I remember I was buying a small critter carrier to pick up my hamster from a reputable breeder. When I was checking out, the pet store employee stopped me and said "hey! Looks like you're getting a hamster? I just wanted to point out that this is not an appropriate home for them, a 40 gallon aquarium would be much better!". I then told her I had a huge Niteangel enclosure set up and showed her some photos, she was ECSTATIC!! I told her how much I appreciated her concern and voicing herself about proper care to customers. All employees should be trained this way!

We recently bought a hamster for our son and because of your channel I knew what to do. We brought a small little carrier to the store when we got the hamster (the yellow lid critter keeper looking thing from petco). Luckily the store employee asked us and made sure this is not what we intended on keeping the hamster in, it was only for transport. I explained that we made our own enclosure (following your DIY enclosures using purebond plywood and an IKEA complement glass shelf as the window on the front) that was 900-1000 square inches approximately. He seemed surprised and acted like this was overkill, but it should be the norm.

The wosrt part about pet stores is that their animals also come from mills and the majority of them are FULLY aware that the care they are recommending is not good care but they choose to do what will profit them the most which isnt good for the animal. But i beleive it is the pet stores as well as the brands as well as the owners faults that hamsters are being neglected. I put myself in this hamsters shoes and it was misery. Breaks my heart to even imagine what they go thru.

Educating people with proper hamster care is so important. I cant believe how much i got wrong when i bought my daughter a hamster a few years ago, wrong size cage, wheel, not a great diet for the hamster and even a ball for it to run around in. Thankfully i fell in love with this little hammo and started researching on what they actually needed.
Just because these animals are small doesnt mean that they dont need the care that other pets get.
Cheap to buy doesnt mean cheap to own. I think everyone is to blame apart from the innocent animal.
Research is key, if you cant provide what they need dont get one.

I bought a hamster in September of 2020 and he recently passed away. He had a great life and lived to be 2.5 years old. He was in a 50 gallon aquarium and he had a 12 inch wheel. My friend always said I "spoiled" him, which made me sad that my friends had no idea how to take care of hamsters. I showed them their videos and now my friends are fully educated.

People come over or if I'm not using a background for work on my webcam people are amazed that I have such a big space for "just one hamster". I always try to educate them, even if they're not a pet owner, about why giving them a suitable living space is necessary, hoping that it will raise awareness and hamster care will improve by getting the word out.

This is a great breakdown Victoria, it really shows why it's so difficult to change things. If everyone shares part of the blame then no one accepts the blame. If only one group was to blame it would be so much easier to apply pressure and change the behavior.
I also want to add additional people to blame, and those are people who write articles online sharing ''hamster care'' and giving misinformation or outdated information. When people google hamster care they usually get terrible advice in the results. I would also blame social media companies for not removing content that shows animal abuse after so many people point it out. If you search for hamsters on RUclips the videos that often pop up are unsafe maze videos, or if you search how to bathe a hamster you will get a video of a person showing how to bathe a hamster in water.
When people start using things like chat GPT it will become even worse and because it writes it's text in a believable way people will not bother to research more. A while ago I asked chat GPT about hamsters and the info it provided had some important things wrong, like hamster balls. Or it would give me one kind of info the first time and then a few months later something completely different.
I definitely agree with you that people who care about proper hamster care should if possible make content giving advice, tips and showing their hamster care as an example. Maybe if we can't remove bad content we can bury it in a lot of new content we make ourselves. That's one of the reasons I still post. I know this requires effort and time but I have been seeing more of new content creators lately and I'm a bit optimistic. 😊
    Sorry for the essay. 😅

If I would know who it was and their personal information I would let the animal police know they do not give proper care and living conditions. That hamster deserves a better life.
Pet stores and brands should be ashamed to offer non suitable inclosures. Due to them producing and offering it and stores to buy them and sell them is just what keeps this present. It is frustrating... I wish one day brands, producers and stores will get a fine if they sell or produce inproper objects and inclosures.

im currently saving up for a SUITABLE cage for him because i hate knowing that hes not living his fullest life. thank you for educating people, you’ve made so many animals happy. :)

You so right. I’ve had hamsters for 29 years 😮😳 and the care I gave back then is soooo different from today, but people are still keeping hamsters like I used too. Education is the key, but not everyone wants to learn or even relearn sadly. Companies have a lot to say for themselves, if they didn’t sell, we wouldn’t buy.

fun fact the "caution: contents hot" on the cups was actually a result of a lawsuit after a mcdonalds served extremely hot coffee to a customer that spilled on her lap and caused her very severe burns. this made people aware of how hot the coffee they were serving/being served actually was, as no one really knew the dangers before this incident, as well as to cover the company incase this happened again.

    • @VictoriaRaechel
      @VictoriaRaechel  Год назад

Most would assume that it is common sense that coffee is hot though which is what I was trying to get at! Common sense isn't all that common and which is why products need to have specific descriptions, especially on something like a small travel carrier that it shouldn't be for full-time use!

It hurts to see that hammy in such a small cage. My own dwarf lived in a carrier before I got her, it was around the same size the first kritter keeper was, maybe a bit smaller and the wheel was smaller than 4.5 inches.
Just had a "argument" with someone on facebook rodent group because they didn't want to accept that their hamster's cage and wheel were too small for a hamster. They told me to get a life in the end and that I was rude, even though I always do my best to not come across as rude. People are so difficult. 😫

I had lots of hamsters as a kid and feel terrible as I now know we did everything wrong. I got my kids a hamster and we have watched all your videos so we know how to care for him. We have had him for 4 days and when he wakes up we give him a nice dinner and when he hears my voice he will run to the side of the cage im on. I also now know he needs a bigger cage as this is the one from pets at home and its too small so we are going getting him a bin and making him a big cage. So thank you for making all these videos. ❤

Thank you for your videos because if I didn’t discover your channel my hamster would be living in a small cage with an improper diet. But thanks to you my hamster had a big bin cage with 9inches of bedding and a healthy diet.

We leapt with looking a month ago and got my 9YO a Syrian for his birthday. We got a Kaytee starter habitat and plunked poor Pumpkin in it and THEN we discovered your channel! I was working off my experience of having my own hamster in the early 90's. Pumpkin's living situation has been upgraded to a Kaytee "super" habitat (not that super, but as big as we can fit on our bookshelf). Thank you so much for putting all this information out here!!!

If you're ever looking to upgrade, try looking for as big of a glass tank (terrarium) you can fit on your shelf! Tanks are a great option (if not the best) and can be more affordable than those kaytee cages!

As a pet store employee that's "doing the Lords work" I can say with absolute certainty that even if a customer is given all the proper knowledge and tools to succeed that if that person doesn't care... Nothing can be done. I have dealt with HUNDREDS of people who use the "its just a ___" or the "I don't care..." or my personal favorite "its my kids job to take of it." I place 90% of blame on people too lazy to educate themselves. If you would do your research beforehand you would not have to rely on a 2 hour lecture session from me because that person actually has 0 idea of what they are doing and are asking 2,000 questions. And if research was done before it wouldn't matter if companies made the products, no one would buy them if they truly understood how garbage they are.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I feel like both, i mean the store is buying the brands items to sell them? Its the brands fault for making it but at the same time the pet store is buying those to sell them. But then the owner buys the products and dont do research. Idk thats my thought. Btw youre so pretty!!

surprisingly, petsmart (or at least the one my friend worked at) allows the employees to deny a sale! my friend who worked there was able to pet sales to people buying unsafe products
whenever i'm at a pet store, i always keep an eye out for people looking to buy rodents so i can inform them of proper care and the realities of owning rodents

I love your videos Victoria. I found your page last year and a have watched all of them now. I’m so glad you explained it this way. I agree, so many factors to blame. Let’s start with why would an unsupervised kid be allowed to buy a hamster? I got my first hamster in 2021 from a big box store & ran into the exact things you talk about. The store itself gives you bad information and then the employee who was checking me out was telling me nothing I was getting was ethical even though it’s what they had, so I was so confused and ended up going all over to find different products and research before setting everything up for him. They couldn’t provide me with suggestions of where or what to get just not what the only big pet store in my area had. I have done so much research since then and upgraded his cage multiple times. Sadly he passed after having cheek impactions from misalignment despite giving him lots of healthy chews. I have a sweet girl now who has a great life thanks to your videos. I also have kitties and pet mice so enjoy all your pet videos 🥰😻🐹
I know you’ve made videos on this too - but people should know common vets don’t treat hamsters & specialty vets can be very expensive. My hamsters quick anesthesia + procedure for impaction was $500.

I used to keep my hamsters in cages just under the minimum but that was the largest cage they sold at the pet store. Then I came across your video and I started adding more enrichment like sprays, a sand bath, forage but because of you now Both my hamsters are in large cages over the minimum with tons of enrichment, hides, an 11 inch wheel and much more!!!❤❤❤❤

the larger of the two critter keepers they used for the hamster is the exact size I used as a take home carrier when I got my gerbils. I can't imagine thinking that's an appropriate size for a permanent enclosure :(

I love when you see a pet store employee that actually knows the proper care of the animals the store sells. That being said I don't yell at employees when they try to sell the wrong care to me considering alot of them were only trained by store standards. I will however start polite conversation about the proper care and suggest this channel in hopes that they will also look into it themselves and that it will create change. Fighting with people on the subject and making them feel like dirt will just create defensiveness and in turn they will be less likely to listen and change their ways.

I have been looking at hamster supplies at PetSmart. My mom thinks that a 75 gallon is too big. I told her that it is the minimum and hamsters need a lot of room. She went up to one of the employees and asked them how big a hamster cage should be. The girl grabbed a pamphlet and read off what it said. And my mom said, “so you don’t need a 75 gallon?” And the girl said, “no, that’s huge!” 🤦‍♀️
