you rub the tail it gives it a chartreuse look without the dye. Cool tips
Jonny had explained his terminology in past videos so, here is the snippet. Offshore is a spot where you make a full cast and can't reach the bank. Shallow is relative. You could be 200 yards off the bank fishing a hump that 3ft below the surface. My personal opinion is offshore and bank fishing for clearer terminology.
Appreciate all the work you do in putting these outs and sharing some great information. Good luck this upcoming year and the impact you are having doing these instructions/tips.
Thanks for the tip Randy! Have you ever used this modification on a spinner bait, buzz bait or chatter bait? Especially during the pre-spawn around grass.
@@jacobturner9947 Pretty sure he lives in Missouri or someplace like that so I doubt they freeze since his lakes don't . Where I live pools never freeze but they do get really cold. Or better yet he could just have his partner over on fish the moment rent out that giant pool again.
Great video....I didnt know about roughing up the plastics but I've been cutting the appendages on those for years....that's a great Carolina rig bait at night at lake of the ozarks....
I’ve always separated the arms if I wanted more action but “feathering” the large flappers is a great tip 👍 Edit: I’ve only been bass fishing for a few years but Ive caught more fish on green pumpkin brush hog than any other bait.
Excellent tips.
Not to mention that rigging it up brings all those flavors out. Good video brother.
This is one of the most underrated videos Randy has point out. Catches picky bass like crazy. I was literally throwing the same bait in the same spot and thought of this video and walah I caught all three bass the last trip doing This mod. Thanks randy!

i been usin zoom lizards since late 80s and its the only 1 i use cause its got great colors

Hay Randy! Long time buddy. 1997 Lake Furguson Greenville Ms FLW Championship. I put you on the Oxbow that you ran to and that little 9 inch deep creek....
Do you ever fish the brush hog with a standup Jig head? If so please recommend the jig head and hook size.
You are giving up my ancient Chinese secrets. Dang you.
i do that too.its just ways man makes his lures have more appeal .some guyz paint there crankbaits
It will has more action separating the arms from the upper side. Check it out!
My absolute favorite soft plastic
Great trip on the brushhog . And thanks for sharing.
I actually cut the legs on the top side than on the bottom so there's more action
Loved that one
When would you fish this in North Texas?
Man thank you ..
I've been a Zoom Baits fan since the 80's when I started bass fishing. I saw a guy win a BassMaster tournament with a Carolina Rigged Zoom Centipede. I was sold ! Been fishing them ever since. Awesome vid, Brother. Thank you.
yeah man the centipede is bass crack .i kill with a wacky centipedes
I cut out the two wings with a razor to look just like crayfish claws big bass can't resist it !
I like to split the tails of my brush hogs down the middle up into the body of the bait .

Since watching your videos, I have been roughing up my soft plastics. And it definitely makes a huge difference.
We stuck twin tails inside tubes and texas rigged em in the early 90s
The brush hog is truly a versatile bait. Between the sizes and colors of it and all the ways you can fish it. It’s hard to beat. I like the baby brush hogs or the super hogs. Great on a Tokyo rig or weightless.
What are you fishing this year
Hey Randy! Caught by PB today using a trick you showed in another video. Just wanted to shoot you a thanks and that I appreciate these videos! ☯️
Hi Randy great tip I love the brush hog great bait Thanks Randy and stay safe ....

Who remembers the Gitzit? I remember my grandfather bringing them back to TX from the US BASS open on Mead in the 80s.
Thanks Randy! Appreciate you letting us in on the goods!

I will be trying to rough them up from now on... very interesting tip
Cutting the brush hog makes it more "realistic". So, it makes the brush hog which isn't real look more like a real brush hog. Got it.
Ive done something like that but not so extensive great tip THANKS again Randy !!
Can also cut "claws" into the rear flaps depending on how you wanna fish it.. Extremely versatile bait
Been Fishing for 30 yrs and never seen this, thanks Randy
Great tips, thanks.
Great tip 👍 Is there any time when I shouldn't use this modification?
Brush hog about the end of February and beginning of March around here get hard to get because everyone buy's them up, glad you reminded me early now I can go buy up the good color's and be that guy😆
Awesome tip I use a lot of brush hogs 👍
Do you think you could do a video on team tournaments and strategies/tips for 2 people fishing together and how they can compliment each other's lures to catch more fish?
Great idea I can do that tomorrow!
Because I love brush hogs especially in the spring

Thanks for taking the time to make these instructional videos, and providing more options to use to help increase the strike ratio. I'm very grateful.
What's up with the Skeeter hat?
Why would you say a Speed Craw is most versatile and contradict it with this?
brush hog and those ring worm things are my go to carolina rig baits
Do you rough up your soft plastic swim baits also?
Thankful to hear any tips from a true pro!
The brush hog is the best creature bait in my opinion.
Thanks for the tip Randy!🎩
i as always assumed you were suppose to break the appendage free to increase action .not sure if im gonna cut thd head off my lizards though . i becer used tail dye markers.i k ow alit of company now are co m.j ing with chartreuse tails of that option anyway on robo and zoom brands
I heard the midsize brush hog is the best size to use? What are your thoughts?
I'll definitely be giving the mid size one a try this year, All I've been using for a long time is the baby brushhog. I use em for flipping/pitching, carolina rig and tokyo rig. For flipping and pitching I'm thinking that the mid size one will hold a hook a lot better.
Probably depends on the forage size in your lake.
Brushhog on a Carolina rig is a must in midTN.
Do you do the same with a baby brush hawg and do you dip the tails? Love your channel
Randy I thought you were going to do my secret mod. I like to cut those big flappers off. It gives those twin tales way more action.it then resembles the old twin tail lizards that they no longer make.try it you will❤️ it.thanks for the tips.

arnt you worried to leave your scent on the bait??? do you spray em down after
Sweet. I never thought about the breaking up the salt thing on the plastics. Certainly going to use that tip. Thanks for not being a bass hole and helping all of us. LoL
Thank you for the information sir!
Great bait mod. Definitely going to try this out. Do you shorten the length when using as as a football jig trailer or just leave it at the original size? Thanks.
Near the beginning, he says he cuts it at the mid point, for a jig trailer!
Thanks. I missed that.

Cutting those small arms seems so obvious now. Thanks Randy!
As always Randy....very informative and helpful. Thank you again for all you do!! 👍
Will Clarkshill lake in GA become a regular lake breakdown anytime soon? Thanks.
I use a baby brushhog on a shakey head but cut the front legs at front .
wow!! I have fished brush hogs for a long time' never thought about doing that? Awesome tip!!! will be doing that for now on!!! Thank you very much!!!
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks, that was some good stuff!
All the tips ive heard and never heard of the roughing up part, closest thing ive heard to that is with a senko if you rub the tail it gives it a chartreuse look without the dye. Cool tips

The baby brush hog works good on a 1/4oz shaky head too. I’ve just been using it as it comes though, I’ll have to try these mods on it
Awesome tip. Makes so much sense. I’ll definitely try it
You said that "Tubes weren't even invented yet in the 90's". What?
FYI, Tubes were Invented in the mid 70's by Bobby Garland. He called it a "Gitzet".
Thanks for the tip Randy! Have you ever used this modification on a spinner bait, buzz bait or chatter bait? Especially during the pre-spawn around grass.
My favorite Carolina Rig bait. I will try this tip. As always, thanks.
You need to get a fish tank so we can see some underwater footage. Really enjoying these modification videos!
Pool is better. Just need a friend with one.
@@jacobturner9947 Pretty sure he lives in Missouri or someplace like that so I doubt they freeze since his lakes don't . Where I live pools never freeze but they do get really cold. Or better yet he could just have his partner over on fish the moment rent out that giant pool again.
Tricks of the trade. Master
Nice but crap! I've got all my soft plastics already coated in "attractant!"
Thanks for the great tip. I love the brush hog. My main problem was the tail flaps were too stiff.
Would like to see you fish !!! Thanks , great video
Thanks alot for this great tip!!
Great video....I didnt know about roughing up the plastics but I've been cutting the appendages on those for years....that's a great Carolina rig bait at night at lake of the ozarks....
Your channel is awesome Randy!! Love all these tips especially coming from a local guy 😃
Randy, do you modify the Baby Brush Hog in the same way?
Great mod Randy. I'm trying one of those in the pool today.
Thanks you for the “Tip!”
great minds think alike!! i have been doing these exact mods for a couple years now.... guess the secret is out now lol
How do you rig it
Great tip Randy the brushog is my go to I will definitely give it a try
Nice.
I’ve always separated the arms if I wanted more action but “feathering” the large flappers is a great tip 👍
Edit: I’ve only been bass fishing for a few years but Ive caught more fish on green pumpkin brush hog than any other bait.
