I've noticed a lot of complaints about the limitations of the po 33 ko by teenage engineering. The main one is the fact that you can only play 1 drum sound at a time while in the drum mode. This vid shows the workaround which is very simple. All you do is use melodic mode if you want more than one sound to play together and sample the sound you want such as hihats for example as i do in this vid. The keyboard sample comes from using the #VerySickMidi2 sample pack.

But now you've used up two of your 4 voices of polyphony for just a high hat. My advice: don't try to use one shots for drums at all. Sample complete drum loops which can be old school break beats, or complete sequences from FL Studio, and 808, whatever but record the beat as a loop where the high hats are already layered with the kicks, snares, claps, whatever. Then you can chop that up with the step sequencer the same way but still have 3 other voices of polyphony (bass, chords and leads/vox).
Also remember that when you put a high hat in a melodic spot, melodic spots get priority so if you get too many things going at once, it's going to choke out your drums anyway.
also true
" Then you can chop that up with the step sequencer the same way but still have 3 other voices of polyphony (bass, chords and leads/vox)."
But if you chop it up than you'll still have the monophonic problem with sounds cutting each other off again. So the best is to just loop drums or make a seperate pattern for highhats and make some minimal stuf with only two other sounds going. You can do some stuff with the effects for changes and make complete changes and add complete other samples but just not played on top of each other.
I’ve been messing around with the P.O.-33 myself! Another workaround Ive found is if you duplicate the drum kit to another drum sound, and as long as you don’t exceed the overall 4 voices and don’t mind having a duplicate kit, you can layer your drums that way! I’m about to post a vid of a little jam where I used this tech to get around the monophonic drums! Thanks for all the vids man! Just signed up for you patreon! Can’t wait for some practice kits!
my pleasure and thanks for the support!!
Hey LORD BEATJITZU, I've seen your name around a lot on the SP forums, Great Music!...Glad you're on the 33 as well
Obehko Beats only four voices max can be used to make a beat? This seems to be only good for looping drum breaks and music phrases.
Just read this. Great suggestion!
you can use another drumslot for hi-hats and /or percussion
true
You can even copy an existing drum into the slice of another kit, and that way it doesn't even use up any of the recording memory. Go to the kit, hit the snare, hold write+sound, press the number of the new kit, then press the number of the slice to copy to, then release write+sound.
павел соловцов I think that this guys tutorials are aimed at a sample-based boom bap hip hop crowd. When making this type of music you would want to leave one of the drum slots open for a loop. The po33 would autochop a two bar loop which you would re-arrange for the bulk of the melodic content. This would leave you with a free instrument track forthe bassline.
The Internet This is true. You could also sample a break that already has hats and other cymbals over the kicks and snares. That's what I would do if having a strong hi-hat presence was important to me.
Arif Memovic this is good for sampling and looping drum breaks and music phrases
Mann I love the way you teach!! I've been trying to sift through these videos looking for people who get straight to the point, and keep it interesting. Good job sir
much thanks
To help you out with the hi-hat problem:
You can just chose one sound out of your drum pattern - let's say your drum kit is in "folder" 11 and you want to copy it to folder 10 you just have to pick the sound you want (so you hear it) --> hold "write" + "pattern" + 10 + 1.
That means you copy your sound with "write" + "pattern" into folder "10" on the 1st button in that folder. That allows you to take 16 different sounds which you can use, pitch and filter without the usage of the other one!
Another cool thing: If you record a sample which has 4 or 8 or 16... bars into the "meldoic" section, you copy it (hold "write" + "pattern" + the number where it should go to (between 9 and 16)) in the "drum" section and it will cut the sample into 16 parts with the same length. If you record it straight into the "drum" section it will make 16 slices on the 16. loudest parts of the sample.
Best wishes and good luck!

Thanks for the video mate. Really informative. Recently got one of these. Your vid help me a boat load. Not just for the monophonic drums workaround. You've unlocked this little things potential. I was gonna send the 33 back but you swung it for me. Thanks again.
wow my pleasure
I just got one of these. Thanks for the very clear instructions, that are great for someone starting out like me. I doubt a newbie is going to use 808 for fl studio to to sample drum loops!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant work-around
PS- Thanks for very clear instructions how to use the PO
my pleasure
Holy cow u solved it!

Cutting the snares or kicks somtimes is funky.

Thanks for the this tip! Just got my 33 and it's real fun!! Sampled a shot of my 2yr old son using him in some beats lol.
my pleasure
Followed you just for this, buddy. Needed that knowledge. Got mine two weeks ago and I've hardly had a desire to touch any of my other gear. This was buggin me. weapon of choice right now is definitely the K.O. Cheers bro.

Awesome tip! I like that the limitation turned into a creative solution for pitched percussion.
I just picked up one on Azon that should come later today.

See this is the type of drawbacks people don’t seem to mention, glad there’s a workaround thanks for showing
my pleasure, feel free to share
Reason.... gonna cop this for on the go creativeness.

You really need to get the PO32 with the $100 Microtonic companion software. Oh man, one of the best drum machines I’ve messed with, seems pricey to pay the extra $100 for the software, but it is soooooo worth it. Ridiculous drums.
plz make a vid of you using it if at all possible
100$ wtf
cuckoo does a great vid on this, he’s one of the best to do it

You can also copy the drumkit to another slot so you have these same 16 sounds on 2 drumslots. That would make it duophonic. In theory you could copy the same drumkit to all 8 drumslots so its eight-o-phonic (octaphonic?)
It can only play four sounds at the same time though. So you can do like two drum sets and two melodic instruments without losing any steps.
I didn't know about the 4 things at a time limitation.
It's only 4 things on the same step though. So if you have 6 instruments, but only 4 of them play on each given step, then you're fine. Otherwise, it will start removing notes from steps, starting from the drums.

Nice workaround! Thanks for video!
You're welcome!
Great stuff...thanks for sharing this!
My pleasure!
Great tip! I love your videos, they are informative and they are Fun.
Thanks so much!
Love using this!!!!
Just wondered with this workaround- could you play the other way with this limitation and make your melodic samples duck by putting them all in the drum banks and use a kick (also in drum bank) to cut them off?
I don't have this machine but I'm very tempted now!
yes u could do that if u wanted
mpc2kxl, sp303, microkorg, and soon to be the po 33 :) your vids help alot whenever i wanna make sumthin funky

love yr channel! my weapons of choice are mpc3000, sp1200, and sp404.

You're a great teacher.
much thanks
I just put the MPC Live up and got my NI setup. Maschine MK3, Komplete Kontrol S25, Maschine Jam as my hardware. And Maschine2 and Ableton10 software
Skeezy Kelly would you like to trade your MPC Live for an Akai MPC 2500 (comes with 12 minutes, 07 seconds of sample time) an 8 GB SD Card (Paul Nice Drum breaks, 300 Classic Drum breaks)? Hit me up asap at drfangaz334@gmail.com if interested.
8 drum kits. 4 sounds at the same time, as long as they are from different kits. Of course you can have the same kit in more than one slot. Simples.
Dopeness! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 very clever!

Dope bro!

Cool... Thanks, man!

Nice. Thanks!

this video is redundant, you can just make use different drum and layer drums, 4 voice.polyphony regardless of.source
Oxygen 25 w/ ableton 10, sp-202, sp-505, Sp-404sx w/ PO-33 KO. the whole arsenal. lol

No one should have to deal wit dat. Great solution!
thanks for watching
thanks, you rule!

What the gameboy samplin Filt!!!!
bwahaha! waddup you ol FILT!! this thing is addictive!
Doesnt the workaround cutt off the melodic samples due to the hi hat?
not if its on a separate track
thank you!!!!!
my pleasure
What is the maximum note polyphony of this sampler?
one note which is why i made this work around vid
Algernon Franklin 4 sounds polyphony. This video is not so correct, coz you can use hi-hat from other drum kit - it also works.
404sx, 303, push 2, organelle, mv8000, and es-1!

Is it possible to disable quantize?
unfortunately no
My weapon of choice? FL studio
Cool for breakbeat/ electronic. Bad for sloppy j dilla mpc vibes :(

smodoemoe: Were you born in a barn close the D.A.W! lol Some people like dedicated hardware. Yep. Not everyone wants to spend the whole day in front of the computer then go home and make music staring at a computer. No doubt of course they have their place I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn't use it for recording.
