Ok… this was far more enjoyable than I thought 😂 I’m such a noob though! Anyone got any tips?? Going to be uploading much more of the metal detecting content over on my other channel Life of Mike: www.youtube.com/@LifeofMikeOfficial
Jacks says, "You're digging, Dad, so I'm going to dig too!" He's adorable. I would love to try metal detecting. As you said, it looks like so much fun!
I remember when you first purchased your land and recommended detecting it to see what's lurking beneath the soil, its a great way to getting to know the history of your land. You'll soon know what your finds are before you dig it from the readings and sounds. Love it.
You don’t have to justify why you’re metal detecting! I think it’s fun to watch, and you clearly enjoy it, so do it as often as you like on this channel. I hope you find your Saxon horde!!🤗❤️🐝
It may not be bush craft, but it is woodland management. You are picking up other people's trash, and in the process you may, just may, find something of value or an antiquity. That's what makes it fun. Thanks for the video. Jon
Nice to have your own woods to detect in. I would suggest you watch some channels on here by experienced detectorists and you'll learn loads. For starters, learn to swing the detector in a wide arc without lifting the coil off the ground, by moving your hips - edge forward overlapping your swings - that way you can cover the ground really well. All of the targets you dug were quite shallow, so check to see if you have some deeper settings you can use as the good stuff will be several inches down. I don't use that detector so I can't give you specific advice on that. Happy hunting!
It’s funny that you posted this today. I’m actually going to look at a metal detector. I’m in the southwest desert of Arizona where there is supposed to be gold all around the area.
Dig everything! That lead with the numbers is interesting. A close up would help you get a better ID. When your metal detecting, don't be afraid to chase the nails and rubbish. You will never learn more about your plot of land than when you metal detect it. If you keep a journal or map of your finds, later when you have amassed a lot of finds you can start to see the lay of the land. Where the foot paths were and structures.
Good for you, Mike! Once you perfect your technique you’ll get more efficient and find more treasures. If you sweep smoothly about an inch from the ground side to side - about 4.5 feet wide just in front of you and don’t step ahead until you’ve swept back and forth at least once you will miss less and find more efficiently. Also yes, get yourself a good small shovel to dig the one to two inch deep treasures. You don’t want to ruin your pinpointer by scratching and digging with it too much. Use your big shovel to dig deeper than two inches and put what you dig on the side of the hole. Then use your detector to scan what you’ve removed from the hole and also scan the hole again. Then you can use your pinpointer to search the mud from the hole or if there is still no signal there but there is a signal in the hole then use your pin pointer in the hole. If you don’t scan both the mud dug out and the hole each time after you’ve dug , you may miss a second treasure that is deeper or beside the first treasure in same hole. In an ancient country like yours I would dig EVERY signal because you can find especially in a woodland where there hasn’t been ploughing that chews up or buries treasures deeper into the earth. Good luck, Mike! This will be fun to watch!
Love it , Mike !!! I was looking for a New Hobby ! Greetings from a thankfull old retiree in Fife, Scotland ! Gotta do it on the Firth of Forth beach nearby !
Very cool! But please remember to report any archaeological find to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. It helps archaeologists in evaluating the historical landscape and possibly at finding important archaeological sites.
I remember on a Christmas day sometime in the late 90's, my brother excitedly taking his new metal detector out into the garden to see what he could find. Within minutes he found a signal under the lawn, and with dad's help and permission we lifted the turf off to see what was hiding there... It turned out to be the skeleton of a cat, still wearing it's collar... 😂 Presumably a much loved pet from a previous owner of the house. Er... HAPPY HUNTING! lol
Really enjoyed watching this! You have a lot of bushcraft videos and like someone else said, your channels is TA outdoors and for as long as you’re outdoors and showing us your woodland, we will watch 💪 I’d love more metal detecting!
One of the first "toys" I treaded myself for our woodland was a metal detector. Has been invaluable for finding wayward arrows when we do archery (or the time I lost my keys while mowing the meadow)
The thrill of the hunt. I keep finding old 12bore cartridge tops in our wood too! (Brass?) But also a piece of bronze - so keep at it 👍try paths & around big trees. Aluminium pings high but at least we're getting rid of the rubbish!
Sometimes I watch your channel just because I NEVER know what you're going to be up to next! It's wonderful to see someone so interested in doing a broad range of things. The common thread is Your Woodland! Thanks for sharing, and I'm subscribed to Life of Mike! (as well as this channel of course, for ages now)
Love watching your channel and your dad's channel, I just came across this one of you meatal detecting, I've been metal detecting many years and would love to see you doing more of this to see what you uncover, great stuff 😀 👍
Reckon it must the chase, like fishing, hunting or photography even, that stirs our ancestoral desires to discover! Been wanting to give this a go for years!!
I enjoyed this very much. Your delight at each find and overall is infectious. I will watch anything you put out...big fan I am! Look forward to your next adventure.
Great video, I watch many types, Locks, Lock Picking, Bush-craft, metal detecting, Magnet fishing, sailing, ...Etc. Have a greet day, also I saw a big RUclips metal detector change his mind about ignoring crap metal pings, he decided to dig a big hit and found good stuff underneath. you never know, till you look!
my only suggestion is swinging the coil evenly across the ground left and right because the coil needs to be moving to really get the signals well. awesome to see ya join the hobby! love your videos! good luck!
Great new outdoor adventure! This is a great way to learn more about the history of the land you're on, too. Here in New England, we have a lot of history out in the woods that has been forgotten, which is something we like to show in our channel when we can. Like the random miles of stone walls all over New England woodlands, which we covered in one of our videos. The history of the land is just fascinating to me.
Haha fab that Mike, Charlie watches stuff like this so I'm sure he'll be tuning in to Life Of Mike too! Really enjoyed that and can imagine the buzz you get from it. Just think what could be under our feet, as you say Viking or Saxon treasure 😳. Thanks pal 👍
Hi Mike, lay some objects on the ground at home (run the detector over the ground first to make sure there's no trash in the ground), space the objects apart and swing the detector over each object to see what reading you get, try using the detector with headphones and you will learn to detect using the tones rather than relying on the display. If you lay out a gold ring, silver coin, a piece of copper, Zinc, Iron and an Aluminium ring pull and notice the different tones and display numbers it will help you learn the machine. Good Hunting
You're finding stuff that was dropped many decades ago and would never have been seen again had you not looked for them. Someone might have shot their supper with one of those shotgun shells. Detecting is one of my main hobbies and it is never boring.
I got my first metal detector last fall. I know exactly what you mean about the hunting feel. I'm exploring the woods around my place and as I walk out in the dark I feel the same as if I had been deer hunting all day. Catch myself being conscious of where the 'muzzle' of my MD is pointing and already looking forward to the next time.
The bunker renovation wasn't bushcraft either and we loved that too. Just keep doing what you do Mike. We came for the bushcraft and stayed for the detecting 🙂
Great detector to start getting used to. LP a great company that will provide you with great advice. You will find a number of shotgun cartridges in your woodland, but keep going, get used the the sounds and signal numbers, I bet you will find some nice finds there. Good Luck!
The hand held pin-pointer sounds like a fishing bite alarm, had to turn the volume down as it sounds exactly like my mates alarms in the next swim tonight! Great finds 👍, 😂😂😂😜😜🎣🐟
Really cool! I was into metal detecting about 10 years ago. I mostly just watched videos on YT didn't do too much of my own stuff. But It was still fun.
You might think it mundane, but the nail is extremely cool... remember most people have never seen nor herd of old style nails. (though this channel being the ways it is many of the audience will). I love the history on nails how important they where and are, how we have digressed in nail making in favor of cheaper mass produced nails (it's insane the amount of different types of nails there are, for all types of crafts, if one wants to pay the price or make their own).
👍👌👏 Shotgun cartridge caps can be made out of brass. So maybe you found something valuable. Anyway: Nothing you found belongs in the soil, so it's good that you removed the things. I absolutely love your cute little helper dog 💚. Best regards, luck and especially health to all of you.
Awesome, been following your channel for a while, great to see you detecting.. Woodland is hard as the tree roots make digging difficult, also lots of shotgun cases as you have found out 😊
With a place as rich in history as your woodland undoubtably is, that you may be able to find "ancient treasures" is not insignificant, although you may need a more powerful detector that can detect metal further down under the soil. That iron nail you found is likely very old, word of advice, track what you find and where you find it. I can't imagine an iron nail of that sort has been used locally for several hundred years, there may be more similar finds deeper than your detector can sense. Who knows, your woodland may be sitting on top of an Iron Age village...
Oh wow what a great idea....I live in a area that had many copper and gold mines...hum...maybe I should get one....thanks for the idea...hope you find treasure..
Great video Mike, your enjoying it, finding cool stuff and unwanted stuff from your woodland, you should consider having a chat with kris from addicted to bleeps, he ps a very approaches guys and full of knowledge on metal detecting , and is based in the south east. Do what makes you happy mate, we enjoy watching all your content.
Hi, nice to see you coming to this new hobby. Be careful this is very addictive. Hope someone will come along and guide you on how to use the machine and find your first coin, object… This is a good start to remove all trash from the ground. Looking forward to your next metal detecting video. Take care and again thank you for the great content. Pascal from Finland
Swing the detector left to right From your 9 o'clock to your 3 o'clock and low to the ground, one swing, one step! Watch a few videos and see how we do it, I have a few video of me detecting. hi, actually, as I've been exploring the woods, I've always been curious to find interesting things beneath the leaves & debris! Having a metal detector with me has been a goal for a while now. So, it's cool to watch u and see what u can find. Iron nails, bottons, belt buckles & military service metals are often found in early settlement areas, burried.
Hey Michael! What’s cool about it is who knows how old is shotgun shells are and how old that tin cap is! Much luck on your searches in your wonderful Woodlands!!!

You are beginning correctly. Can't learn to swim until you are in the water. It will be fun to watch your journey with the new hobby.
I hope You learned how to Ground Blance .
It won't work Right unless You Do.
Nice video! One tip though, you shouldnt wear a ring while using the pinpointer😅
you should do this every now and then, you'll miss a lot of area never know what you'll find (besides cans)
Get yourself a hand shovel so you don't have to dig with your hands
Jacks says, "You're digging, Dad, so I'm going to dig too!" He's adorable. I would love to try metal detecting. As you said, it looks like so much fun!
Every find is treasure to someone. Glad to see you enjoyed your first go at detecting, we hope you find it to be as addictive as we do.
I’m already addicted to it! Thanks for all the help 👍🏻
Upload it on either channel and I’ll watch!
He will be addicted now. Last week I found a bronze age socketed axe head. Put it on my tiktok channel and it's gone crazy. Love the hobby
