What is a Pegboard?
Using a 1/4 inch masonite board with either 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch holes; these boards can be found at most home centers. Tom shows it can be as easy as mounting it up on an open stud bay.
This will give the space needed to put peg hooks in without hitting the wall. If no open stud bay is available, mount scrap wood on top of existing studs to make room for the hooks. Tom shows how the finished product can help keep your workspace clean and organized.

Steps:
Tommy is using a masonite pegboard, this is the most common and cost-effective board.
1. The easiest way to put up a pegboard wall organizer is to find an open stud bay and mount the pegboard up on the studs.
2. If the desired area is a wall, mount scrap wood onto the wall to give the hooks the needed space behind the pegboard. Make sure to mount the scrap wood where there is support, over existing studs.
3. Apply hooks and/or other pegboard accessories to hang up your tools.
Where to find it?
The pegboard Tom hung up was 2x4’ Heavy Duty Brown Pegboard Wall Organizer [bit.ly/35dCzvp], which is manufactured by Triton Products [www.tritonprodu...]. They can be secured to any stud using wall screws, which can be found at any home center.
The hooks Tom used to hang the tools came in a pegboard kit. The kit is 1/4” Zinc Plated Steel Pegboard Organizer Assortment Kit (43-piece) [thd.co/35hidS4], which is manufactured by Everbilt, which can be found at The Home Depot [www.homedepot....].

I glue 1 inch rigid foam board to the back of the pegboard with a construction adhesive. It fills the space behind the pegboard to prevent spiders from making it a home. It adds rigidity to the pegboard and holds the hangers tight so they don't fall out. The foam board also adds an additional layer of insulation. I use quarter inch self taping lag screws at the corners and at the top and bottom where it crosses every stud. It is very secure and doesn't sag.
How much glue do you need to put on the back of the pegboard? Is the rigid foam board cut to the same size as the pegboard?
Setting up my own work shop and about to put up my first peg board. Your comment was the ingenious idea I was searching for. THANK YOU! Your time spent writting the comment wasnt wasted and highly appreciated.
Thank you, great comment .. Cheers!
Dude, thank you. I'm going to use your idea.
Me 3...or 4...or whatever, I'm doing it too.
Tom has a wonderful, calming vibe. I could listen to him for hours and I don't even have a pegboard.
Imagine if you did though
He is hot I agree.
The gap... I would've totally overlooked that part. Thank you!
I remember watching this series on PBS. Nice seeing this OG!
Great video. Thanks for showing the different types of hooks and holders available. Thanks!!
You guys should do a review of the various pegboard materials including metal and the proprietary types of hooks, holes/slats etc.
Man, this video made me miss my Dad.
Hot glue works to hold the pegs in also.
The best part about installing pegboard is the hard pegging that follows.
Jesus Christ would be ashamed
Jesus Christ would be delighted
@@dontgetsalt2045 for what?peg bord😂😂

Ouch lol. I came here for the comments, and have not been disappointed.
THIS OLD HOUSE! I USED TO WATCH THE ORIGINAL SHOW OFF THE BUNNY EARS BACK WHEN IT WAS ON!
I want him to tell me Buttercup and Wesley live happily ever after in their own diy house
how about doing a demo on pegboard closet, lots of wall space that can be organized.
Woooooooo thanks for the idea
Why does this video make me so happy that I cant wipe the grin of my face
I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT EMOTIONAL DURING THE HANGING MONTAGE
You should spacers so all the holes can be used.
Thank you
Do you have a link or guidance on how to build a simple stud bay like that? Would prefer that over drilling into my rental apartment. Would be a huge help - Thanks!
You ever figure it out?
If you haven't found one and still interested, i was able to find something similar. Its a freestanding pegboard DIY

Thanks guys 🤙
Idk why anyone isnt saying it. But a simple washer underneath the screws is paramount to your pegboard lasting a lot longer.
Cool! Thank you!
Almost took my finger off with a hanging chisel, be careful hanging extra sharp tools 👍
@Rich Moore smart and sounds like it looks nice too. To make them snug are they partially sewed? How do they fit on?
1:38 and suddenly that hook grew bigger.
Very convenient
Love it thank you!!
Super Inefficient use of space there but I appreciate the good tutorial. 👍
Looks like some RUclips “Maker’s” tool collection.

Someone help how do I built the thing they screws the peg board on to?
It's not clear how thick the ripped 2x4 is to stand the pegboard off the wall. It looks thinner than the 1 and 3/4" thickness of a 2x4.
He was using 3/4 inch....
3/4 in is the standard. Very common to pick up at Home Depot etc. For three quarter inch by 1 and 1/2 by 8 ft. That's the exact length of the pegboard.
Rule of thumb. You need half of an inch clearance between the pegboard and the wall.
I can't find 1/8" masonite pegboad ANYWHERE.
First lobstah.
Where can I find the little clip that holds the pins in? I’ve looked and no luck
Metal coat hangers (I made my own). But good luck finding those too.
Amazon
Use paper clips
I want to use 1/4” tempered Masonite pegboard with 1/4 inch 3 holes. I can’t seem to locate any. Any ideas where to find it. The other peg boards are not strong enough for the weight I like to put on it.
Also, I have seen packs of spacers and self tapping screws for spacing the Masonite away from the wall. How well do those work in place of wood shims?
which side of pegboard faces out?
Either one. If you go for brown, might as well go with plain brown pegboard. Cheaper than the painted stuff.
Y'all can keep those hooks that need the plastic keepers, that's BS. Give me the ones that have 2 inserts per hook any day that's the only way to go in my opinion.
1st off this was lazy.. 2 screws in an OBVIOUS install situation and over half the video was putting up pegboard accessories which isn't the part people would have questions on..
1. People say 'DONT use the pegboard holes to screw the board to the strips'... But you did, whats the risk?
2. What's the difference between a horizontal install vs vertical? Both strips and pegboard..
3. What needs pre-drilling? Paranoid the strips will just split and blow out because it's cheap wood.
4. Also, how to deal with metal studs? Is it the same load bearing with a normal wood screw? or do you need to exclusively use wall anchors?
5. no mention of how many screws per pegboard length/height and the load bearing expectation?? 1 screw in each corner seems like way too few.. at least for anything not sized tiny.
6. Lastly, no one EVER mentions tips on how to do this kind of stuff solo; like a full sheet of pegboard is heavy.. how would i hold that up, level it, and get screws to drill in a corner by myself? What do people do to prop stuff up?
You made a very rational point with questions that would help an uncertain individual needing advice installing a pegboard.
We miss Bob Vila.
If that makes you feel better,my garage organization would straight up give you a disorder.
If you can't install a peg board you probably should just sell the tools you were planning to hang.
Hahahahahaha
But I need to hang my kitchen utensils, so I have to learn how to do it.
I just bought a house from someone who apparently decided to install the board directly onto the wall.... He even took out a small piece of drywall to make room for some of the hooks up top. I very much agree with your statement.
@@Jeauxnir .....🤔🤦♂️
Single mom to three, my oldest autistic son would love a peg board to display his nerf guns. But I have zero knowledge about this and unfortunately dad or uncles have all passed away. What a great example of the naive white male American perspective you’ve provided in this comment. Feeling thankful that the makers of this video were able to see the possible benefits of taping, editing, and posting their work.
Guess they're running out of things to show on TV.
Don’t judge. I am greatful for this video. I am 57 widowed can’t afford to pay someone can’t afford mistakes. I wouldn’t have known to put distance if on a closed wall to hang hooks. I also wouldn’t have known holes different sizes also wouldn’t have known about the things to hold hooks against the board. So you may be bored with the video but I am greatful for it
I hate pegbord.
This has to be the most worthless video you guys have produced to date. No mention of how much backing material should be used for the size of pegboard you are hanging, no mention of what screws to use to attach the backing material to the drywall, no mention of what screws to use to mount the pegboard to the backing material, no mention of how to space out the screws and how many should be used.
You're going to need to apply a little common sense here. The answer is, it depends on your application. 😢
What a joke! If anyone has a doorway with nothing behind it this will work great.
All you do it put wood behind the pegboard spaced out and then mount it. Not complicated
Bruh this literally the real home improvement show
Aruuuugh?
Not to be a downer, but this video was more of a "why peg boards are great" rather than a "how to". You guys installed it assuming that no one's putting the peg board over drywall, or a flat surface. Kind of a waste really...
The furring strip should be screwed in over drywall but not supported with anchors. Needs to be installed over studs. In US standard, you can find studs every 16" on-center and/or parallel to the vertical sides of windows and doors.
I don't think you were paying enough attention, MrShithead.
