i found an important thing about someone called Genovevo de la O:
"Genovevo de la O (January 3, 1876 - June 12, 1952) was an important figure in the Mexican Revolution in Morelos.
He was born in Santa María Ahuacatitlán, Morelos, to sharecropper parents. He was dedicated to the plight of Mexico's peasants and came to be an outstanding Liberation Army of the South guerrilla general. After Emiliano Zapata's death, he and the other guerrillas threw their lot in with Álvaro Obregón and went on to become a minor but long-lasting figure in national politics."
    Found this on Genius:
"Zach is dropping hits like Genovevo de la O, he’s not just sitting on the commode (slang for toilet), basically doing nothing. In regards to his own work, Zach is saying “deliver revolutionary material like Genovevo de la O or quit making music and go do something else”.
Sly reference to the idiom “Sh!t, or get off the pot” - meaning to get moving!"

Zach’s grandfather was a revolutionary in Mexico and fought in the Mexican Revolutionary war. Zach spent a lot of time on a commune after RATM broke up. He’s very much still connected with his Chicano roots

This song is about America’s military industrial complex and how we fund the military over helping our own citizens. “What we don’t know keeps the contracts alive and moving” (government contracts with defense/weapons manufacturers) “They don’t gotta burn the books the just remove them (government keeps the people in the dark so it can do what it wants). While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells (we keep buying weapons as fast as we imprison citizens) They rally round your family with a pocket full of shells. Amazing track. I hope you either do People of the Sun or Down Rodeo next.

Genovevo de la O was a Mexican Revolutionary. Possibly a Zapatista Revolutionary. Zack appears in a number of projects without RATM. There is a project with former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore and maybe someone from Queens of the Stone Age.

Yup, reactors almost always start on killing in the name, and its a horrid intro into what RATM is capable of. It has a great meaning, but killing in the name is more of a anthem than a lyrical piece. Worth listening to, and knowing, but not a top recommendation in my opinion. Voting yes for more Rage Against The Machine!
I was also a nu metal kid growing up. I got into metal when I was 11 (through Nightwish) and then nu metal in my teens, then different subgenres of metal after that. I've been a metalhead for about 20 years, just got into hiphop last year because of Knox Hill's reactions and Ren. I've liked some rappers before that (and I've been slowly getting into other genres besides metal, rock and punk since my early 20s), but Knox really made me start to understand rap as a genre and Ren's Hi Ren was the first rap song I ever loved as much as I love metal. I'm still kind of a newbie with rap and hiphop, but I'm learning.
Also, Tom Morello is such a dope guitarist!

I studied poetry many, many moons ago and I appreciate your intelligent break-down of the lyrics. This was probably the song that got the most air-play back then. I felt some hope when Rage burst on the scene because the 80s had so much commercial, apolitical stuff dominating the air-waves. I felt a big "Yes!" burst out of my numbed soul. Some thirty years later, they are still relevant. When you mentioned Killing In the Name and said, "cause I know that one's against the system", I said out loud, "They all are. Get ready, brother."

It’s also helpful to know what the current events in America were at that time. The phrase “rally around the family” was the motto of the religious right (which also had what they called the Moral Majority). They were heavily involved in politics and campaigning for censorship of music, movies, books, art, etc. They were the driving force behind the Satanic Panic during the ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. You can actually see footage of the lead singer from Twisted Sister, Frank Zappa, and other artists giving interviews and testifying before Congress on the matter. They did score some wins. They are the reason we now have ratings on movies, music, and video games. That movement eventually became quieter, but never went away. They’ve been working more behind the scenes and we are now seeing a resurgence of their ideology in our society and politics at large. I feel like we are now reliving it and there’s a lot at stake for us if they win. They’ve never been shy about saying that they are pro-life….unless you oppose them or even just hold different beliefs than they do. Then they want you dead. Or at least incarcerated. And if you don’t want war, they claim you hate our troops and are anti-soldier. Even though they are the ones sending those soldiers to die for nothing and them refusing to really support then beyond lip service when (or if) they come back. But they always claimed that they were saving our families. Thus the “rally around the family” tagline. Of course this only applies to their version of the perfect husband, wife, and kids family with stereotypical gender roles.
When you watch the live video for “Killing in the Name”, it means more of you know what Zach is referring to in the beginning. President George W Bush had recently said “I am the decider” when he was questioned about what he was doing.

Tom Morello plays, like, a million different instruments. Difference is, they're all guitar. That dude can make a guitar do absolutely anything.

This song has a lot of social topics, one comes from the album entirely - Evil Empire is a dig at Regan who called the USSR that. (Zach and Tom are socialist-communists). “Bulls on Parade” refers to Republicans whose party is the elephant (a bull elephant is a male) intertwined with a bullish market which is an aggressively rise in stocks. The connection: funding war. Greed.
There’s a LOT to unpack in the lyrics, that’s just one.

The "Rally around the family, with a pocket full of shells" is referencing how politicians at the time (mostly republican, but democrats too) liked to say they were "Rallying around the family" to justify their actions, but at the same time they were really just bought by the gun/military lobbies. Most of this song is about the military/industrial complex. Money for shells, but not food/schools etc...

Very few own their moves like Tom Morello with the scratching. Over 20 years it's been and no one but him is given mass credit for doing this.

Everyone does Killing in the Name, awesome song, but want to dive into RATM pick one like Down Rodeo, Guerrilla Radio, or Take the Power Back

I used to think it was a reference to de la soul, but found out De La O is a Mexican Revolutionary, which makes sense as De La Rocha comes from a long line of Mexican revolutionaries.

awesome react video man. couple thoughts: de la O in the first verse refers to a Zapatisa revolutionary (which Zach is all about) I think but is also probably a play on zach "de la rOcha". The reason it sounds like nu metal is because Rage is literally proto nu metal (or whatever the fuck "rap rock" is) and every nu metal band would probably happily acknowledge that. Killing in the name would be cool but you should really react to Freedom or Sleep Now In The Fire or Know Your Enemy

Red and black flags are both libertatian socialist and antifa flags, which at least Zach & Tom belong to (not sure about the other 2, pretty sure they do too but they don't really talk about their political leanings)
Good choice of song, Denzel Curry did an amazing cover of it too. My personal fave is Bullet in the head, but you can't go wrong with RATM no matter where you go next.

Hell yeah!! 🤘 About time you dove into this fire 🔥 Especially if you used to rock nu metal like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. I believe RATM is technically categorised as the same genre, though they have a much more funky sound. So damn good tho. You can’t not love those groovy riffs. Also it’s just an obvious rabbit hole for you after all the Renactions cause Ren has said that Zack de la Rocha is one of his favourite MCs 🐰🕳️ Anyway do more! 😂 Calm Like A Bomb is a banger 😊

I do love Nu-Metal and it had/has some legit bands that i still listen to anyday... but Rage Against The Machine , for me, was /is the only band i've ever truly considered Rap-Metal/Metal-Rap/Hip-Hop-Metal/Metal-Hip-Hop (and they even go as far as to expertly mix Funk into many of their songs)! By far one of the best bands i've ever listened to!
