I’ve got the FileHub. It’s not all singing and dancing and due to the iOS sandboxing limitations, it’s difficult to copy files to iOS. But streaming works very well. When trying to copy anything to iOS, you will likely need a powered hub as usb-c only provides limited power. (I think about 100mA). SSD’s and old hard drives would have no chance without an external power supply.
I use a ravpower wireless hub. Connect via wireless and you can hook up hard drives to the hub. It also has sd cards. It also allows transfer to hub as well
I’ve always wondered this. Having this feature would make me own an iPad hands down over an iPad. Generally speaking when you connect a usb3.1 to laptops it downloads the drivers but I don’t know where the drivers would be downloaded or if it would even react that way with an iPad .. unless that happens iPad is not a computer
I like your video, but you are not old enough to have used cordless phones and pulling up the “antenna” to have a conversation in the back yard. IT WAS AMAZING to be able to do that. Us old people thought it was magic to have a cordless phone in the 1980’s.
Hi, I found your video really usually but I have a question. Do you know if I will be able to connect and access information on a USB memory stick to the iPad Pro using a USB-C to USB adapter?
I am looking for an adapter that links my IPad 10.2" (Not IPAD Pro) to my ring light to shoot videos for RUclips. I can use the USB port on my iMac but it doesn't allow me the flexibility I need. The ring and tripod come with a USB male plug for power so I am assuming the Apple USB-C adaptor will work for this?
Sir, I am having the same problem with my iPad Pro 12 inches but not on my iPad Pro 10 inches. I connected my two head usb and lightning with my iPad Pro 10 it is easy. Second I use other usb with usb-c connect iPad Pro 12 inches does not read at all then I connected to my PC it is on charge. Yes, I think I will buy adapter as you recommended. Thanks
Some WiFi connectable wireless hard drives work with companion apps. They allow fast access to large files. Also, not all 4K video will play on the iPad Pro. Certain codecs are not supported H.264 and H.265 are not natively supported by Apple, but some video editing apps like Luma Fusion will allow you to open, edit, or play H.264 or H.265. Also RUclips’s 4K codec is not supported on iPad. iPad Pro will play Video files recorded on GoPro in 4K, but DJI drones 4K will import, but will not play.
Note for new viewers: as of iOS 13, usb sticks and external drives do work. More generally, the new “iPadOS” makes the iPad Pro an even more useful device. That said, don’t install the public beta on your work device. It’s still a little buggy and no one wants to accidentally delete their stuff! The full version will be out this September (2019)
Apple does not supply drivers to read USB drives or flash drives for IOS as it does for its desktop and laptops. SanDisk has its own app to read its Iexpand drives which has worked fine for me. Get the straight one and not the one with the curve as that one has a problem due to the pressure it puts on the port.
Nicolai Mladenoff Have you tried opening them with Pages, word or other apps? Apple apps are geared to working off of your device or iCloud. The magic is being able to open say a Pages document stored in iCloud in every Apple device you own without needing extra hardware. I use SanDisk iExpand for my external storage and a USB hub to create a bank of these devices. WD sells a WiFi Hd with all kinds of features and all my devices can connect to it. Wired connections are less important now than 20 years ago. SanDisk also has a WiFi USB stick. I too was upset a year ago when I couldn’t connect drives to iPad until I resolved the problem as I describe here. I am using 3 San Disks USB flash drives in a hub to automatically back up my FileMaker Pro files as I develop them, one of which is the iExpand. I can open all types of files stored on the drive using SanDisk’s app. Hope this helps. I agree that Ape should update the Files app to do more but then didn’t my new external drive download it’s own handlers? Are there any drives that offer IOS apps and shouldn’t that be there responsibility just as it has been?
You can get wifi devices that you connect your external HDD and USB keys to. Then you connect to the device via wifi and the. You can access anything and everything that is on your external storage. I think they are pretty good. I’m saving up for one for my 11” iPad Pro

Can I use the iPad like I use a computer or MacBook Pro just simply plugging the device into the computer/MacBook with a usb cable? If yes what adapter do I need for the iPad Pro to transfer data from the site on the iPad to the device that needs the update! Thank You!!
um, that's kind of what we're talking about here. options include emailing it as an attachment, sharing via airdrop, using itunes, using dropbox, or in this video's case, trying to use the apple usb c adapter and a usb a thumb drive.
@@MikeKoGTC thanks for replying. The things is that it was never clear to me that there's a difference between transfering image and video from other files. It's clear to me now, though. 😉 Thanks a lot and keep with the good work.
I know I’m late, but I have thumb drive I plug into the USB-C and transfer files. Basically how it works is that if the drive or ssd have their own apps that can be downloaded on the iPad they work. This is how your stuck using external drives until a dedicated file manager comes to iOS.
and then is the workflow that you are then supposed to transfer the file from the storage app in to wherever you want to use it? like powerpoint, word, or trialpad?

Apple wants us all to store our files on their iCloud for a few dollars more. That's their 'cutting edge, best ever' and all that bs. Not bothered about their users needs just their bottom line
Thomas Regan I've also discovered that backing up to computer makes the computer the domina tbackup. I can't delete photos from iPad that came from the computer ... Sad.
Thomas Regan iCloud does require an internet connection and has had problems in the past but for the past year it has worked flawlessly for me and whether I create a file on the iPad Pro or iPhone 8 Plus, both can see that file once the transfer is finished. That is its main value, making files available to any device that can connect. An external hard drive is more secure, etc. and worth having but it too has its downside such as needing to be present and connected to a particular device while iCloud simply works with no hassle as soon as you have an internet connection. AirDrop is also quite useful for transferring files among Apple computers and devices.
It works for me, and I haven't paid any extra. Now, if a company is going to offer a service and charge money for it, they have to charge enough money to make a profit after they pay out all of the costs to develop, build the infrastructure, maintain, marketing/advertising, support that service, plus pay applicable taxes and after it's all said and done, can they make a profit? They don't make any profit until they reach a certain amount of scale (customers). Not everyone that owns an Apple device that uses iCloud pays extra for the service. Depending on ones workflow, they might use multiple Cloud services. Look at Adobe, people are using that and their cloud services isn't cheap. Obviously, as time goes on, they find out more about their user's needs and maybe be able to figure out how to charge less or give more storage for the same price if they can. But yes, they are a for profit business, and from the sounds of it, you expect them to be a not for profit business.
They also want you to buy more storage on the ipad itself. The options jump from 64Gb to 256Gb. There's no 128Gb option, which would be a sweet spot for a whole lot of people. And of course they want some $600 more for 1Terabyte.
Ok, without reading all 230 comments... did you try to load an 8gb document onto the sd/mini-sd card from a MacBook pro and see if it will transfer or pull up on the iPad pro, the same way your 2 videos pulled up using the sd card reader, plugged in by the usb-c??
You speak so nicely. ☺️ I think, USB C is just a marketing attempt of apple to attract android users, but at the end it has same limitations like before. You forgot to test chargers from various USB C android devices. Have you tested?
I’m really needing to connect an external tie mic to my iPad Pro 2018 model. It is definitely possible using the lightening connected iPad models (which I don’t have). I’m needing the benefit of clearly watching and hearing myself speak and present (head to toe) in real time, while recording. Is this actually possible using this £2000 tablet? With many thanks and growing frustration at Apple at how complicated this seems.
which model iPad do you have? if you have anything except the newest iPad Pros, you should be able to use the 3.55mm headphone jack. if you have the usb c ipad that no longer has a headphone jack, stay tuned. i'll be testing out a couple of options.

The only workaround to see videos on the fly using SD or microSD is wireless storage. I use Verbatim MediaShare Wireless (mini). It works very well and is a small device. I guess Apple will have to change the iOS software to expand the number of devices compatible with the new 2018 iPad Pro.
Very simple format the SSD as FAT32, create a file at the root called DCIM, (The 1998 JEITA standardized Digital Camera File System) put all your media files in the DCIM directory and/or any subdirectories, to be easy name your files to start with IMG_XXXXXX. ( jpg, gif, MP4, MOV etc ). You can format it EXT 2 as well if you run into the FAT32 2GB file size limit.
Hey, one question just to get the things right Plugging an adapter for an sd card/ micro sd card works and you can import your files to your Ipad but plugging in an regular external hard drive via usb-c doesn't work right?
yes and no. if the files on your sd card are video and picture files, then yes. you can import to the photos app. if it's any other file, i don't think it works, regardless of whether it's on an sd card or micro sd
I have a similar need. I don’t want to store my large 4K video files on the iPad since they will eventually fill up my IPad Pro (256 GB SSD drive) and blow out my iCloud storage bill. Supposedly Apple will introduce access to external SSD’s disk via USB-C IPad Pro port with IOS 13. The other alternative apart from waiting would be to use the Chinese Ravpowerfilehub plus. The issue with this is continual support for IOS upgrades and I think it only supports NTFS (MS windows file format) not the apple file format. This means if you have an external drive formatted in NTFS it appears as read only at least it does on my iMac 27 with Mojave. Very disappointing but unfortunately Apple doesn’t like to play with MS and vice versa. A real pain all round.
Hi, @groundworktc. It's a big let down, I know but there's a relatively cheap solution to work around the restriction and that's by using the Ravpower filehub Plus. It ables you to connect your peripherals through a wireless connection. The module comes with software as well to connect to it but I also use an app called filebrowser which actually connects to different types of wifi network peripherals. Filehub works perfectly with this app. It's not the fastest solution but you will be able to stream video on it and such. Good luck!
GroundworkTC I agree totally. I share the frustration. Given Apple’s way of operating I don’t think that they will budge from their model so I had to figure out to get a proper workflow.

Omg, kofuzi has another youtube channel? Or are you twins? Came across this channel while researching accessories for the ipad pro. From what i gathered via other yt reviews, the apple usb c hdmi dongle has the benefit of displaying on 60hz monitors when compared to other third party hdmi to usb c dongles. But this is the first time i heard of your issue. Usually cable length issues have something to do with attenuation that could be different based on the signal transmission, which can possibly vary from product to product. I’m usually not confident in Apple’s skinny cable design that usually fails around or near the connector area. Perhaps that has something to do with it?
I am having to use all kinds of workarounds to use my 2018 PRO11. Adapters and expensive Apple accessories is a downside. Not only will it reject storage but also microphones.
If you plug the iPhone directly into the iPad, can you transfer video files? Looking for the best way to move video files, shot on the iPhone XS Max in 4K, from the phone, to the iPad, in order to edit them and produce in IMovie. I use a ravpower wireless hub. Connect via wireless and you can hook up hard drives to the hub. It also has sd cards. It also allows transfer to hub as well
many have recommended the same workaround. my disappointment is in the need for a workaround
GroundworkTC hopefully iOS 13 addresses it as well.
A USB-C connector to one terabyte memory card can plug into your iPad or your laptop.
I use this all the time to transfer video data
can i use this for printing
I’ve always wondered this. Having this feature would make me own an iPad hands down over an iPad. Generally speaking when you connect a usb3.1 to laptops it downloads the drivers but I don’t know where the drivers would be downloaded or if it would even react that way with an iPad .. unless that happens iPad is not a computer
I like your video, but you are not old enough to have used cordless phones and pulling up the “antenna” to have a conversation in the back yard. IT WAS AMAZING to be able to do that. Us old people thought it was magic to have a cordless phone in the 1980’s.
Can we connect a headset with usb connector?? Will it work with this adapter on ipad?
Hi, I found your video really usually but I have a question. Do you know if I will be able to connect and access information on a USB memory stick to the iPad Pro using a USB-C to USB adapter?
at the time of this video? no.
since iPadOS has released? yes, if it's formatted for macOS.
Thanks
what are you trying to connect to your hubs? until iPad OS releases, the usb c port's functionality on the iPad Pro is pretty limited
Also RUclips’s 4K codec is not supported on iPad. iPad Pro will play Video files recorded on GoPro in 4K, but DJI drones 4K will import, but will not play.
overall, i find the general landscape still too complex to be able to use the iPad as a video editing tool.
The Every Day Dad has confirmed that iOS 13 will even recognize Sony video files (I use a sony a6300).
Apple does not supply drivers to read USB drives or flash drives for IOS as it does for its desktop and laptops. SanDisk has its own app to read its Iexpand drives which has worked fine for me. Get the straight one and not the one with the curve as that one has a problem due to the pressure it puts on the port.
that makes sense
I’m saving up for one for my 11” iPad Pro
it's disappointing though, that we can't use the usb c port to connect usb c devices. that's my point.
Hi michael, first time watching your non running videos... hihi
I Find my samsung T5 in the app called ” filés ” on my iPad Pro 2020.
Hi GroundworkTC, can you use your ipad pro to install a printer (e.g. Samsung Xpress M2026W)? I just wanted to know whether i need to buy a laptop or an ipad is enough? The installation of the printer require me to install a certain program as a start-up to install the printer.
i'm not sure i understand. what are you installing the printer to?
Can I use my iPad Pro with lightning connection to update firmware on other devices, like turtle beach headphones, Astro a50 headphones, or any device that needs a firmware update that needs a usb cable?? Can I use the iPad like I use a computer or MacBook Pro just simply plugging the device into the computer/MacBook with a usb cable? If yes what adapter do I need for the iPad Pro to transfer data from the site on the iPad to the device that needs the update!
Thank You!!
no. you cannot use it this way.
Have you tried it with iOS 13 beta yet because I believe usb-c flash drive and ssd work on iOS 13
i have not tried it yet. i will once it gets out of beta
Thanks for the video. But why nobody talks about transfering documents and spreadsheets? Is it possible?
um, that's kind of what we're talking about here. options include emailing it as an attachment, sharing via airdrop, using itunes, using dropbox, or in this video's case, trying to use the apple usb c adapter and a usb a thumb drive.
@@MikeKoGTC thanks for replying. The things is that it was never clear to me that there's a difference between transfering image and video from other files. It's clear to me now, though. 😉 Thanks a lot and keep with the good work.
You would need a RAVpower to connect your hard drive into your iPad Pro which will allow you to extract and or save it to your external hard drive.
after tens of comments advising me to do so, i bought one. i think it's benefits are overstated
Great perspective. Thanks for uploading. Links to the products would make this even better.
ok
Can sble to connect to Samsung c type in iPad pro 12.9 4th generation 2020 for file transfer?? Please do reply
What connecting hey dingle to your iPad Pro and then another Another device you’ll have to connect the dingle to a power supply via the USB port so there is enough power to run the ad on device
Can you use a headset with the USB port?
Yomtoc type c to DP.heard it can run at 8k60hz and 4k 120hz
13:35 "I would say probably the thing that I would want to work most with the USB-C port on the iPad Pro doesn't work and this is a major disappointment" But Apple knows what its users really want
Hi, can I connect a usb mic to this? Cheers
The issue of attaching a USB-C to a SS HD has been resolved in iOS 13. But would have to format in exFAT. See iOS 13 & iPad Pro hard drive compatibility and demonstration by Air Photography
great into.
keep in mind that ios 13 did not exist at the time this video was published
Can you use the dongle for printing documents
Have you tried plugging into power when using you USB flash drive? The iPad doesn’t have enough power by itself.
I connected my jumpdrive to the usb-c adapter and it did not work initially. I then plugged in my usb-c cord that plugs into the power source and my jumpdrive came on. I did not even need to plug it into the electric outlet.
can i connect my earpods (iphone 7 design) to usb c digital AV in my macbook pro 2020? please help me ,im in a hurry 🥺
I Using this ipad for my musical things.so i want to connect my irig midi keys.i have one spliter for that keyboard.now i want to connect my apple lightning headphones.now i need one connector like type c to 1 lightning and 1 type c port. where can i get this connector?!
i've never seen such a thing
Apple wants us all to store our files on their iCloud for a few dollars more. That's their 'cutting edge, best ever' and all that bs. Not bothered about their users needs just their bottom line
i think it's a bit more nuanced than that, but disappointing nonetheless
Yes we GET IT! YOU ARE A BIG SPECIAL ATTORNEY!!! WHO CARES ENOUGH
Ok, without reading all 230 comments... did you try to load an 8gb document onto the sd/mini-sd card from a MacBook pro and see if it will transfer or pull up on the iPad pro, the same way your 2 videos pulled up using the sd card reader, plugged in by the usb-c??
8gb document? i did not try it
pdf that was less than 8gb? i tried it
You speak so nicely. ☺️
I think, USB C is just a marketing attempt of apple to attract android users, but at the end it has same limitations like before.
You forgot to test chargers from various USB C android devices. Have you tested?
i don't have any android devices in our office with usb c
@@MikeKoGTC
oooo, means you are a hardcore apple guy 😎
I bought a pendrive with usb c and normal , and it works
The limitation is voltage draw of the USB device you need to use devices that do not draw more than 500 mw draw....
sounds reasonable
i have the 2017 model ipad pro what do i need to connect sdhc card exsternal usb hard drive
How can I eject safely a USB- C from Ipad with iOS 14.2?
can you connect 2.4ghz dongle wireless headphone to the usb A port? can you also try to connect it to android phone that have type c
This is amazing bro, is there any possibility to use flash type files on iPad? Did you try it?
wait for iPad OS
Hopefully (:
Have you tried formatting it to apfs?
Can I use this for prineters without airprint?
I’m really needing to connect an external tie mic to my iPad Pro 2018 model. It is definitely possible using the lightening connected iPad models (which I don’t have). I’m needing the benefit of clearly watching and hearing myself speak and present (head to toe) in real time, while recording. Is this actually possible using this £2000 tablet? With many thanks and growing frustration at Apple at how complicated this seems.
let me see what i can figure out. are you trying to get an external mic for facetime? or for recording videos in the camera app?
I’m trying to video myself (head to toe) about 3-4 metres away using the front FaceTime camera. Thx
which model iPad do you have? if you have anything except the newest iPad Pros, you should be able to use the 3.55mm headphone jack.
if you have the usb c ipad that no longer has a headphone jack, stay tuned. i'll be testing out a couple of options.

Yes, it’s the USB-C latest model. I’m sub’d and 🔔 to your channel so will look out for any solution. Thx
The only workaround to see videos on the fly using SD or microSD is wireless storage. I use Verbatim MediaShare Wireless (mini). It works very well and is a small device. I guess Apple will have to change the iOS software to expand the number of devices compatible with the new 2018 iPad Pro.
i don't think they will, but i was hoping
Very simple format the SSD as FAT32, create a file at the root called DCIM, (The 1998 JEITA standardized Digital Camera File System) put all your media files in the DCIM directory and/or any subdirectories, to be easy name your files to start with IMG_XXXXXX. ( jpg, gif, MP4, MOV etc ). You can format it EXT 2 as well if you run into the FAT32 2GB file size limit.
so i'd have to rename a powerpoint file with an IMG_ prefix first?
Hey, one question just to get the things right
Plugging an adapter for an sd card/ micro sd card works and you can import your files to your Ipad but plugging in an regular external hard drive via usb-c doesn't work right?
yes and no. if the files on your sd card are video and picture files, then yes. you can import to the photos app. if it's any other file, i don't think it works, regardless of whether it's on an sd card or micro sd
@@MikeKoGTC have you tried transferring .pdf or .docx files from the micro sd card to the ipad? Would it work?
SSD connect to USB C with IOS 14 . Have to look at the trainings video for IOS 14 but filemanagement was a new feature
Can you use that connector but on a iPad mini with a lighting to usb c adapter then plug in that dongle
A real pain all round.
i think the high praise for the ravpower is unwarranted
Hi, @groundworktc. It's a big let down, I know but there's a relatively cheap solution to work around the restriction and that's by using the Ravpower filehub Plus. It ables you to connect your peripherals through a wireless connection. The module comes with software as well to connect to it but I also use an app called filebrowser which actually connects to different types of wifi network peripherals. Filehub works perfectly with this app. It's not the fastest solution but you will be able to stream video on it and such. Good luck!
i understand there are workarounds.
my point is that there shouldn't be.
GroundworkTC I agree totally. I share the frustration. Given Apple’s way of operating I don’t think that they will budge from their model so I had to figure out to get a proper workflow.
Groundworktc New to your Channel and I did not even know that they had a remote that could be used for PowerPoint thanks for the knowledge pretty impressive.Very much enjoyed your Video and now I'm going to check out comments to find out if they do have something or if someone knows.Look forward to seeing more of your content. Thanks so much for sharing Deb 👌👍✌

Hi! Can you connect an external mic with the USB-C adapter or do you need a hub?
Hi Hanala, I have connected a Technica AT2020 microphone directly into the usb to usb c connector and it was working fine using GarageBand.
@@caspers5431 thanks😁 I went on Amazon, got the USBC adapter and am recording for my RUclips channel today. Check it out, I dropped my iPad Pro, on camera, and just posted the video. It already has 5,000 views! 🤣 ruclips.net/user/hanalasagal
i've had mixed results. depends on the mic, it seems.
Excellent research 💪🏼
@GroundWorkTC. For the SSD and flash drive to work. Just add a folder named DCIM in the root directory of your chosen storage device. Place all your video that you want to transfer to your iPad pro via USB-C. The ipad will find the DCIM root folder and hey presto... 💪
and that will work so i can transfer a couple GB of PDF's? or even just a couple of ppt files?
@@MikeKoGTC only for video files 📂, not pdf or ppt
Ravpower will work with iPad and SSD drive with using an app for that device
that's what i hear.
Please fix the focus on your camera. Good content by the way.
Thank you so much
Excellent video my man
thanks!
Can you connect Epson printer plug in it?
Hi there, great video! Try using a Wireless external hard drive.
i have no doubt this workaround works. but it does nothing to lessen my disappointment in the usb c port here.
Perhaps that has something to do with it?
yo, what's going on?
can you charge the ipad pro and plug in a usb a (normal) at the same time
Try downloading Filza , you dont need jailbreak since you don’t Need root access, you can find it from websites like tweakbox
interesting. i haven't heard of that one yet
GroundworkTC I’m sorry I tried downloading filza but apparently you need JB for Filza to work , sorry
I am having to use all kinds of workarounds to use my 2018 PRO11. Adapters and expensive Apple accessories is a downside. Not only will it reject storage but also microphones.
that's a bummer
If you plug the iPhone directly into the iPad, can you transfer video files? Looking for the best way to move video files, shot on the iPhone XS Max in 4K, from the phone, to the iPad, in order to edit them and produce in IMovie. I’ve tried Air Drop, but a wired solution is probably the fastest. I know I can download the pics directly from my phone to my computer and then upload again to a wireless SanDiak (for example) but looking for a simpler solution. Thanks for your help. BTW, plugged my Samsung 860 EVO 2TB (with Satechi usb-C enclosure) into the iPad and it will not spin up the drive? Any suggestions on why?
you should be able to import videos to the iPad from your iphone by cable
Errrrrr.... Had no idea you are on YT elsewhere! I'm subbed to your other channel!
i'm everywhere
Did you try putting a DCIM folder in the drive and putting your media in the folder?
works for photos only, it seems
@@MikeKoGTC Exactly, in my case for other things Google Drive takes care of the rest anyways.
