  • The sound of a wild Sambar Deer making alarm calls in Thailand. Sambar Deer (Rusa unicolor) make a range of sounds, the most commonly heard call is their loud barking alarm call when they sense danger. These calls vary from a deep booming ‘pook’ sound to higher-pitched variations. Alarm barks are often accompanied by foot stamping.
The Sambar (Rusa unicolor) is one of the world’s largest deer species and is found throughout south-east Asia & the Indian subcontinent. They have also been introduced to parts of south-eastern Australia.
The audio in this video was recorded in Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in western Thailand and features a high-pitched call often made by Sambar Deer in this region.
