I agree completely that a brightly colored jacket is easily spotted even in overcast or rainy conditions. great video.

Rain Jackets in the PNW have “Non-Durable Water Repellent”. Useful life of maybe three years. Tried most brands. Patagonia torrentshell is a good 2.5 layer. LL Bean carries Tall sized 900 fill down coats and sweaters with Pertex shells.

I agree, the DWR has a short half-life in the PNW. But I think it's a matter of the amount of time it rains here, most jackets are not ready to stands up to an all day rain, let alone multiple days of rain with foggy or drippy slack times. That said OV, Patagonia, and a couple others do pretty well with some care and DWR refresh. I'm still wearing a 3-layer GoreTex climbing shell from the 1980s that surprisingly handles whatever weather is thrown at it. As for TALL sizes, LL Bean does well, so does Eddie Bauer, Columbia, and REI, but there is a limited model selection in all of these and they seem to sell out very quickly.

I love how excited you get about pit zips. I’m exactly the same way!

I seriously don’t know why every jacket has doesn’t have pit zips. Seems crazy to me.

Excellent review! I’ve had several rain jackets and all of them worked well for about a year, and then would wet out more and more frequently. I’ll have to try an Outdoors Vitals next time. Thanks for the tip!

Hard disagree on the LoftTek Jacket. I made a review of it but the insulation has shifted on my jacket. It has weird sizing and unusable features like the painful thumbholes. I believe OV has discontinued it. I think they have focused more on the Vario for a lightweight synthetic jacket.

Mine is still in wonderful condition. But yes, their gear has gone up in quality drastically over the years. They make some of the top quality gear out of all the cottage companies I’ve tried imo.
