- I finally get to add the foam core in the new DIY rudder for my sailboat.
Electric motor fault finding: • Broken Electric Motor?...
There was one more video. It was actually better than this one but I can't find it.

10:27 bloody hell, who has 2 gallons of 407 filler compound lying around the work shop? This guy is living the dream :) Love the content, great looking rudder
Thanks for sharing Mr Angle-Grinder's autopsy. R.I.P.
I just yelled to my wife that "Mads finally finished the rudder!" She came in and looked at me like I was two cents short of a nickel. (crazy in U.S. parlance). Congrats Mads, it looks great.
I am working on my own rudder and thank you for the detailed information. I also need to do the foam part and the strainer is a good tip. I had to watch this movie about 10 times before I actually noticed it!
I’m sticking around for the episode when Athena gets up on a plane. A must see.
i dont want to be in a plane...its scary
This channel should have a million subscribers. My favourite show.
My girlfriend Ava = My fiancé Ava
A somewhat extensive refit = An extensive refit
Love ya mads, been so nice seeing you, your life and Athena progress over the last few years x
By Mads' standards, an "extensive" refit is what Leo is doing with Tally Ho.
you should be very proud of the spiffy job you've done on your rudder, 11 at least
By far BEST diy on You Tube!!!!!!!!
I am envious of your ability to learn electric motors.
Learning is just a matter of reading AND doing.. go for it!

Fingers crossed she'll be done by 2021 ;) Just kidding she needs to be done in a year and a half :)
Well whenever she gets done, she'll be better than new! 😀

I'm sure when this is done Mads will have some excellent insight into the "Ship of Thesus".
Nothing says Spiffy like a shiney new rudder. :) On a related note when you re-install the dodger I would suggest temporarily mounting it and test fitting the glass and new frames. This will help you determine if the glass needs to be in before mounting (perhaps to hold the frame rigid) or if the frame needs adjusting to the cabin top. I know these parts came apart not that long ago but work as been done and new parts added and things may have changed.
What an awesome day! I have been looking forward to this episode since you pulled the old rudder off the boat. Glad you went the fairing compound/primer route... the spiffy way is the "Sail Life" way after all.:-) I am only sad that I can't click the thumbs-up button more than once.
"Pokey bits and shiny stuff", very technical indeed! Thanks for putting all of these videos out there, it helped tremendously with the work I have been doing on mine to fix blisters on the hull. The Flexisand kit was also an awesome find, I used that for the fairing of the hull repairs and it made life much easier and helped to eliminate a ton of wasted epoxy. They made at least one sale off of your use of those and the fiberglass guys in the yard were impressed enough to go and buy some for their use as well.
And when the rudder is !FINALLY DONE!, Mads gets to dig another hole under Athena so the shaft has enough clearance. :)
Very, very fine work!!
I can’t believe how excited I have just been over watching foam expand! I need help. Next episode please!!
You are The Jedi Rudder Master !!!
Really appreciate your time and effort mads . Top notch everything.and your so patient.
Namaste from California..
The more I enjoy watching you work the more I want to sell my boat. On the market in June!
up on a plane slayed me. I know I'm a giggly bitch but the comedic timing there was on point.
At least it will be ready for that, WHEN it happens!! I've always wondered, will it be 3 knots, 4 knots, or maybe 7knots, when it planes out?? Lololol
ser mycket bra ut! gillar att du är så noga med allt du göra!
My friend who runs a marina where my boat is told me to stop watching you Mads. Apparently I've caught the sanding bug! ;D
That's a Pretty Spiffy Rudder, even without the paint.
smiled thru the entire video.
That is the nicest rudder I've ever seen.
So glad the foam didn't distort the rudders shape , it looks pretty darn high on spiffy meter . Well done skipper..
Wow,wow, wow! You out do yourself in every video. Your skills are impressive.
I spoke with West Systems about doing some blister repair, They advised that I use 406 for filling in the small blisters and fairing. Apparently if you don't use micro balloon fairing compound you have less to worry about with water intrusion. YMMV
SANDAMONIA! I love it!
I been steady watching your videos and I can admit, I'm happy to see you finish that rudder. I can't wait for day you video your first cast off into the world of cruising with your girl on aboard Athena. Fingers crossed all things continue you work in your favorite and the mountains you may come across, only turn out to be mole hills. I will keep watching your progress videos.
The expanding fiberglass phone gives me a lot of ideas for filling voids where I wish I had more strength thanks for doing that.
Fantastically spiffy job on that rudder Madds!
Hello Matt. I so enjoy your channel. Not that it matters but in the last couple of years I discovered that my father’s ancestors immigrated originally to the US from Denmark via Scotland which really makes me want to visit there before I get much older. I am so impressed with your ability in the Athena diy project and that rudder looks like it could be a factory built unit. Well done and your zeal for this project is outstanding. Good wishes from the better half and I and keep up the great info. Rick.
I cannot wait to see Athena up on a plane.Great job Mads.
boy how time flies, just seems like i watched the last video the rudder day :)
Mads and Eva is going to have the best sailing videos in the cruising world. Ya this broke no big deal, we did that to fix it.
That is one strong rudder!
I am so happy about seeing "our" rudder finished...!!!. And also thanks for the autopsy..!
The time lapse of filling the rudder was cool !
You need to update your "inventory control" application so you stop running out of consumables !
Great outcome. Glad it all worked out OK.
Super cool episode. That is one very spiffy rudder. You do very good work.
that was an epic rudder build ,it looks fantastic.
Great video as usual. I watch many utube shows for hours every day (I'm retired), but I actually look forward to seeing yours every Sunday, more than any others. Thanks.
It's cool to see your skills continue to grow and get better. That rudder came out great !! The difference between good and great is one more step, but for most of us the impatience to get it done quick gets the best of us...LOL
Yeahhhhhhhhhhh!!! The rudder is wicked-awesome!!!! Great job and I have done nothing and feel a sense of accomplishment. You must be over the moon!!!
Bit late now but maybe the dense cruddy stuff that came out was intentionally a lot heavier to increase stability and reduce vibration. Brilliant job mind, especially the vacuum lay up.
Fantastic channel, great work. Your writing tomorrow's boat restoration reference book!
About your grinder, I noticed that the armature looks as if it has been rubbing against the field, this is caused by loose bearings or bearing slot built in to the housing. If the armature touches the field it will leave shiny marks and eventually grab hold of field thus the weird noise you heard. The motor very quickly heats up it it can't turn, then smells burnt. The erratic ohm reading could be caused by carbon trapped between the copper bars causing short, clean with broken hacksaw blade thinned on grinder to fit between the bars. Retest after cleaning, or repair bearing problem and test armature in grinder. Even bad armature will turn but produce blue sparks. good luck with grinder, may still have life. Since you like to build gizmos, you can build a test stand for armature and spin it out of the housing, if interested I can explain how. Just leave comment.
It has to be extremely gratifying for you to check these projects off the list. If we only had a time machine and could see Athena still sailing a century from now. I say that because of your hard work and dedication. Hi Ava your man is pretty spiffy.
Mads - I eagerly await every video and had a good laugh at today's remark about the final rudder fairing to promote planeing. I have a 1980s "ultra light" racing sailboat that I am trying to get down to the class specified minimum weight. Your videos have been very useful for ideas. One weight reduction target is non-structural plywood to be replaced with foam/glass panels or balsa/teak veneer panels where beauty is important. Since you have mastered resin infusion and are redoing the interior anyway, think of the opportunities for Athena weight reduction! For just a few weeks labor, you could get Athena to jump onto a plane maybe as much as 1/10 % faster.
I've heard of a racing skipper who had a fake anchor (the rules required an anchor) made up from glassed and painted foam to save a few kilos. All was good until the day they actually *needed* to anchor.. crewman dropped the anchor in, and it floated!
Congratulations Madz on completing the rudder construction - it looks fantastic. You should not feel the need to apologise for taking that extra 0.01% of overall time in doing that final bit of fairing to improve the spiffiness rating.👍😀⛵️
Finally one more major step completed. Congrats, Mads. SWV ⛵️🦇
This is global news! Mad has finished the rudder! I am in awe with the results and the great lessons you are teaching us. Thank you Mad.
“There is an easy way and a spiffy way”. 57k subscribers chuckle knowing that Mads never does the “easy way”.
Thank you Mads for this video. In my opinion your professional standards have been on display during this entire rudder project as you have definitely graduated from amateur status. Take care and have a great week ahead.
If you are still going to just glass over the stringers, I would again recommend injecting them with penetrating epoxy. I use total boat, I thin it with 1/4 part acetone or denatured alcohol. It runs like water but dries harder than a rock.
Just watching you work on your rudder and noticed how it resembles an aileron and suddenly I thought, “No trim tabs” which shocked me since it’s been ages since I even touched an airplane. Then again, your attitude reminded me on how OCD me and my former co workers used to be when it came to repairs. 👍👍👍🙂
Don't worry.. trim tabs have their uses on yacht rudders too... they're particularly good for reducing the load on electro-mechanical autopilots, extending their lifespan considerably. They're nice to have for wind-vane autopilots too... But they're a lot easier to set up on stern-hung rudders. Putting a trim tab on Mads' rudder would be a huge pain in the rear, if it could be done at all.
I believe you can feel the difference between a "clean" and "dirty" rudder at the wheel, especially when the boat really gets moving at hull speed and when surfing down big waves.
On a dirty, poorly-fared rudder there will be a slight vibration or humming that gets worse the more dirty it is. This will be fed back to the wheel if there is good feedback in your steering system.
Also the trailing edge will cause this too if it isn't well-shaped when running with a higher angle of attack such as when experiencing a bit of weather or lee helm.
When we redid the bottom of BD and fixed and fared the rudder, it was like a whole different boat. It glided through the water abd thr only time I feel vibrations at the wheel are when motoring. The prop is going to be giving messy thrust over the rudder no matter what you do, I think.
Wow, very impressive!
That my friend is one spiffy rudder. Well worth the effort
Absolute genius with the detail in Glassing, Fairing and Finish... Any thoughts to ever just build your own boat from scratch?? You obviously have the talent..
Pew pew... yeah I think those fumes got you already mate. Great vid.
Wonderful job, thanks for sharing.
You have done a GREAT job on that rudder!!!!!! WOW
"Athena is going to foil on this rudder" Awesome work Mads!! Thanks for sharing your work
Outstanding I enjoyed watching , I have learned a lot of repair technique from your detail to attention, you are truly the best DYI all I can say is thanks for your expertise.
Awesome work! Thanks so much for sharing with us.
The Rudder looks amazing! Thank you for another awesome video Mads :)
Enjoy your work ethic Mads. Great work.
Nice job, just put a coat of interlock 2000e. Got to get that boat in the water soon.
That sure is purrrrrrty! I'm impressed!

AWESOME RUDDER! And you made it Mads, beautiful work.
Excellent video Mads. I love the progress on the rudder. Can't wait for it to be done.
Mads, rudder looks awesome. All that glorious, glorious sanding looks great. Can't wail to see it finished.
Just wow! What a great job Mads, I take my hat off to you - a fine job done 👍
Happy happy, joy joy! A new Sail Life video on a rainy Sunday on the Gulf Coast.......
Congratulation Mads, very nice job. 👏
Looks great, thank you.
Wonderful work. Well done. Thanks for sharing
Great video Mads... thank you for going more gently on the power tool noise too! You’re a true gent! That rudder is truly truly awesome! What a great result...
So amazing to see that rudder finally come together. Impressive!!!
Great rudder!
The rudder came out so good. Amazing work!
WOW !!! That was amazing. You did as always a fantastic job. There is literally nothing you can't do. Keep up the great work.
Amazing once again Madds the rudder does indeed look spiffy
great video as always, great job with the rudder project! Never change a thing, ive been subscribed for years and still love your channel as much now as I did then. Unless you wanna add a few more AvE and This Old Tony antics, they are always welcome, too!
The live stream was fun! Congratulations on the rudder, looks very spiffy. Looking forward to the cement boat tour 😉
You can get an armature for less, and the "outrage" was mainly in part because newer units are ... well in short words, crappy. I still think you should replace the brushes and see if it moves or not. I've seen armatures spec odd but still work.
Awesome, love your work 😃
Mads, that is a thing of beauty, i can can really understand your pride.
Great video! ❤️always makes my day!
It is beautiful!
If ever there is a choice between doing things the easy way or the spiffy way, I think we all know which one Mads will choose
Next time you make a mold, if you build up plug (old rudder) with some tape, etc, when the mold is made it will have a recess for the glass to join the two halves. You will have a bit less fairing to do. Wondering if the epoxy foam expanded (buldged) the rudder out any from the pressure of the expansion or curing.
The attention to detail is amazing! (understatement). I watch every week in preparation to begin work on our Tayana 37. Thank you for the effort you put in not only on Athena but these great videos. Very inspiring and motivational. See you out there on the big blue.
Amazing work on the rudder - better than new! I am also starting a rudder re-core project on my Kirby 30 here in Canada, but it seems that foaming epoxy is not available that easily in north america. I am going to call the US distributor for Sicomin and see what they can do. Thanks for the inspiration.
That is truly impressive. 👍🏻
