Yamal has said on many occasions that he tries to be most like Neymar and that Neymar's playstyle is his daily inspiration on the pitch. It's clear within seconds of watching him play that this is true. Some of the things Yamal does at his age remind me of Neymar at Santos more than anything Messi ever did, and that's obviously not a slight on Messi, it's just an acknowledgement of the differences between Neymar and Messi. When messi played as a right-winger, that was mainly by name only, since he used the wing as a starting to point to cut inside and do the magic that we know him for. Neymar dominated the sideline, abusing his quick feet and skill on the ball to humiliate defenders. Lamine Yamal enjoys hugging the sidelines, nutmegging or outsmarting defenders in 1v1 or 1v2 situations, rather than orchestrating entire attacks from the inside. So it's clear which one he should really be compared to, if we're going to do that. I just don't think we'll ever see someone like Messi again. He had the ability to beat defenders like neymar or hazard, but he also dictated entire attacks on his own and created chances the way you'd expect from a skilled midfielder like Pirlo or Iniesta. And the transition between those two roles was so seamless that you'd often see him do one after the other in the same attack, seconds apart. And on top of that, he also had the awareness of a world-class poacher, finding space between defenders the way CR7 or Lewandowski has mastered. Messi was all of these things, and did all of these things for 60+ minutes of every single game that he ever played for Barcelona. He is undisputedly unique and we will all be talking about the latest wonderkids in 2060 comparing them to messi because we all hope, deep down, that messi isn't the first and last of his kind.
