    I agree with the suggestions Kane isn't fully fit, but what confuses me about that is when I see him sprinting back to the edge of his own box, he looks fine. It's when there's an attack on he looks sluggish and leggy, is it that he's expending all his energy in the wrong moments? RE: Pickford's bottle, in case of a vital shoot-out in the semi-final or final, I think he should put the opposite on the bottle - if for a player he needs to dive left, the bottle should say dive right, but he knows he's doing the opposite of the bottle. He should then leave the bottle right there for the opposition to see. The widespread coverage of it will have opponents taking notice of the bottle 100%.

    I'm starting to wonder if everyone has been told to reel in the criticism a bit. To be completely honest I really didn't see too much to jump up and down about for the first 80 minutes apart from some great endeavour shown by Saka .... It was incredibly obvious we had lost control of the game 10 minutes before the Swiss scored, and the time for change was at that point. To now be saying what great changes X 3 were made when we were again desperately chasing the game is comical. Great strike by Saka ... (MOM by far) to level things up. Good pens but please let's not say we prepare any better than any of the other 'big' teams for these occasions. Let's hope we can play well against a pretty average Dutch side and grab a spot in another final.... c'mon England.

      It's partially to cover themselves in case England do win it, but also with the reaction from Southgate and Kane - they don't want to make another slightly out of context headline that will used by other journalists to make it seem like they have agendas following the previous comments.
      It's a good podcast, but unfortunately they can't be as honest as the likes of RUclipsrs and talksport accepted sensationalism.
      Having said all that, their praise did have some truth to it. The system did work better, but the quality in the final third just wasn't quite there again other than Saka. For me, either Kane needs to be replaced or Bellingham needs to make more forwards runs and stay higher to offer another body in the box and an outlet in the counter attacks.

    My take on Southgate is he just isn't brave enough, front footed enough in terms of philosophy or adjustments. He's steadfastly loyal to players in a manner that holds England back and in spite of both those traits he's our most successful England manager in 60 years.
    The simplest critique of the players is how few chances we create. Saka finally cuts in and lets it fly and he scores. We need more efforts on goal. Engineering the perfect opportunity within 6 yards is a fool's errand. If we aren't going to play people that threaten the counter or run behind then there has to be a green light shoot on sight within 20 yards of goal. If you never shoot, you never score.

    • @seanypthemc
      @seanypthemc 2 месяца назад

      Also worth noting that Saka only scores because Rice makes a sacrificial / decoy run that creates the space to cut in. Rice would NEVER have made that run if we were drawing or winning. The low risk philosophy means we create next to nothing.

    • @matthewdobson100
      @matthewdobson100 2 месяца назад

      Saka was able to make that inside move and shot, which is classic Saka and his key threat (he's not actually great crossing off his weaker right foot) because he got the ball in the right area high up on the edge of the box with a player over/underlappinng him (Rice in this case) to take a defender away and create the space. This is what he gets when he plays for Arsenal and they control possession (allowing that run from midfield/fullback). He hasn't had it for England enough this tournament and so actually he's been going outside of his markers a lot more from deeper positions or when receiving more direct passes, making him commit defenders earlier.

    Wdym don't wanna take off Foden? He's been pretty bad but tbf none of the frontline have got the ball much. Foden for Gordon and then you have Saka destroying the right wing and Gordon at least making a threat down the left. That would encourage Kane to stay in the middle and get to crosses or if not take him off and play Toney or Watkins... Personally thought Watkins should have come on for 3 of the group stages games, should be used more for pace late in the game, pushing the backline to make space for the likes of Bellinghams late runs and Foden's 10 positions.

      Tbh Saka did a great job at beating his man... but it was only that 1 ball that found the space in the box or the cross bearing the first defender. We are missing the glaring truth that Foden and Bellingham need to run past him and fill the box. That's what Son, that's what Sane etc. We are creating very very little and I can see Kane as the easy fall guy, but it's missing the point imho

    • @nb9797
      @nb9797 3 месяца назад

      @@mickbanner we can't just say "we can't drop Kane" like Watkins / Toney are suddenly incapable of finishing 10 yards out. And we can't not use our squad and keep players fresh, hungry and competitive like Pep does at City. If we want a Club ethos at England level, we need to play the players that suit that position / opposition and if we're not playing with Sane and Gnabry as out and out wingers, then we can't have false 9 Kane. We need to play the right player for the opposition and TRUST them. And when Kane gets his chance, he won't dare to play like he just did.

    I'm not surprised they came in for criticism after their half time response to England. It was way over the top. One of them said "and Switzerland haven't even had a shot on goal" when England hadn't had a shot on goal either and didn't have one until we scored

    Alan went PRIME Peter Drury with the tyres bar. Don't want to ever hear Saka LB shout or dropped from these huge ex players. Look at the stats, England player of the year twice, most goals for England last 2 MAJOR COMPS, put his nation on his back in a quarter final, 4/4 take ons, most tackles, only goal in 120mins, most chances created. INSANE STATS He's been 1 of England best players for 4 years yet ppl purposely ignored that. Yet "Build the team around Foden" is having an AWFUL tournament again and the media aren't talking about this

    I think what you guys said about Rice is absolutely spot on, and it reminds me also of how people spoke about Busquets. As in, if you just casually watch the game you don't think they did much, but if you just watch the player you realise how actually they are more or less central to everything. Rice isn't quite there yet, but it's relly surprisingly how sumilarlythe two play

      Anyone who has this opinion should be locked up for life!
      Busquets is one of the greatest to ever do it and he’s being compared with Rice who’s the complete opposite of him as a player.
      Rice is mobile all energy and can run box to box to score goals but Busquets was a genius who let his brain and the ball do the work

    • @matthewdobson100
      @matthewdobson100 2 месяца назад

      Mainoo, Foden and Saka on that right side look really promising, Mainoo and Foden always looking for the ball and to keep it moving.
      Bellingham, Rice and Gordon (but more likely Shaw) could work really well on the left too.
      At this point though Kane is the serious weak link.
      I'd rather see Bellingham through the middle. He either needs to play deeper or at the point of the attack, he's not a 10 really, it's not what he does at Real.
      I'd seriously consider putting him through the middle like at Real with Gordon and Saka giving the width left and right, Mainoo and Foden in behind. Either in a 4-1-4-1with our 'normal' back 4 (Shaw, Guehi/konsa, Stones, Walker) and Rice in front, or my prefered option 3-4-2-1/3-2-4-1 with Wharton alongside Rice, back 3 of Guehi, Stones, Konsa.

    With so much talk about HK being slightly off pace, would be great to see Gareth try something different like starting with Ollie or Ivan for the first 50 mins then bringing H on, he would be fresher and sharper for the remainder of the game and hopefully either of the other two by then would've either been successful in scoring or have worn their defenders down as they have much higher energy levels, H still offers so much in terms of reliability in front of goal and simply cannot be overlooked, but in taking this approach could somewhat support H to be just as effective whilst other options would've been given a chance and England seen as being more proactive with their tactics..just a thought..?

      It would help if Foden and Bellingham run past and play false 9s. Dropping deep does so much to mess with their backline, but aiming at Kane is missing what the multiple Golden boot winner is doing. Pinning this on Kane is missing the point

    16:00 Kane dropping in to be one of the 10s when one of the wide CBs is in the ball is perfect in this system…the 10 then needs to run beyond…the interchange of movement of the 10 and 9, combined with an “up-back-through” passing pattern (CB to 9 to 6/WB and then into space for 10 to run on to) will unlock many defences. That is one part missing from this system

  • @charliemilroy6497

    It seemed clear to everyone that changes needed to be made and Switzerland were likely going to score. It's difficult to imagine Southgate proactively making changes. Southgate might snatch a result, but the margins are that much tighter against the very best teams that the Southgate handicap most probably will cost us like it did against Italy.

    • @nutyyyy
      @nutyyyy 2 месяца назад +3

      Absolutely, against Spain, or even France and the Netherlands those margins will be much finer. If England go down by two goals or even need to score two I can't see them doing it.

  • @informedchoice2249
    @informedchoice2249 2 месяца назад +2

    I still wonder about Foden. For me, he's done nothing of note in an attacking sense. Yes he's jogged into space and played some passes and kept the ball moving but by no means would I describe his performances as world class. Think about what Gazza did compared to Foden, he's a passenger by comparison. Get at them. Take a man on. At the edge of the 18 yard box in the centre, run for the gap. I've also noticed the total lack of quick balls into Kane between the defenders. Little dinks into the box, passes on the ground where he can take it to feet. That creates chances. It's Kane's bread and butter. Kane was great defensively and generally good but you have to service him. Something for him to do a 2 yard dart run onto and shoot. That requires the wingers to be awake, and not obsessed with rote play.
