@@Aes_Saru oh really? You don't say... what has that to do with my comment? The OP is mocking Jocko, my only counter-point was that physical hardship can go hand in hand with building a more stress tolerant brain, someone who is physically fit learns far better than someone who is out of shape

The right: TAKE OWNERSHIP OF EVERYTHING The workers *seize the means of production and dismantle the system that blocks their way to happiness* The right: You weren't supposed to do that
Does this dude realize that people who have anorexia nervosa (a form of which overlaps with exercise bulimia) have taken the exact kind of path he recommends, only in a different form? Discipline, in not eating anything even as their bodies are eating themselves. Staying humble, by way of denying themselves nice things because they "know" they don't deserve it (one exact quote of one anorexic person's inner voice being "bitches don't get nice things") Taking extreme ownership of the problem of the threat of fatness, by taking extreme measures to ensure not even a single molecule of "bad" food passes their lips Making no excuses, instead ensuring that they berate themselves for eating a single extra bite or any bite of "enemy" food or missing even one day of working out even if they have a torn muscle or the weather is bad. Casting no blame, except on themselves for being such a disgusting fattie (even as they are severely underweight), and swiftly dealing themselves punishment in the form of denying more food from themselves and doing extra workouts if one extra calorie passes their lips Hard work, in the form of frenetic exercise to burn even more calories Not even really thinking about the world not being fair or anything like that or anything related to the system (except where the system tries to "trip them up" on their "disciplined" path by forcing them to eat food and even possibly sending them to the hospital to get treatment) so anything about complaints is more or less irrelevant. And finally, assuming they don't get treatment, death by starvation, as their bodies cannot keep them alive on the few calories they have ingested. He has no idea of the kinds of dark ends discipline can get you to if it isn't shaped and balanced with times to let go. He takes for granted that SEAL candidates are allowed to whine to their squadmates about how they should perform better, a luxury denied in certain programs disabled kids are forced to attend. And he doesn't consider that as hard as Navy SEAL training is, at least he didn't have to maintain a smiley or Zen demeanor the whole time he did it, nor is he punished for having a grunt or tense or other such reaction for showing pain - a sad reality at the Judge Rotenberg center where kids are punished with literal electric shocks and then can be punished again for "tensing up" during the shocks - and the equivalent among the SEALS would be if the dude got punished in BUD/S because a single arm wobbled once during one of the many pushups or burpees required during the training, or a leg wobbled once during the many conditioning runs. That doesn't happen because of course the army knows it's humanly impossible to require tough training and ALSO to require a perfectly zen demeanor and a show of perfect ease at the same time. And spies, whose requirements are the closest to what many of these disabled children are put through, are very likely to be hospitalized with exhaustion for pretending to be someone they're not (implying that this takes a far greater mental toll than the type of tough exercise you see in BUD/S). But often disabled kids are put through these types of requirements that could strain and madden anyone, especially at the degree they are enforced, putting aside the fact that these disabilities by definition make it harder to meet these demands. Oh, and speaking of disabilities, when soldiers, like him, acquire disabilities, THEIR army-trained discipline starts to lead them down a dark path, as they continue to push their now-disabled bodies to perform like an able-bodied person, causing them to be constantly exhausted because they have no idea how to adjust for a new set of limitations. When someone is taught such seriously maladaptive lessons, sometimes blaming the system is necessary in order for someone to even RECOGNIZE that the lessons they were taught are actively impeding them from making any decent progress in their lives- partly because blaming the system can be a way to prevent the blame from falling on oneself and thus preventing the person from falling into a quagmire of guilt where they beat themselves up constantly and are unable to do anything because their inner voices shout at them no matter what. It can also help them deal more healthily if they burn out - and yes, Navy SEAL dude may not have had to deal with burnout because he is unusually adapted to such, but that is a real thing that happens to most people. And he cannot recognize that he is in no way representative of the ordinary person, and that his resistance to burnout is rare.
"He's glaring even in the fucking drawing they made of him." I'm actually wheezing from this. This is gold. Edit: Its even more hilarious considering that somebody actually did the character and thought "But it doesn't look like him". Then they slap the "Mean Look" on his face and its suddenly perfect.
As a fan of the guy you’re roasting I’m trying not to be offended by the fact you know nothing about him but your roasts are hilarious my dude. I wouldn’t say he juices but he is old enough to be prescribed by doctors testosterone replacement therapy and he does do jujitsu religiously
I agree with Jocko and also Vaush here. Great things can only be achieved with discipline. However, right-leaning authority figures will mutate this into "DO NOT QUESTION THE SYSTEM (that makes me rich and keeps you poor) EVER."
As we all know, slaves won their freedom by humbly and diligently doing the work their masters forced on them, and not at all trying to change the system. -jocko the caveman, probably.
For the military discipline breaking down the ego effectively bit, I'm slightly skeptical. Some of the most obnoxiously arrogant people I've ever met were military or ex-military. I think bloated ego more likely is from learned toxicity, low empathy, or they're frustrated with their own low self-esteem than not having more discipline. I'm aware this is just my personal opinion tho
Dude, I was disappointed to see Jocko on PragerU, but overall he has a good message. He preaches hard work, perseverance, leadership, and lack of ego. In my opinion these messages are apolitical and really valuable. I used to listen to his podcast a lot and it really helped get me out of a rut. He was clearly a right-winger, but that never factored into his podcasts too much (with the exception of pro police/military views, that was very prevalent). It was mostly interviews and discussion of literature related to his values, which I found super helpful. Idk. Feels like there's a reason most the rips are on the aesthetic -- and to Vaush's credit he acknowledges there really isn't anything objectionable here. I'm pretty conflicted about this video because I unironically like Jocko (or at least his message) and his video wasn't pushing right wing propaganda like most PragerU vids. That said, I still take issue with the fact he appeared on the platform. I'm probably just biased here since he helped me improved, but nothing about his content suggested to me he was using the message of extreme discipline to justify systematic failures/injustices. That may be Prager's aim, but it wasn't Jocko's -- at least when I listened. Might just be my bias speaking, but kinda felt like Vaush wanted the vid to be more ridiculous that in was, and it really showed. Whatever, though. I love me some Jocko and I love me some Vaush. They come from very different worlds and lived experiences but I think both have valuable things to say, and I'm down with that.
@shemi shami I wouldn't think of implicit interpretations as valid every time somebody says particular boomer thing. I would say that work sets you free because it gives you money to purchase what you want, it's a very shortcut and dumbass but far from justifying statism, fascism or nazism (or the system as a whole, to accept and not try to improve). I'm from a country that was f*d up hard by both nazi and commies so I couldn't be sane and support their ideas.
Imho it's something fair to say, when you can change things then go for it, when you really cannot then just try to overcome the obstacle or accept it. It's a matter of consideration whether some issue is possible to get changed or not in our states, but just sitting and complaining is the least productive and/or entertaining approach that could've been taken.
@shemi shami I might have missed it indeed, watched the vid quite a while ago. I would like you to elaborate a bit more on this, I was closer to assume you put an equal sign between anyone that uses such phrase and Auschwitz ;) Now I assume you suggest that it's a wildcard phrase. But tbh it actually falls into Jocko's mindset more than to what was happening in Auschwitz, it was unrelated there af indeed.
One thing that I never understand about the "motivation/discipline" dichotomy, is that you need the motivation to adhere to your discipline. At some point, you need to have motivation, and you can't just discipline your way out of it.
This was one of the first videos that came out after I found the channel and I just remember not being able to play the game I was watching in the background cause I was fucking cry laughing

i am good at physical activity so its easier to do physical activity then mental activity, but i took the hard road when i did the thing i find easy (physical activity).
if the guy was like yea i struggled with math but instead of taking the easy road and doing something im good at (physical activity), i buckled down and learnt the math. that's taking the hard road.
You realise that he's not a dumbass though right? Generally speaking, you can't be a moron and make it into a SEAL team. Also, don't underestimate how important physical activity is for mental function, especially if you want to function in high stress environments, like, the real world
schr4nz going on prageru instantly disproved you, I’m sorry Jockostan.

Does this dude realize that people who have anorexia nervosa (a form of which overlaps with exercise bulimia) have taken the exact kind of path he recommends, only in a different form?
Discipline, in not eating anything even as their bodies are eating themselves.
Staying humble, by way of denying themselves nice things because they "know" they don't deserve it (one exact quote of one anorexic person's inner voice being "bitches don't get nice things")
Taking extreme ownership of the problem of the threat of fatness, by taking extreme measures to ensure not even a single molecule of "bad" food passes their lips
Making no excuses, instead ensuring that they berate themselves for eating a single extra bite or any bite of "enemy" food or missing even one day of working out even if they have a torn muscle or the weather is bad.
Casting no blame, except on themselves for being such a disgusting fattie (even as they are severely underweight), and swiftly dealing themselves punishment in the form of denying more food from themselves and doing extra workouts if one extra calorie passes their lips
Hard work, in the form of frenetic exercise to burn even more calories
Not even really thinking about the world not being fair or anything like that or anything related to the system (except where the system tries to "trip them up" on their "disciplined" path by forcing them to eat food and even possibly sending them to the hospital to get treatment) so anything about complaints is more or less irrelevant.
"He's glaring even in the fucking drawing they made of him."
I'm actually wheezing from this. This is gold.

Its even more hilarious considering that somebody actually did the character and thought "But it doesn't look like him".

This is still the most blessed video on the entire internet
Discipline is freedom is essentially just a rephrasing of "work sets you free".
Discipline has not only be kept regarding work but also other life activities. Even hobbies.
@shemi shami and it is wrong just because some bad people used this phrase in a bad way? I'm asking because I once saw this approach.
"Taking ownership of everything?" Sounds like a micromanager to me.
He's the opposite actually... He advocates for autonomy
One thing that I never understand about the "motivation/discipline" dichotomy, is that you need the motivation to adhere to your discipline. At some point, you need to have motivation, and you can't just discipline your way out of it.
