I’m a professional furniture restorer and it’s reassuring to see someone making proper furniture without epoxy or industrial metal bases. Your shop is amazing and huge, I definitely have space envy! Keep up the good work 👏
I made a mantel for a customer just before Christmas. I used the same techniques that you did on the joinery that you did except I used biscuits to help align the edges. After rounding corners and distressing it I lightly burned it with a torch then I took a wire wheel to it then stained it with walnut stain and sealed it. The customer couldn't stop saying how much they loved it!
I always enjoy another man's technique that works just as good or better😃 I made furniture in Holland. For making large surfaces look old I used a convex knife on my 850 Festool planer and a Festool orbital sander. For scratches a scraper and for dents a key chain with big heavy keys. Watching this makes me miss this work.
I rented a shop space in a 150 year old factory. That's what the beams looked like. Though, I must say, what a waste of that beautiful work to put it on that boring grey wall.
Quand on a grandi dans une ferme sous une vieille charpente, l'œil aiguisé reconnaît tout de suite une fausse poutre, une imitation, de la déco. Mais bravo ! C'est quand même un sacré boulot...
Follow up question. How long are You waiting to hit it with the restore after you stain? And what grit is that you’re using? Thank you! As always great video
Seen your shorts, decided a sub to the channel was a no brainer.. mate you've got some skills there and quite the shop too. I have a tendency to make stuff from old pallets etc. There's something satisfying about making something by hand...
If you live in New Hampshire I would come work for you for nothing, zero, naaaadaaaa just to help and learn from you. I'm retired and got nothing to do so it would be a pleasure to work for you!! But I'm sure you don't live in New Hampshire. You do wonderful work!! DP
It all looks great except for the ends. Instead of the “caps”, you should have inserted an end grained piece on each end. You are better than that bro.
Не увидел смысла в такой сложности изготовления,ведь распиливали цельную древисину такого же размера.Такая задумка сгодится только для контрабандистов😂
There’s a big mounting board that fits inside the mantel that gets fastened to the wall first and then the mantel fits over top and gets fastened to it
A hand hewn beam would not have been hewn by an axe not much more then a hatchet. You should’ve used an axe with a much larger head and done more work with an axe. It looks like someone hit it with a hatchet a few times.
Most definitely, LOVE the majority of his builds but this one is lacking.. I'm a builder for a very prominent barnwood company, we do MANY faux beams out of hemlock, white oak, etc, and this one looks like a beginner DIY, the character is the best part and you can't just take a couple of swings and expect to bring it anywhere close to believable, and even though i scratch my head because he's phenomenally skilled with 50k+ in tools and this is what gets produced, if he's satisfied and its going in his house theres not much anyone can tell him 😏
I use to use a power hand plane to make axe marks then cut the tear out off with a knife. I was doing this with solid white oak beams. Not this junk ass wood he's using

I am so jealous of your table saw setup ! I’m a carpenter myself. I do trim and custom cabinets. Love the content

The pros always make it look soooo easy
Nice… a master at work
Great job as always! Couple questions. What did you spray on it? What color and brand of stain did you use? Always appreciate watching your projects.
Thanks! It’s a Varathane reactive stain
Toujours impressionné de la précision et de la beauté de votre travail et un peu jaloux de l'équipement et de la grandeur de votre atelier 😁
Great work! What is the band saw tool you're using to mill the log? Keep up the good work!

Gorgeous build Dusty!!! What is that sander/brush you used to help make it look rough and aged?
Thanks! It’s called the Restorer
What attachments did you use for the restorer?
It's called a burnishing sander m8 there's loads of makes on ebay. 👌
You are out of this world omg this so cool
What is that hand held drum/wheel sander you are using? I gotta get me one of those.

Inspiring! Looks really nice
A man can never have enough clamps.
Beautiful!

Я правильно понимаю? Мужик взял брус и сделал из него брус?

What is the dark brown finish you applied at the end?

Mantle, perhaps??
Machines, machines and machines,,,,,,,,,
I think IT would look better without making IT look old.
Brother, the nails in the corners need to be hammered in at 45 °, so that it is as strong as possible from these nails.
The strength comes from the glue. The nails are just holding things in place until the clamps get put on.
no mask or ear protection??
Wife: now the tv is too small!!!
Nice!
How did you hang it on the wall without showing fasteners
Very nicely done!!
he mounted a board to the wall 1st then mounted the mantel to the board
Dusty how’s that mount to the wall , French Cleat? Thanks
There’s a big mounting board that fits inside the mantel that gets fastened to the wall first and then the mantel fits over top and gets fastened to it
made the tv look tiny
A good example, that the US fake and fast mentality isn't even stopping at artisan work.
