      To be fair, I think we all get that feeling. When you watched it with all the hype around citizencon and seeing so much progress after years of really slow progress, it really swept you up in the emotion, but when you watch it on its own without all that context it is a bit cringe lol.
      Similar thing with his joke about not giving a release date. In the community it's funny, as it plays off the fact he kept giving release dates for things which would make all the devs pull their hair out as they couldn't meet them, so he's clearly learned his lesson. But to people outside the community, it just looks like he's being facetious.

    I read a lot of sci-fi books and all the female officers are addressed as Sir. I think it's something to do with addressing the rank and not the person although I have been known to be wrong from time to time.

    I think people complaining about the weighty FPS combat come from much faster, unrealistic shooters like CoD, Apex, etc.
    You're not a super human in SC, you're a person, and as someone who comes from those games, it feels like controlling an actual, weighty person.
    i'm assuming it's also affected by using your same character model for first and third person. They can't fudge the animations for first or third without affecting the look for both.

    • @grimalkin8082
      @grimalkin8082 9 месяцев назад +1

      Maybe. The only problem with games that try to make controlling a human being feel 'real' is the fact that I'm still controlling them with a mouse and keyboard. Humans in real life have options. We can scramble and tumble and dash and do whatever it takes to get us through a bad situation. I think it's okay to make a character move a little more arcade-y to compensate for that.

      As someone who doesn't play any twitch FPS games, and the only real FPS game I've played recently is Stalker Gamma, which it is best for the player if they try and slow down their gameplay as much as possible, and be as slow and deliberate as possible - Honestly SQ42 FPs gameplay looks too fast. It's much faster than I'd expect more sim-like combat to be. But maybe that can be attributed to the full-body heavy armor in SQ42/SC, which supposedly at least partially blocks threats. In Stalker, if you're not full blown end-game armor 200+ hours into a playthrough, you're going to die very very fast to a lot of things in the zone if you don't approach fights with caution.

    Couple Points about Wing Commander 5 and Freelancer: 1. Wing Commander 5 was made after CR left Origin, so he had no hand in it's crappiness. 2. Microsoft bought CR's company during the development of Freelancer and literally Fired CR cuz it was taking him too long and finished the game. They finished without him, so of course it wasn't up to his vision.
    I think it's been a long time since we've seen a True CR vision from start to finish... so I'm actually getting kinda pumped to see how it turns out

    • @manicms
      @manicms 9 месяцев назад +2

      It's the same vision he's always had. Privateer was Star Citizen 0 but the tech was woefully limited. Freelancer the same, plus the issues you mentioned. This is the first time he really has free rein to go wild. I think he's only ever wanted to make one game his whole life (counting squadron + SC as one). Even Strike Commander was basically just mercenary life with atmospheric flight.

      What have they achieved? Let see...
      -A brand new engine built from the ground up
      -A studio of only a few dozen in beginning to over 1200 in 10+ years
      -A type of game that no one has built before, with no load screens and persistent online universe
      -New tech that would revolutionize the gaming industry, server meshing. Not "new" but never tried and done the way CIG has developed it.
      -No overlords breathing down their neck. Everything is crowdfunded. If it wasn't for us the people none of this would be possible
      These are a few and there are plenty more but when people said this was all a scam, they have proved people wrong. Without big publishers' game development is a lengthy process. The vision of Chris and what he wanted to create was bigger then what we even thought was possible. • @Tsudico
      @Tsudico 9 месяцев назад

      @@jingleman31 I think some items on your list don't reflect the actual reality of the game's history. Sure the studios were build from the ground up but the engine, while _very_ heavily modified, did start from a preexisting engine so we can't tell how much of the code from that engine remains. No loading screens wasn't part of the original pitch, the original pitch included instances and battle zones and so persistence wasn't going to be anywhere near the extent they are trying for now. Everything is crowdfunded except, like Mike mentioned, the influx of "marketing" cash from some investors years ago and we don't know the details of the deal to know how much sway those investors might have on the project. So far it appears that they are just interested in letting Chris achieve his dream but it could have been far worse.
      Chris' vision expanded as the crowdfunding grew. The game pitched in 2012 was majorly changed when seamless ground to space and planetary tech was decided to be added behind the scenes and it set the project back by years in order for them to determine how to achieve that with some semblance of the original pitch intact.
      Yes, the game that is being created _now_ is bigger than most people thought possible but there definitely were plenty of issues and delays due to changes that were poorly communicated to the backers who fund the project. I don't think that should be forgotten, because it has caused a lot of negative press (much of it deserved) over the years. Whether they could have had similar success if they were more open about their changing focus and the possible delays it would cause we will never know. It's possible the game wouldn't have reached this point.

    Though, I'm sure if we're in a scripted story/mission, that there will be "Hey, where are you going, come back" lines, and or flashing red screens that say "return to mission area' or "AWOL, Mission Failed".

    • @Tsudico
      @Tsudico 9 месяцев назад +1

      Given that Chris states that Squadron 42 is going to be this generation's Wing Commander, I don't think volunteer missions are going to be a thing. When the Wing Commander games were focused on military life, so unlike Privateer, they had a pretty linear sequence of missions. At least some of the Wing Commander military focused games made it feel less linear by having different paths through the game depending on how successful you were at completing the missions, but I think those were at the start of the series before Chris really got invested in narrative storytelling.

    • @Onikame
      @Onikame 9 месяцев назад

      @Tsudico yeah, I can see it going either way. I'd be happy for minimal, or no 'side quests' cause I'll do em all and take forever to get through the story. I could definitely see the missions being pretty sequential in order to facilitate narrative pace over giving people a bunch of side activities to do. Especially when SC is basically a giant side-quest. Lol

This is highly experimental and forward looking tech we’re talking about here. I don’t even look at this as a criticism of Bethesda. Dude at 10 minutes when you mention the use of vjoy with mouse...
    One thing that absolutely BLOWS MY MIND is that the bind for Toggle Relative/Vjoy is not assigned by default. It is the single beast thing to happen to aerial/space flight sims, or any type of game, in decades, AND IT'S NOT EVEN BOUND BY DEFAULT! I'd guess 99% of players don't even know about this!
    Under Flight - Movement is a bind called sometime like "toggle relative/vjoy mouse control." You can tap it to toggle, or what makes it really good, you can hold it to temporarily switch between whatever is active and the other mode until you let it go. I use this shit CONSTANTLY, and it's the first thing I tell literally every new player to bind before they do anything.
    I use a thumb most button for it.
    It makes combat with kb/m SO much better then default controls. When I hop in my ship, the first thing I do is tap it to toggle to Relative Mode. This is like traditional FPS controls. You're ship won't turn or pitch unless you move the mouse. This makes take off/landing 1000 times easier. It also makes precision aiming in combat much easier.
    Aiming at your target and he flies past you? Just hold that button to temporarily switch to Vjoy (aka Virtual Joystick, which is On by default), then you can drag the mouse and quickly, easily turn without having to lift and reposition your mouse several times to do a 180. Then just let it go, and you're back to Relative Mode, so you just aim like you would in any other FPS game.
    It's seriously a crime that they don't have this bound by default. I can't even play other flight games with mouse they don't have this option available.
    Of course, some form of joystick is the best!

    The weird thing about the focus targeting section is that they literally say it's for focusing on hardpoints on larger ships, yet they display it against a fast moving single seater, which it wasn't made for. This is why it looks so shit, it's because it is.

    The player can more than likely be controlled by the fact the player is a military pilot. You can't fly anywhere yourself. And the UEE gives you a mission where the only or a few safe paths are give to you. Because they are the only safe past, or you get 100 missile fired at you.
    Still they can do a fade out and sent back to your ship.. or you died screen. But I hope they give us 'real' restrictions. Like if you go away from mission you get marked as going rogue and will eventually be hunt down.

    I hear you about needing convincing that this is going to be a good game. That being said he has been responsible for what is considered good games of the past. I think Quin is right on here. The reason I get annoyed with all the hate is because we still don't know what the future holds, but the one thing I can say is that they haven't stopped delivering like other games. They didn't just put out garbage and were forced to live with it. They are working on something special. Or at least what I choose to believe is going to be something special. I could be wrong. More importantly I could be right. Game publishers put out garbage everyday. I need to hold out hope that someone is actually going to have a dream for a great game and make that dream come true. It's a golden opportunity for greatness and until I see them fail I choose to believe that it's going to happen.

    I'm semi-optimistically "holding the line". CIG is at a drastic point turning since its inception, they have surpassed the infant/new corporation status, and are now at the "make it or break it reality". They have survived the 3, five and 10 year mark. If they are able to deliver at least half of what was stated during citcon in the next 12 months, they may actually make it. If not, there are too many case studies to name that prove the break. My hope is, that the testing metrix employed for the overall development of the company will prove viable. My fingers are crossed they actually pull this off. If not another person/company/corporation will pick up where they left off in an almost seamless fashion. Raise a glass for what they have achieved, but take a shot for what the future holds..

    Indeed, Chris is known for pushing the envelop. The Wing Commander series provided so much new tech and experiences. Some of my best gaming memories growing up.
    You don't fully seem to appreciate the value of player-created content. Players are content. When I think back to my Wow days, some of the best content I played was player-created. Just the events that are planned or emerge when you have a group of players interacting.

    "writers are more important than actors" is very much consequential way of thinking. A piece of work only is as good as its' worst part, so is the team is only as good as its' worst player. A good movie can have mid script but fantastic performance, but if SQ42 aim to be the "BEST", it needs everything perfect.

    I want diversity and choice among the ships available and making a ship takes hundreds if not thousands of work hours, those hours need to be paid and the people buying concept ships are not only funding the game overall but my choice diversity of ships so I fucking love them.

    34:00 this is the worst take. Using keybinds to turn systems on and off is one of the things that makes SC feel immersive. Some SC players are using HOSAS + Gameglass + keyboard or button boxes to add more fidelity to pushing buttons. We as a community love good buttons.

    After watching his react video in the first place, i have to say i am baffled by how many people in his stream are just screaming scam, low fps, shit story. I do wonder what the average age on his viewers is. Granted, SQ42 and SC are not for everyone, it is a niche and in which also age may play a role! Wy bash something if you do not know what you are talking about? It seemed to me that many of them might have been reading titles off the internet and formed an opinion just based on that. What a tunneled vision some people have is just sad, truly sad. The herd spirit i saw in his chat is just sad. I would ask you guys, content creators to put out some polls to check the average age of the SC backer, it might be surprising to many. Other than that, keep it up Mike, i love your take on the project, a realistic approach which not many streamers adhere to.
