I agree, Bandai took a step in the right direction when they eventually ditched the use of pre-molded inner frame save for small/minor parts. The RG line is becoming like a mini-MG of some sort, but with its own distinct flavor

The RG line always interest me, great engineering and sometimes surpasses the MG but I can’t get myself into it cause of their smaller scale and I find the 1/100 ones the right amount of shelf presence. Though the 1/144 ones saves space.

I own a couple of MG. And I just can't get into em. They feel too big and stiff in my hands, rather uncomfortable. It was a godsend for me when they announced the RG line. To date, I own around 25 HG, 12 RG, and only 3 MG in my 13-year gunpla building hobby.

Tallgeese- one of the best, the verniers are more solid than the mg

Destiny- another going on poses okay but assesories like to fall off

  • @Smilomaniac
    @Smilomaniac 2 года назад +4

My factually and objectively best top 10 - (I'm putting them in terms of how well I think Bandai succeeded in making these kits and what they mean for the line):
    10. Gundam Mk II - A.E.U.G. This is the only Gundam I want in PG. I love this design to bits.
The MS joint frame is a crap shoot. Maybe yours is good, maybe it's not. Mine is somewhere in between.
Otherwise it's pretty damn solid and a huge step up from RG #1 in my opinion. Everything works well and the tolerances are good. The vinyl tubing looks great (use a lighter to singe the ends) and it shows how fast Bandai progressed with RG's.
    9. Crossbone Gundam
Everything about this kit is awesome if you look at it like a kid would. It's the same with the AGE kits, you need to revert to what your 12 year old self would think about it. The plastic cape is awesome and they've stuffed a lot of gimmicks into the tiniest of Gundam's (at least of RG's).
My issue with it is that the core fighter is a bit hard to fit into the mobile suit, meaning the tolerances could've been better.
    8. Unicorn Gundam/Banshee/FA
It's impressive in that it transforms and does it well. Personally, I think the white (and blue for the Banshee) plastics look cheap and while it's impressive that it can transform, there are some loose parts (needed to glue the inner thigh plates) and it'll inevitably end up looking not-quite-transformed because it doesn't keep everything set. It also uses a lot of MS joints through its frame. The boosters on the FA version fall out a lot and it's just a tad too heavy with a lot of loss risks. Needs stickers to break up all the white.
These are great kits, but I can't help but feel that Bandai could've done this better.
    7. Tallgeese
Personally my favourite RG kit. Solid as a rock, superb expressive poses, well balanced and probably has the best rifle out of all of gunpla. The white plastic, however, is a tad brittle (breaking hazard) and the verniers are fiddly.
This is where RG was reborn and went from something interesting to something fantastic. They gave up on the MS inner frame and instead finally allowed themselves to make the best 144th scale kits they could. If I can get the TV version, I'll buy that, because it's the perfect excuse to make this kit again. I recommend all of these kits, but especially this one.
    6. Wing Gundam
The redesign of the original TV version is, in my opinion, a succesful upgrade that makes it look like the WING Gundam it was meant to be (and in my opinion far better looking than the Wing Gundam EW).
The way the wings spread looks absolutely amazing and while the flight modes are still lame, they at least look good. A few flaws with the extremely tight fit for the shell parts of the head and the green lens needing to be glued in.
    5. Nu Gundam
It has some balance issues due to the weight and attached fin funnels, but it poses like a champ otherwise and looks amazing. However, some dislike the design differences between this, the Katoki kit and the original design. It also has less surface detail in some parts than the Ver.Ka which some might consider an unfair criticism.
I think the kit raises questions and it puts this below others. One of my all time favourite Gundam designs is the F91, so if an RG is made and it looks significantly different, then I'll be annoyed.
    4. Sazabi is probably *the* most popular RG kit.
It looks good, it works well and it doesn't flop around despite its size. I will remind people though, that this is not easy to pose and/or balance as everything gets in the way of itself due to how bulky everything is. Additionally the shield connection could have been more solid. There are also the shoulders which are a break risk.
    3. Hi-Nu Gundam.
I don't have it. I've looked at all the reviews I can find and it looks as solid as an RG gets. If the tolerances are better than the Nu/Sazabi, then this is where it belongs. My main argument that this will be "better", is that the balance looks good and that it looks like they've learned from previous kits, even the best ones.
The reason it will never be the top kit is the injection molded silver and gold, which are pathetic and ugly. Every toy maker on the planet knows this is a terrible plastic and that it goes bad due to the inconsistency of how it mixes. If I need to paint in order to fix a mistake, then I consider that a big minus and a regression of model kit making.
    2. People will disagree, but they are wrong: Force Impulse Gundam.
You need to understand that I detest this Gundam. I hate the pilot (Shinn is even worse than Kira), I don't like how it looks with its baby blue parts, I hate the 3 piece in-air assembly, I am absolutely furious about the way the core fighter drops its missile pods every time it transforms, I don't like that there's a separate transport jet and the white cap on the beam rifle scope looks stupid.
Why isn't this red instead of the melee version, to match the wings? Why does the shield extend and reveal it's thinner internals? Why is there a flap which only purpose is to hide the face in the split-apart-flying mode?
As much as I dislike nearly everything about it, it is a flawless kit. There is nothing wrong with this kit what so ever, in fact the tolerances are superb.
I think it's a step up from Sazabi and Nu in how well everything fits together and the fact that they've managed to fit a core fighter between the waist and chest and have the whole thing be absolutely rock solid.
This kit is mindblowingly good and for anyone who thinks the Sazabi or Nu deserves to be above this, you need to understand that while those are great kits I have my criticisms about them, but I can't fault this kit on anything and I doubt Bandai could've made this kit better in any way. This is the new quality standard and if Bandai continues to make their RG's as good as this one, then Real Grade is indisputably the BEST grade of them all.
    1. In my opinion, the best sucess of the RG line is the Zeong.
It's an ambitious kit done right the whole way through. I don't think a lot of people like the way it looks, it's definitely odd and the antlers especially are so damn ugly, but Bandai have managed to make a "real" Zeong that makes sense in how it looks and the surface detail is so good throughout the whole of this kit.
The posability/articulation of the kit is superb and while it needs its stand due to the nature of how it works, Bandai have given it the mechanics it needs to throw this thing into full body poses that make this the most expressive of all the RG kits.
It's not flawless, the MS joint fingers can be weak/come apart and the hatches are fiddly, but I'm judging these by what I think they set out to do and how well they succeeded.
While I think the Force Impulse is flawless it is also a relatively simple kit. You don't get to be the best by playing it safe, you become the best by pushing the entire line forwards and this is the best of what we've seen engineering wise from Bandai. It's so good, in fact, that I don't think we'll see a better RG than this for a decade.
    Nr. 0: RX-78-2.
The first and "worst" RG kit.
Do not buy this unless you want an overdesigned and overambitious fiddly kit with poor tolerances that drops parts. You will need to glue parts, the frame is a sloppy mess, you do NOT want to drop this thing and you'll need to glue the stickers back on five minutes after you've placed them.
But man does this thing look amazing... Bandai did this for the 30th anniversary of gundam/gunpla and they started what is in my opinion, the single best line of model kits. Any experienced model kit builder should get this to understand what RG is about, what it came from and what it has ended up becoming with the last dozen or so kits.
Other kits to be wary of:
The Zeta Gundam - Complicated transformation, weak inner frame, do not expect to handle it more than a handful of times.
A handful of youtubers have now claimed that this kit is not a "hand grenade", but not a single one of them has dropped one in front of a camera. ZakuAurelius excuses the kit as "it's not a toy", but conveniently neglects to hold the kit to the standards of other RG's. Make no mistake about it, this is a weak feeling kit that will make you feel uncomfortable to handle. Get it for the impressive engineering and a good looking kit, but only for the sake of really being into the hobby, otherwise save your money and avoid.
The Sinanju - Very mixed complaints and an infamous kit. A loose waist, brittle parts, poor tolerances, heavy for its MS inner frame, comes apart in places, drops parts (skirts/knees) and it comes in a cheap tupperware red that makes it look at home with your kitchen appliances.
    Avoid.
The Full Burnern - Midsection comes apart to fit the core fighter, very hard to pose without taking them apart, knee caps pop off easily. I'd imagine the Zephyrantes can have similar issues despite GN's opinion. It's not a bad kit, but it's not up to par with other RG kits, not even early ones. I'll recommend a Zaku II a dozen times over before getting this.
I will say though, despite the MS joint frame, mine is entirely solid.

    • @vernondelacruz7812
      @vernondelacruz7812 2 года назад

I had built the Zephyrantes and it is quit good. The problem where the chest, the core fighter and the legs would seperate easily doesn't apply to my copy, my guess is that people don't put it in properly. I had mine for over a year now and I still have not encountered that problem. I would say that Gp01 is just under the MkII when comes to articulation and stability. Zephyrantes and MkII are the 2 rg that i touch the most unlike the rg unicorn.

      Helpful mini reviews. 👍
I'd definitely recommend the PG MkII. It's, big, bulky, and solid, with tons of hatches and inner detail.
It's a little dated, and the required screws can be a bit daunting for some (make sure you screw them in very tightly to secure the joints properly), but it's the best of the older PGs IMO.
I customised mine with parts from an Abrams tank, and painted it "desert sand" with tons of weathering. 😆

    • @Smilomaniac
      @Smilomaniac Год назад

@@drewlovelyhell4892 Since then I finally got the PG Mk-II and I love it, loose joints and all (I've tightened them as much as I dare). It's definitely a kit you feel you've earned once it's done.
Having built the PG Unleashed, I actually love the Mk-II even more. The PGU is too smooth of a build, it's a little too effortless and I got the same feeling with the MGEX Strike Freedom. Fantastic kits and marvels of engineering and design, but they're a little too easy, if that makes sense.
They really helped me appreciate how much love went into the Mk-II's design, the highly detailed inner frame, the over-the-top and completely unnescessary ankle suspension, the chromed out cockpit to reflect the internal light, the extremely overcomplicated gold chains, the strange choice to make a pre-mold eye lens, the luxury manuals and metallic box... You can feel the enthusiasm that went into making it from the complicated build.
I'm just waiting for proper decals, the stickers are a bit sad (as are the PGU ones...)

@@Smilomaniac I couldn't agree with you more, about both the MkII and the PG Unleashed.
Regarding the latter, it was sublime, but arguably too simple. All the layering is great, but it doesn't have all that much going on beneath the armour. It's somewhat superficial.
But I had a great time building up the MKII. It felt like assembling a real machine.

Wanna ask how long have you own the GP01? I really love the design, probably one of my fav, but too scared to get it since reading a lot of negative reviews

I built it and it is actually good. There is something left out of the manual about attaching the core fighter to the top. There is a little hinge that drops down the blue part just a little bit that makes it tons more stable

I hate the RX-78-2 so much, it's a handgrenade with the stupid sideskirts falling all the time. I'm not even joking, it made me hate the whole kit.

You have MG for that. I think being 1/144 is what makes them special. They’re so detailed while being so small, just makes them look and feel unlike anything else. I felt the same way at first but they’ve really grown on me.
