- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.4!
In this tutorial, we return to the subject of Bamboo - which is food for pandas, material for scaffolding, and a whole wood type of its own!
First, we look at where to find pandas, and their seven varieties with unique characteristics! We breed and feed them with bamboo (and cake!), and discuss how sneezing baby pandas can be a source of slime balls if you're patient.
Then we take a deeper look at Scaffolding, which some players find tricky to use, but once you've mastered it, it's a vital tool for navigating builds, measuring distance, and even breaking your fall.
Finally, we set up a new large-scale bamboo growing field, automatically harvested using a slime block flying machine and collected using a team of allays!

That tip to measure the base lengths for builds using scaffolding is top tier!
I'm building a castle on a 7x7x7 block grid, and I plan on using scaffolding to make a scale model, with each block representing the 7x7x7 block build pattern.
I was so lucky to find a brown panda in the wild. Was feeling pretty chuffed for a while.
Chuffed to bits, perhaps? :D
Pixl, this is the most important episode EVER!!!
Scaffolding always drives me crazy, because it sounds so inconsistent! But now that I know how they actually work, maybe I start using it more!
Pix: You can use scaffolding to measure
Me: *Pikachu face*
Don't worry, I still use shovel paving dirt. And still count wrong somehow
@@hikari1690I use torches
A while back I built an elaborate zoo filled with unusual mobs, and not only did I find a brown panda but I accidentally bred up a sneezy baby panda! I was so proud to add this cute little mob to my panda enclosure but it was definitely a let down when it grew up and stopped blowing bubbles... I should've realized it would grow into the regular weak panda but at least for a brief, shining moment my collection felt complete 😂
Wait wait what!!! I did not know pandas will eat cake.😮
I have a feeling you'll need a lot more storage for the new bamboo farm 😂
Just want to say thank you for these series, my 5 year old son has just started playing Minecraft and thought I would play to help him. As a newbie Minecraft can be a minefield but after watching series 1 from the start and probably 30 episodes in and watching others that catch my eye I have learnt a lot and you explain it so well so keep up the good work. Big big thank you
I'd be interested in the reliability of that flying machine. Usually, if you unload a flying machine while it's going, there's a high chance of it breaking, either by the slime bars connecting somehow, or by the piston failing to pull the slime bar for other reasons. That's because the game unfortunately doesn't properly serialize the order of scheduled ticks, and thus can cause them to fire in the wrong order upon reload. Another concern is that a flying machine may move into unloaded chunks, which would also break it, as block updates don't happen there at all. (In the worst case you can get a retracted piston with an extended piston head in front, which prevents the piston from either extending or retracting, and you need to break and replace it.)
Same for minecarts honestly
@@paulelderson934 Not in recent Java edition versions. (Unless you play on a non-vanilla server, such as Paper, Spigot, Purpur, etc.)
scaffolding is such an underrated block. I like the fact that it constructs it's own support periodically. You get more spots to climb up to where you are working. If it's used like real life scaffolding and left in place for the duration of the build, it is a huge time saver. Using it as a measuring tool is an awesome idea! I will definitely be using that next time i need to plot out a build.
This bamboo farm is so op and amazing 🎉❤
Remembers anyone Ilmanogs contraption that he made in order to get slime in his peaceful series in peaceful mode?
The snotty spiral of sadness…
@@TheRealWormbo It was cruel and fascinating in same measures
I've only seen 1 brown panda when Da Lil Red did a video on all types. It's pretty darn cute!
One more fun thing I wanna point out about scaffolding extension limits, you can just about double the space between support pillars if you put the support pillars in before trying to connect them all! You can get six blocks out between pillars, but that goes for both sides of the pillar, if that makes sense. So you can have I think 12 blocks total between pillars, if you build out from each side. I hope that makes sense? I love scaffolding, so it’s cool to see Pix explain it so well!
I bought java/pc edition for the first time this past summer (inspired by this series; previously I’ve always been a bedrock player) and I spawned in a jungle world. I found a brown panda in a bamboo forest on my first day of playing or something- I was in disbelief😂
Hahaha so lucky! That rules
Besides scaffolding, I use bamboo as a fuel source to smelt cactus & kelps (passive xp farms from furnaces). I sold the green dyes & dried kelps for emeralds. I turned the excess bamboos to sticks and sold to fetchers for emeralds.
What trade gives emeralds for green dye/kelp?
@@ruru7494 Shepherd 'expert level' buy green dye. Butcher 'expert level' buy dried kelp blocks, so just craft the dried kelp into blocks to sell to the butcher.
Note: Green dye is one of 6 dyes a shepherd expert level can buy, you might need to breed several shepherds to get this specific trade. In my world, I have a total of 8 shepherds who buy my green dyes, and a total of 16 butchers who buy my dried kelp blocks. I become super rich just by selling these 2 items. All my beacons bases are made of emerald blocks.
You made me love Minecraft again. 😅👍🏼👍🏼 your builds are absolutely brilliant 👏🏼🤩🤩
Cloud height is exactly half way between -y64 and the build limit.
Cloud height is at whatever height I always build platforms in the sky 😂
Absolutely awesome video as always!! Such a perfect balance of informative and entertaining 🙏 thank you so much for all your work!! Your videos always help a lot
Ah I was wondering when Pix would make a flying machine powered allay bamboo farm
I learnt so much in this episode! Thanks Pix!
I needed this scaffold tutorial! Thanks!
Interestingly the placement mechanics are different in bedrock in several ways. I kind of wish it was the same between the two versions, because a lot of the Java mechanics would be more beneficial and easier to use. That said, it's still one of the most useful things to me. Measuring, building, a few farms, and such are all things I've been using them for, but recently I started taking them when exploring, which has a few benefits:
- you can easily see where you've been
- in groups, others can take your path
- works well going up and down since it's a gravity block
All this time later, and you're finally talking about scaffolding for building. That's one of the first things I acquire when starting a new world.
It is not necessary to continuously sound the noteblock to keep the allays focused. They will otherwise stay on the job for about 30 seconds. An observer clock is compact but it's also noisy. A hopper-latch hopper clock can be set up to sound the noteblock at 30-second intervals and is silent aside from the occasional noteblock sound. It's bulkier but works well as an alternative to an observer clock.
I've only been playing MC just over a year and despite having bred 100's of pandas to achieve the brown, I've still never seen one either bred or in the wild. With the bamboo farm triggering of the flying machine I just set one of the daylight sensors to night, and the other to day. It's more than enough harvesting for my single player world. I also like to set a row or sugarcane at each edge of he farm to keep that ticking over. I always forget to switch it off entirely when I leave the area though.. Flying machine repairs are just part of my life now. I've tried chunk aligning the farm and that seems to help a little but that may just be confirmation bias on my part.
Minecraft Devs: No, we won't add fireflies, frogs can't eat them and they will hurt themselves
Pandas: Mmm, finally some good cake-ing food
Pixlriffs, my man! Thank you for always putting out content that is full of fun and education.
I had no clue they did that with cake, that’s kinda cool lol
I use daylight detectors but one is set for night and trapdoors. Harvests twice a day, no clocks. Do have a hopper minecart running below.
this video made me realise i made my bamboo and sugarcane farm on mud but still used a minecart
I'm thinking 4 boats balanced on the note block with a hopper cart on both sides. Build your transport and storage, then build a wall around it. Pixlriffs built this a while back, can't remember what the farm was, but there was a lot of something that didn't make it in.
“Snotty panda” is going to be my favorite phrase of the day 😂
5:20 Learning new things after years of gaming
Great as Always 👍
I have seen a naturally spawned brown panda in a previous hardcore world. I was so surprised when I saw it walking out from the bamboo jungle
I love your tutorials/guides. Do you happen to have one on how to use mods? As in selecting them installing them and using them?
Wow I learnt so much about scaffolding! We have a brown panda near spawn on our server (spawn is in a bamboo jungle), but I’d never seen one before!
Scaffolding can so be really useful for planning.
I have a storage system in my castle that has every stackable item in it and therefore it is two stories tall.
Paired with the actual rooms above it, I needed a staircase to get easier to the sorting system which had just one entrance and a bunch of holes where I flew in and out with an elytra.
But I already had walls going straight down so I used scaffolding to mark out the edges of the "staircase tower" and I even pre built the 9x9 staircase.
Hey Pix!,
I've loved your survival guide series.
I started watching during S1 (which I binged in ~ a month).
I stopped watching recently, but now I've gotten back into S3.
I just wanted to thank you for making this amazing series!
:D
OP FARM
By adding a single redstone lamp and an observer (as well as changing the orientation of the observers) you can make a flying machine that resets itself, so you only need the launching hardware on one side.
Is that because of the delayed powering off on the redstone lamp?
Yes. Since Redstone lamps take 1 redstone tick to turn off, an observer will give two outputs when observing a lamp that receives a 1 tick pulse, and since that second output comes after all the pistons move, can be used send it back in the other direction if the flying machine is stopped.
Didn’t a RUclipsr make a slime farm from sneezing pandas for fun. Mango? I can’t remember but it was an *insane* build!
9:02 - I've seen a couple! I mostly see them when playing Bedrock, so I'm not sure if the spawn rates are different there
You did miss 2 very special mechanics about scaffolding. Firstly, entities can pass up through scaffolding but not down; this is used in certain wither cage designs. Secondly, it can be used to translate a redstone signal vertically almost instantly with a trapdoor at the bottom and an observer up top
The scaffolding restone trick great! Same with walls of course
@@paulelderson934 yes, although I find scaffolding slightly simpler if a bit more finicky
Another trick to getting down from tall scaffolding safely _and_ not lose too many pieces is to aim for a small corner of the piece you’re standing on when you hold the mouse button down. If done right you shouldn’t break the next piece down until you’ve fallen down to it.
Yeah I have seen a brown panda. It was really shocking so I put it in a bamboo raft lol
I wish I could go back to 2018-19, back when everyone was hyped for pandas. It feels like they were forgotten once 1.15 came out
Building this bamboo farm immediately, I just got allays last night to help clear out an amethyst geode!
I thought I wouldn't pick up any new scaffolding tips. I was wrong!
i had a world that i found two brown pandas. i lived just outside a jungle, and i kept both of them in the same boat
Best guide
I play bedrock and in 2021 I had a world where I found a naturally spawned brown panda.. I was so excited that I still remeber it.
On one of my bedrock worlds I have found a brown panda. The first time I did though I freaked out since they are a rare find

Thank you so much Pixlriffs!
Just awesome! *`'꒰⇀◒⥐◒↼꒱'´*
Doc has a little trap door roof around the note block collection spot so items don’t end up on top of it.
Interesting that you basically let the Allays free roam. I didn't trust them so far with their AI to stick around the area. Will they stay near the note block even if there is nothing to collect? I know without any prompt that they will wonder off eventually.
They’ll return to the note block occasionally _as long as_ they’re close enough to hear it when it plays. If they wander out of range of the note block and too much time elapses, then they’ll look for the player instead. (I’ve been annoyed by this behavior many times.)
Recently found out about u from Minecraft SOS, thought I’d subscribe your videos are so cool and it’d be soo cool to say I helped you hit 1M subs 🤞
pix im curious if youll be doing a video on resource packs anytime soon?
I have a brown panda that I found and have bred two others from it. I have at least one of each of all seven. It is a project!
i cant wait for the next patch with crafter block, right now bamboo farm annoys me. i've built mine way bigger than necessary and now i have to deal with tons upon tons of bamboo, but i don't want to remove it.
this is a really weird coincidence bc I was just watching some old minecraft content from early 2019 when the panda snapshots were out
I find scaffolding so useful that I have an entire shulker box of it always in my ender chest
I had no idea that pandas ate cake!
I was hoping you would show the scaffolding clutch.
On a java server I bred a brown panda. Got it right away within the first few tries.
A word of caution - by building this near the base with no way to turn it off, the bamboo farm stands a good chance of getting unloaded while the flying machine is running as you come and go, which will usually break the flying machine.
8:53 "[baby panda sneezes] is not really a viable way to build a slime farm even in peaceful mode" - tell that to ilmango and his "Mega Efficient Slime Farm (for peaceful)".
A wool block on the noteblock in the bambufarm will take away the sound if you dont want it.
I really wish more mobs, and especially villagers and their variants, would be able to get different moving mechanics like the pandas get. We definitely need a mob update at some point lol
Would love to see a villager rolling around lmao
I did not know minecraft pandas can eat cake...
Hi! You don't mention how hostile mobs interact with scaffolding.
Do skeleton arrows destroy them?
Do gasp or blaze fireballs destroy them?
Can creepers, zombies, or skeletons, etc ascend or descend on them?
I actually got lucky and got two brown pandas from breeding but they died to a lightning strike and haven't seen them since.
Flowing water over the noteblock, held in by open fence gates? Might be easier than trapdoors?
my dad and i use your seed and found a brown panda!! the cords are around: (x,z) -2,225 / 2,888 :) i hope you can find it!!
this farm is really useful, I also made one in my world after watching Docm77 episode
I play on ps5 and I can lock my crouch, which does cause me to dip down on the scaffold a bit, but then I can climb back up while staying crouched. 15:11
I've only seen a brown panda 1 time. Much less often than a brown or pink sheep
When are you going to provide the world to download ?
Instead of turning down note block sounds, couldn't you just put a block above the note block to mute it? Or would that make it so the allays can't detect it either?
Note block has to produce sounds for allays to detect it.
I can crouch on scaffolding on my Nintendo Switch. Crouch and down are 2 different buttons.
I had no idea about the cake oh my god since when was that a thing???
I really wish there were better ways to get certain items in peaceful. I much prefer to avoid combat, but they make it so hard to do things that way.
wake up babe new survival guide just dropped
Heyy, something to make my day better 🥳
Do frogs eat baby slime, or just magma cubes?
I see brown pandas all the time on bedrock
I hope at ep 100 will be a world download link :D
"Bedrock players enjoy carrying all that cake around" 🍑😩
I found a brown panda while speed running
I just realised my design is based on ilmango's. Miss that guy😢
Hello. I just watched the episode in the series where you raid a treasure room bastion. Can someone please tell me what they think of this tactic to raid one? I am thinking about using chunkbase, the website that Pix showed us in this series's first episode, to find the coordinates of a bastion. Then I will go to those coordinates underground in the nether. Then I will drink a fire resist potion and dig up. Will that take me straight to the treasure room? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As a bedrock player, I can confirm that cake is not stackable on that edition either
I found 2 brown pandas on my survival world while getting bamboo lol
Wow an early video glad to see
I don't know if all these panda types exist on bedrock I've only seen normal pandas and brown pandas
Strange, haven't seen the wake up babe comment
First time being early let's go
HeyPix, have you stopped this series? I know you have started other series, but……?
No, this series hasn't ended. A new episode should be out this week! I just prioritize multiplayer projects when they happen, because other people are putting time into the series and I want to match their pace.
Survival Guide will be an ongoing series that lasts multiple years, so don't worry about it going anywhere!
My internet has been lagging lately and the intro got cut. What I heard was
"Hello I'm pixlriffs and welcome to the minecraft survival guyyyyyy"
New series perchance? 🤣
I wish the baby panda can munch on cake atleast!
9:07 didn't he stick a brown panda into a boat? I think I saw a short 🤣
