I got my hamster from pets at home I've had them all my life and they have always lived over two! But I think that's just to my amazing pet care 😅 great video Victoria.
Emza 89 ~ Some hamsters can really take a while to tame. Some are easy, some are hard. Just remember to let him/her come to you. They might never be fully tamed, but it’s ok because so,e hamsters just like being “wild” instead.
Yeah, I've just gotten a new hamster from Pets at Home where I bought my cage and everything. Glad I found this channel, and I've ordered him a new cage he'll hopefully be able to move in soon.
The only suitable cage I managed to find frim PAH was online. The biggest cage I could find in-store was only 441sq inches, and labelled as "extra large" 🙃.
@@m3e7 Same I got my hamster a cage but it’s only 200 sq inches so I made a bin cage and I just need to put more bedding in (7-8 inches) and buy a new wheel
Yesterday when I went to get a hamster from pets at home, they said i wasnt allowed because apparently a dwarf will bite through a plastic storage bin cage. So we bought one of their cages which where ridiculously small (they had a "starter" cage and a "living" cage) and we returned it today at a different pets at home. There is no way it can bite through our cage.
They handed both the baby hamsters we bought from there to us in a green ventilated cardboard box. This then went inside a Quality Street chocolate tub, and then straight home in a taxi. Both were Syrians mind, not sure about a dwarf. Edited to add, both at different times!
~ I’m not even sure of they should be allowed to “not allow you” to get a hamster, that’s kind of rude. Weird, I mean sure they chew but... not that much!
It’s great that kids pick these up when getting hamsters, get all the wrong supplies, then give their hamster a horrible life. Its really problematic when you don’t even know how to care for the animal your selling
In my pets a home store, the employees give better care advice if you go in and ask. When purchasing an animal, they ask you if you have all the right things, cage, food, toys, ect. The employees are well educated and are passionate about animals 😊
I am 10 and I have everything suitable for my dwarf hamster I always wanted a hamster and my dad got me one but he had one before so he new what he needed so he helped me get him a good cage for him he got me toys a wheel food bedding and more things my hamster is so happy and that’s thx to him and Victoria

Living in britain and being an occasional customer of pets at home - i can definitely say that the reason they don’t put the extra details in these pamphlets/leaflets e.g. minimum cage sizes and sizes of wheels - is because they want to sell their products regardless and they do stock certain brands which arnt considered suitable.
Its super frustrating but its how these big companies work 😫 If something doesnt suit them aka their stock in this instance, They wont suggest otherwise which could potentially lower their sales
can we just talk about how beautiful tori looks, also when I'm older I do kinda wanna work in pets at home and hopefully make the care better there, maybe rodent mills could stop and pets at home and other pet shops could maybe get their animals from ethical breeders or shelters instead of mills
Same! I want to work at Petco and give people tips since I know for a fact people try to get pets their knowing nothing about them, if they did their research, they wouldn’t be there getting the rodent.
Funny part is: I read the care guide of PaH, and the person selling me the hamster said everything the exact opposite of it anyway like "sawdust is fine" "buy a plastic cage, they love it" and "hamsters dont need room, they are really boring/ or side pets, that like solitude away from humans" "they can be kept in groups even Syrians until they're like, 1 yr old" I left feeling so confused, and only really learnt what to do with my hammy through these types of videos, so thank you from the UK! x
i really wish i took better care of my hamsters when i first got them, i was uneducated, critter trail cage and bat diet :(, but luckily i found your channel a week into having them and now they have proper wheels, 600 square inches each (in their own cage) and loads of bedding! i wanna thank you for what you do!

I love how people just market stuff in stores like items that are not safe or good for your hamster, and just make it so expensive including making it more expensive than what you would buy to actually take good care of your hamster. Then they try to make it look cute so people will want to buy it so the company can get money. This needs to stop. They shouldn’t involve money into taking care of an animal. But that’s the world these days. I hope the pet stores will eventually change this. But thank you for being there to tell people that whatever they’ve been told in stores is wrong, and then giving the RIGHT information. Thank you Victoria😸
When i was in pets at home last week one of the employees my told me syrians shouldn't have sand baths and that it's dangerous for them... That was when I realised they don't know anything about hamsters at all

i do like pets at home unfortuately they do stock small cages,i have noticed their own brand of cages do come in a fairly reasonable size but not super big.they do have on display the hamster heaven cage which is a good size cage and this is the cage i have for my dwarf hamster.they have recently started to sell more natural treats and herbs and grasses,i do not work for pets at home only shop there.
Yeah I agree but they do sell the Savic hamster heaven and a Savic plaza cage, I also do like there natural products as they have lots of rose wood herbs and things like that!
When I was thinking about getting a hamster I was at the pet store and I saw a pamphlet for hamsters (not this store) and grabbed it. Thank goodness I forgot it in my friend's car because it was filled with improper care lol

I just got my syrian hamster today!!! His name is Gimli, it is my first hamster in almost 10 years and I've only had 2 dwarf hamsters before.. He was so cute burrowing himself into safety/to go back to sleep on the way home I cried hahaha!! :') I am so excited, I've watched so many of your video's in preparation allready ^^
@@elizacowie2512 No I didn't. I live in the Netherlands, so we have different petstores but I researched well beforehand. So I found a woman on Facebook near where I live, who breads hamsters in her home (not a large scale mill but very much as an exploded hobby it seemed). She takes great care of her hamsters and has requirements for buyers. I had to send photos of my enclosure for example. And I can always contact her with questions 😊 It would buy my next one from her as well I think. Gimli is now almost a year old, happy, healthy and still going strong. He makes me so happy, hope he will stay around for another good while 🥰

hey victoria! i have learned a lot of knowledge from you and without you i wouldnt've known sawdust was bad, the 450 square inch minimum and lots of other things! my friend also recently got a hamster and once i told them what i learned from you they realised their critter trail cage was too small! i appreciate what you're doing and i encourage you to continue spreading this great knowledge! you're amazing and keep up the great work! (would also like to add i originally thought bedding was the stuff hamsters sleep in lmfao)
My hamster passed away on Thursday this week ☹️ edit I loved her so much but she only lived 5.5 months I’m confused 🤷♀️ I loved her And the floor space was over the bare minimum 🥺
juliet glazer it might have been your bedding but f you had pine and cedar it can cause respiratory problems and also if you had chinchilla dust instead is sand then that will also cause the same thing and if you have a mesh wheel and a white bottom because that can cause bumble foot Victoria also has a separate video discussing illnesses
I'm sorry for your loss! Unfortunately some hamsters have compromised genetics due to inbreeding or other poor breeding practices which can cause things internally to be wrong, things you wouldn't physically be able to notice. This is why not supporting petstores is important.
I've had 2 hamsters from Pets at Home and they've both lived to be over 2 years old and died of old age. I pretty much followed the Pets at Home guide word for word for our first hamster. They actually care about the animals wellbeing and have Vets in store for advice and help. They know what they're doing!
Sometimes care has nothing to do with lifespan unfortunately, a lot comes down to your genetic line. Pets at home is still a large chain petstore that cares about profit.
I'm in a hamster group here in Sweden on fb. They scream almost straight out with a dwarf hamster alone. MUST be two otherwise you are horrible and breaking the law. Also applies to vegetables with dwarf hamsters, NEVER sweet vegetables. Absolutely never, not even a little now and then. Of course, I understand why they say it but a little too much. That's why I listen more to you or other youtubers with the same experience. Everything isn't perfect.

So does mine I looked it up and it really scared me that he had trouble breathing and I took him to the vets.... He was fine tho.... And I wasted my money but better safe than sorry
Coming from someone who works in a pet store, we don’t always have a choice in the products the store sells... even those that aren’t safe/good for certain pets. All we can do is try and educate people. We also deny selling pets to someone who refuses to buy the proper materials.
Recently in pets at home they have added rules such as they will only sell you a hamster if you already have a cage and if you don’t you can buy a cage there, luckily the cages they sell now are MUCH better then before! They also won’t sell you a fish unless if you have a certain size tank I think.
@@VictoriaRaechel Thanks! I bought 2 different ones, and usually give a mix of both, one is on the good list, the other on the not recommended, they appear to be very similar mixes though! I do also supplement the food with additional nuts/seeds as treats, as the mixes usually contain very little of it.
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! HELP, VICTORIA! I just measured my male dwarf hamster's bin cage while watching one of your videos after having it for a couple of months. It was sold as having 475 sq. inches. IT HAD ONLY 280! It was a LOT of work to make, so my parents said we can't make another one. I'm 12, and I don't have the money for an additional critter trail or cage add-on. I don't know what to do! HELP!
i recently adopted a robo hamster that was living with one winter white hamster. he had a huge bite on his back from the other hamster so he was returned to the store. pet stores should clarify the risk that hamster have living together, especially hamsters that are different species.

I’ve had good experience woth my local pets at home they told us to get bigger cages and even recemonded great cages and now mine and my sisters hamsters are happy they told us the stuff they need to I was happy bout that :)

Hi Victoria, Today was a rough day, i moving houses and in my new house i will not have any room for my hammy. So the only option, was to find her a new home. So we did, a nice young experienced couple came to my house to pick up my little baby, lola, they were 2mins away when my dad was bringing her 40gallon tank to the door, i wanted to see Lola for the last time so i took her out and i held her. I then broke down into tears because i forgot how much i loved her and i really didnt want her to go to a bad home. So i changed my mind last minute and i told the people to go back home and try again with someone else. I really love Lola and i want her to be in the best home possible so i keeped her. She is the sweetest, cutest and cuddlyest hamster ever and i love her so much. When i got her, you were the only channel i watched and i loved her so much back then. I kind of gave up on her and didnt take her out often and now i am going to give her the best rest of her life she'll ever have!!!!! Love u Lola!!! 😘😘😘🐹🐹🐹🐹

I was in Pets at Home the other day, there are 'wood shavings' and 'sawdust'. On the saw dust packet I checked and it said it's not suitable for any hamsters - but their website says it is... the wood shavings it says it's suitable for hamsters. It doesn't say what wood it is though, I've had a thorough check since discovering Victoria's channel as I've used the wood shavings for all my hamsters in the past. I only bought the paper bedding yesterday to replace the wood shavings. My hamster's never had an issue with the wood shavings but she couldn't really burrow in it properly.
@@rockracingfan yes Ik. I just use the wood shavings from pets at home and I have 17 hamsters at the moment and they have never had problems with it. I sometimes use sand, soil, toilet roll and paper bedding for them to dig in tho as it’s easier for them to dig in that☺️

When I was 7 years old I wanted a hamster more than anything. I bought a hamster care book from petco and I don’t even remember where they talked about cages. Luckily my mom wouldn’t let me get a hamster. I’m so glad there are channels like you because 4 years later I wanted a hamster so I did my research from RUclips and now I actually know what hamsters need it’s sad to see that petstores aren’t as informed on the pets they have
Sometimes the pets at home cages can’t be that strong cuz I had a Syrian hamster that bit a big hole through the plastic of one and escaped but then there ones that are curved on the outside in stead of pointed so they can’t bite through it so I would recommend a cage like that for your hamster if it bites through stuff. :)
I miss Tater tots🥺🐹 she was sassy but cute and the smolest hamster. I loved her and watched from day one when victoria brought her home and until the day she passed away🥺 I will always remember her. R.I.P🐹
Sawdust is not save for hamsters but they sell it in the shops because hamsters aren’t the only animal they keep. They have other animals like rabbits that will need it!

peppy the russian dwarf Only gerbils can chew through plastic cages. Sad that those workers were getting confused with their species.

Yeah I agree but they do sell the Savic hamster heaven and a Savic plaza cage, I also do like there natural products as they have lots of rose wood herbs and things like that!

When I was thinking about getting a hamster I was at the pet store and I saw a pamphlet for hamsters (not this store) and grabbed it. Thank goodness I forgot it in my friend's car because it was filled with improper care lol

I just got my syrian hamster today!!! His name is Gimli, it is my first hamster in almost 10 years and I've only had 2 dwarf hamsters before.. He was so cute burrowing himself into safety/to go back to sleep on the way home I cried hahaha!! :') I am so excited, I've watched so many of your video's in preparation allready ^^

@@elizacowie2512 No I didn't. I live in the Netherlands, so we have different petstores but I researched well beforehand. So I found a woman on Facebook near where I live, who breads hamsters in her home (not a large scale mill but very much as an exploded hobby it seemed). She takes great care of her hamsters and has requirements for buyers. I had to send photos of my enclosure for example. And I can always contact her with questions 😊 It would buy my next one from her as well I think. Gimli is now almost a year old, happy, healthy and still going strong. He makes me so happy, hope he will stay around for another good while 🥰
Surprisingly my dwarf came pretty friendly and loving 😂 she’s the sweetest little thing, since day one.
I feed my hamster fruit and vegetables everyday such as apple, corn, Brussels Sprouts, lettuce and occasionally cilantro as well as his seed mix.
You are the only RUclipsr that I watch for my hamster actually me and my dad watch you to see if what we need for our hamsters

juliet glazer it might have been your bedding but f you had pine and cedar it can cause respiratory problems and also if you had chinchilla dust instead is sand then that will also cause the same thing and if you have a mesh wheel and a white bottom because that can cause bumble foot Victoria also has a separate video discussing illnesses
More than likely it was an internal health issue due to poor breeding.
I'm sorry for your loss! Unfortunately some hamsters have compromised genetics due to inbreeding or other poor breeding practices which can cause things internally to be wrong, things you wouldn't physically be able to notice. This is why not supporting petstores is important.

I've had 2 hamsters from Pets at Home and they've both lived to be over 2 years old and died of old age. I pretty much followed the Pets at Home guide word for word for our first hamster. They actually care about the animals wellbeing and have Vets in store for advice and help. They know what they're doing!
Sometimes care has nothing to do with lifespan unfortunately, a lot comes down to your genetic line. Pets at home is still a large chain petstore that cares about profit.
I'm in a hamster group here in Sweden on fb. They scream almost straight out with a dwarf hamster alone. MUST be two otherwise you are horrible and breaking the law.
Also applies to vegetables with dwarf hamsters, NEVER sweet vegetables. Absolutely never, not even a little now and then.
Of course, I understand why they say it but a little too much.
That's why I listen more to you or other youtubers with the same experience. Everything isn't perfect.

Coming from someone who works in a pet store, we don’t always have a choice in the products the store sells... even those that aren’t safe/good for certain pets. All we can do is try and educate people. We also deny selling pets to someone who refuses to buy the proper materials.

Recently in pets at home they have added rules such as they will only sell you a hamster if you already have a cage and if you don’t you can buy a cage there, luckily the cages they sell now are MUCH better then before! They also won’t sell you a fish unless if you have a certain size tank I think.
What kind of seed mix is the “high quality seed mix”? I would to get a good mix for my hamsters.

@@VictoriaRaechel Thanks! I bought 2 different ones, and usually give a mix of both, one is on the good list, the other on the not recommended, they appear to be very similar mixes though! I do also supplement the food with additional nuts/seeds as treats, as the mixes usually contain very little of it.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! HELP, VICTORIA! I just measured my male dwarf hamster's bin cage while watching one of your videos after having it for a couple of months. It was sold as having 475 sq. inches. IT HAD ONLY 280! It was a LOT of work to make, so my parents said we can't make another one. I'm 12, and I don't have the money for an additional critter trail or cage add-on. I don't know what to do! HELP!

i recently adopted a robo hamster that was living with one winter white hamster. he had a huge bite on his back from the other hamster so he was returned to the store. pet stores should clarify the risk that hamster have living together, especially hamsters that are different species.

Today was a rough day, i moving houses and in my new house i will not have any room for my hammy. So the only option, was to find her a new home. So we did, a nice young experienced couple came to my house to pick up my little baby, lola, they were 2mins away when my dad was bringing her 40gallon tank to the door, i wanted to see Lola for the last time so i took her out and i held her. I then broke down into tears because i forgot how much i loved her and i really didnt want her to go to a bad home. So i changed my mind last minute and i told the people to go back home and try again with someone else. I really love Lola and i want her to be in the best home possible so i keeped her. She is the sweetest, cutest and cuddlyest hamster ever and i love her so much. When i got her, you were the only channel i watched and i loved her so much back then. I kind of gave up on her and didnt take her out often and now i am going to give her the best rest of her life she'll ever have!!!!! Love u Lola!!! 😘😘😘🐹🐹🐹🐹

We actually call wood shaving sawdust most of the time so they may mean that xx
I was in Pets at Home the other day, there are 'wood shavings' and 'sawdust'. On the saw dust packet I checked and it said it's not suitable for any hamsters - but their website says it is... the wood shavings it says it's suitable for hamsters. It doesn't say what wood it is though, I've had a thorough check since discovering Victoria's channel as I've used the wood shavings for all my hamsters in the past. I only bought the paper bedding yesterday to replace the wood shavings. My hamster's never had an issue with the wood shavings but she couldn't really burrow in it properly.
@@rockracingfan yes Ik. I just use the wood shavings from pets at home and I have 17 hamsters at the moment and they have never had problems with it. I sometimes use sand, soil, toilet roll and paper bedding for them to dig in tho as it’s easier for them to dig in that☺️

When I was 7 years old I wanted a hamster more than anything. I bought a hamster care book from petco and I don’t even remember where they talked about cages. Luckily my mom wouldn’t let me get a hamster. I’m so glad there are channels like you because 4 years later I wanted a hamster so I did my research from RUclips and now I actually know what hamsters need it’s sad to see that petstores aren’t as informed on the pets they have

Sometimes the pets at home cages can’t be that strong cuz I had a Syrian hamster that bit a big hole through the plastic of one and escaped but then there ones that are curved on the outside in stead of pointed so they can’t bite through it so I would recommend a cage like that for your hamster if it bites through stuff. :)

Sawdust is not save for hamsters but they sell it in the shops because hamsters aren’t the only animal they keep. They have other animals like rabbits that will need it!
Sawdust really isn't good for any animal.
