  • Does Elon Musk not realize how he comes across or is he playing at such a high level that he couldn't care less?
In this video, Elon sits down for an interview at the United States Air Force Association and is very candid with his predictions for the future.
We'll break down the subcommunication behind the interaction and try to decide if Elon was oblivious or just didn't care.

@@PuffingOnClouds Who says that the general is losing his job? The same goes for every support person in the Air Force. The pilots only make up a fraction of the Air Force, and the fighter pilots only a fraction of that. And even they won't be losing their jobs. They'll just be doing it remotely.
The people that fuel, arm, and maintain the planes will still be there. The support infrastructure will still be there, though perhaps distributed differently. The cargo plane pilots will still be there, at least for a while.
It kinda reminds me of the hard lesson that the various military organizations learned in WW1. The cavalry charge is dead. Doing it is suicide. The machine gun totally changes the face of warfare, and trying to fight the old way will get you dead really quickly.
Kudos to Musk for pointing out that times are changing before someone has to find out the hard way. Just like General Braddock found out that donning red coats and marching down the middle of the road is a bad idea.

Because many of those in the audience understand what happens as soon as you get into real world situations. For example, your cell phone worked perfectly when you opened it up out of the box and for the most part it runs perfectly. Sadly, then you go into some buildings and you drop your phone calls or your data loses it's 4G/5G connection or it slows down. Try to use them in a sports arena with 30,000+ fans and it can be even worse.
In war we also have an enemy that will know we are relying on these comm links to fly and will work very hard to jam them. Jammed links means planes unable to fight the adversary and very easy to be hunted themselves unless we go full blown Skynet, which is a completely different hazard that few of us want to rely on.
So, Elon is a very smart guy who is very driven but he's talking about something that is NOT his area of expertise nor has he paid much attention to it. This fully explains the audience's reaction and his facial response.

Robert Fisher Musk doesn’t get enough credit. He just risked everything including money for his beliefs bye sending astronauts into space. $ means nothing to him, but everything for his plans. It’s a long process for his beliefs and life’s goals. Without him, we would not be advancing the way we are today. Next stop the Moon and off to Mars if he continues to succeed. Plenty of problems can arise in the programing and design phase which are either ignored or glossed over by internal political issues. The desire to replace human pilots is primarily one motivated by greed, as it presents an opportunity for airliners to spend less money on experienced pilots and instead opt for a pilot they can pay less because they have less training.

actually instead of dogging on Elon Musk if you would have seen further comments that he's made in the past you would know that he is correct in his statement. sure no military officer wants to be told that their job is obsolete but at this point in his view it is. Elon Musk said in the past that are fighter jets are the best in the world but they are only as good as a human body can withstand the G-forces when applied in a dogfight or dodging a missile intercept. a drone style fighter jet could actually Dodge a missile but human would be killed in the movement maneuver to do it. When you put a human behind the controls of a get it is an offensive munition JET. it becomes a fighter jet. What Elon Musk has said in the past that we need to convert fighter jets to drone Fighters, fighter jet raptor is capable of three times what a human body can withstand. so in essence Elon Musk is correct.. by turning the Raptor into a drone fighter giving it the ability to automatically maneuver to avoid any Munitions or assault. no man fighter or missile would be able to intercept it. because the jet would be self-aware to if something Targets it, from hundreds of miles away it would know. of course Air Force pilots would still be flying them but if something was to intercept them it would automatically. respond to that threat, before returning control to the pilot... TOUCH'E ELON......

It was obvious to him that the old-fashioned methods of fighting air wars is over, and the era of drones in combat is already here. Mr. Top Gun had to know that, too. Men like Musk don't have the time or inclination to wonder "what other people may think" of what they plan to do, they simply DO it. Drones can be jammed -- and combat technique can move faster than programmers can possibly imagine. Look at WWII on the Eastern Front. Both sides used relentless innovation. If you were out of the action for even ten-days tactics had changed enough that you had to be re-schooled by your chums. One American paratrooper had been with his outfit from Normandy to Belgium. Wounded, he missed the Battle of Bastogne. When he came back to his own squad, his peers regarded him as virtually alien. So much had happened -- he'd missed their climatic battle. So much had changed that even their basic battle gambits had changed.
Drones and drone warfare work when change comes at a slow and moderate pace, when tactics and countering tactics evolve as slow as the Age of Sail.
BTW, America lost one of its most sophisticated drones to Iran. They spoofed it. They used the same gambit seen in a James Bond film.
All modern drones are vulnerable to the Bond/ Iran gambit.
Drones are EXTREMELY vulnerable to spoofing. They have ZERO judgement.
That's why the USAF general was not stressed at Elon's preposterous assertion.
Terminator III also showed what happens when you take humanity out of the decision loop.

The age of the low skilled worker is ending right now. At the earliest we can argue it ended 10 years ago. So for someone to say in 1980, "the age of the low skill worker is over," they would be wrong. Too early by 30 years. Totally prescient and correct in that regard; yet, incorrect. A guy in 1980 could've still made a career in manufacturing. He'd be struggling to find work now, but at the same time he'd be 60 years old and on his way to retirement. Same goes for jet pilots.
In 40 years, AI will be able to interpreting symptoms/charts/scans and make inhumanly accurate diagnoses. Robots will be doing surgery with incredible speed & precision with near zero invasiveness. Such tech already exists in low volume, just like drones.
But being a doctor will remain a top paying career for at least 2 more generations. The first generation will feel almost no effects of the tech, as the tech is growing as they advance in their careers. They remain a step ahead of the tech. The second generation will have to adapt a little more, but hecause of red tape and resistance to adoption, as is prevalent in the government approving biotech, a second generation of doctors will be able to squeak by just fine.
It is not until the third generation that there will be true competition between human doctors and tech doctors. And so to say "the age of human doctors is over" is simply incorrect.

Actually large manufacturers have robots since mid 70s. They said it's to stay competetive. In fact they made building cars cheaper. But this meant only more money for them and shareholders. Obviously no mass produced model today is worth more than a about 15 percent the price tag.

Elon is calling it like it is. In his mind, he sees advanced stealth drones that can do Mach 6, fly into space, perform bombing missions, air superiority missions and reconnaissance. The drones will be able to pull more Gs, won't require life support and a cockpit, will be smaller, and use less fuel. Drone "cockpits" will be supercomputers that can calculate aerial maneuvers, targeting solutions, and fuel consumption, far better than a human. Drones won't need sleep, can't be intimidated, suffer fatigue, experience fear, can't be captured and tortured, and there will be no funerals if they crash. Human pilots require years of training, and must continuously fly, in order to maintain or improve their skills. Drones will be programmed to be perfect pilots from the moment of their construction. If a drone sits in a warehouse for two years, it will still be a perfect pilot when you turn it back on. In the end, drone fighter craft will cost less money. It's so totally obvious to Musk. He's just waiting for everyone else to do the math and come to the same conclusion.

You like the idea of becoming one with the machine and pitting your skills against enemy pilots.
