- This is a review of LEGO Ninjago set 71774 Lloyd's Golden Ultra Dragon! This set contains 9 minifigures: Golden Oni Lloyd, Golden Kai, Golden Jay, Golden Zane, Golden Cole, The Crystal King, 2 Vengestone Brutes, and a Vengestone Warrior.

It really feels like Lego is going all out this time. Like almost no expense was spared, whole ton of brand new pieces and new colors for old pieces, new prints, all the gold, just went all the way
And new translucent pieces.
Must be because (it's speculated that) this might be Ninjago's last or second to last season
And 3 different, new variants of the main 4 ninja

Coming from someone who deslikes ninjago, I feel that Lego is finally making good minifigure designs. I love the purple dragon minion minifig heads, but the ninjas look generic as always, and the dragons still feel pretty cheap. I like it's striking pose, though.
For a decade-long series, I hope Ninjago steps on the right direction, because no unlicensed lego theme deserves to live THAT LONG without having either interesting builds that either hint about the lore or worldbuild (dragons and mechs aren't interesting) or either having bad/uninteresting designs overall.
The snake/samurai/skeleton beef that the ninjas had has gotten old by now, so a new villain that isn't human or snake looking is a nice refresher. In the end, I still think Ninjago is one of the worst lego themes, but it's my opinion after all, and I'm *actually very glad* to see Ninjago stepping into a decent direction.
We had amazing, but short lived unlicensed lego themes, so I'm pretty bitter towards Ninjago, especially because it won the competition against, in my opinion, the best unlicensed lego theme, Chima.
It's so weird that to get the most accurate golden weapons, it's:
2011 Sword of Fire
2015 Shurikens of Ice
2019 Nunchucks of Lightning
and 2022 Scythe of Quakes
You literally gotta go back in time to get the most show accurate GWs😑😑

Is there any difference between 2011 and 2015 shurikens? Also, which 2015 set are you referring to?

As overpriced as this set is, this set is still epic! I'm totally in for more golden ninjago dragons! Can't wait to get my hands on it!

The Ninjago Dragon team yet again delivers an incredible set. I love getting new set pictures and seeing what new dragon I’m gonna add to my collection. Not a fan of the price or the wings, but the shaping and building techniques are fantastic. I don’t have either of the previous Ultra Dragons, but I’ll definitely try to pick this up on a discount

@@XVitoloX Oh you bet. They are on discount pretty often if you know where to look. But you have to keep an eye open for it. Like keep checking multiple websites or a regular basis.

When I first looked at this set, I thought this was going to be another “skull sorcerer dragon” display set… oh god, this is awesome. I love that it’s so functional and posable while still looking amazing.

Something tells me the Oni Mask of Vengeance might be back. The design for Lloyd's Oni Mask seems very similar, and if I remember correctly, The Mask of Vengeance was the only one that easn't destroyed in Hunted. Either way, this set is really cool despite the high price
but remember Lloyd is part Oni, he could put on his Oni-like face as well as Garmadon

Great review, as always. I still think Lloyd's Legendary Dragon from the earlier wave this year is superior but this is pretty fantastic, too. Way overpriced, though.
The gold prints and transparent probs make up most of the price (and exclusive mini figures)

@@B_R_U_C_3 mmh I feel like it should be about 20-30 euro's, like he said, but that can be fixed with waiting a bit for a sale or discount. I did the same with loyds legendary dragon managed to get it a 30% price drop from 60 euro's to 42.. Come to think of it I bought all my ninjago dragons at discount prices.. It's worth the wait, because VIP points often only nets you a 5% discount on the total of all purchases. So generally VIP points are reserved for the more exclusive sets.

They should hav given Oni Lloyd a golden biker helmet so then it looks like it’s part of his head like they did with Omega from Moto, same goes for Garmadon. Also the golden cracks on the brute and warriors is actually Vengestone cracking through

I know I'm very late to this, but I have to say thank you so much for this review! I'm hoping to pick up this set on aftermarket soon.
Also, my sister and I have a headcanon that this dragon is the fusion of the Golden Dragon Ninja, so I imagine the technic pieces and function you pointed out to be parts of Zane.

Whoa, it appears Lloyd's samurai helmet sans Oni mask will finally allow me to put goggles or a windscreen on a samurai! I hope that new part gets used in other themes!

I feel the nunchucks should’ve been open at the top and have the chain there. Personally I’d like to see the chain built in and translucent blue
Regarding your dragon theory, at first, I thought it was just Wu turning himself into a dragon (The white underbelly combined with the gold looks like it represents sensei Wu), but now that you point this out, Wu and the other four ninja may have combined to form an ultra dragon, and they will fight alongside Lloyd (This looks like a final battle). Also, the tile design on the chest looks a bit like Wu's beard and some features look like the dragon armor.

its cool and i really like the new ninjago theme but i also expected to release a big crystal dragon as well....
As a person who's had this profile picture since 2018, I'm pretty sure that 17:00 (slightly before) those characters are Rs. it's a common symbolism in these sets and I believe it stands for the resistance.
And yes, I do get whiplash every time I see them in the sets. This is what I get for picking a Ninjargon character as my profile picture tough.

I just noticed that the same head layout for this dragon is the same as the legacy head placements, (and in the show, the 2012 head placements had an inaccurate layout.)
Everything in this set is amazing, but honestly I'm not feeling so strong about the new sword of fire and the nunchucks of lightning the original ones made for the minifigures are better.

I think the golden cracks you mentioned are most likely vengestone, it matches the depiction of vengestone in the show

As nice as the crystal king is like its amazing but the metallic gray over the color black only makes sense to me due to the vengestone warriors also being metallic gray but I think it just would've been better in all black
Which I mean theory time now that I think about it the overloads body could be made from vengestone so either way still really cool

The problem with this set is that for such an overpriced set, you would think that it would be very high quality. But the ugly jaw connection and the very noticeable gap that can’t be covered on the hip make it a lot worse

I just got this set and ill say this is the best or one of the best ninjago dragon I've ever seen. the part I dont like is that the trick they use in dragon heads doesn't look that organic but not that big problem.

So it’s like the season Hunted we’re they resist Garmadon’s rule
While i’m not familiar with the Crystalised season, I do love the new Scythe of Quakes redesign for this wave. The original one used in the pilot season and 1 and 2 felt short, and the Legacy one looked way too short and bumpy with the staff part of it. And the lightning bolt-like piece? Eugh. I know it was used as NRG Cole’s primary gold weapon, but that didn’t feel like a Scythe of Quakes variant to me, especially when the other NRG three’s gold weapons didn’t exactly resemble the original four. There was also Cole ZX’s primary gold weapon which had a scythe concept, but never felt like a scythe to me. So I do think this wave’s Scythe of Quakes is a neat improvement.
I agree basically the same with the Shurikens of Ice as the angled points look a little more accurate to the originals in the early seasons.
I don’t like how the chain of the Nunchucks of Lightning isn’t on the dragon’s jaw end of the nunchucks and I don’t like how it was the same with Legacy.
The Sword of Fire… what is that? I know it’s meant to look better with the crystal attachment… but what is that? I’m glad Legacy and season 10 in the show didn’t change anything.
