This is a super important topic imho because many beginners completely underestimate or outright ignore the value of printing. To me, printing is literally the other side of photography. Sure, posting things on social media is nice, but it's only in prints that photography truly comes to life.

For me, that's long been a problem with digital art. Making it physical.
Prints are...Prints. Which are fine. But photographs look better chemically printed, IMO, and a real painting or drawing is always better to hang than a print of a digital painting or drawing.

to highlight an implied point you made: paintings / non-realism in the same room is a great compliment to photography, unless it’s a gallery, mixing media is always the way, imo. Great work on that room!

Your photos look so good! I realize that if I am ever going to be a real artist, I must find the beauty in even mundane spaces, but- also, and this is the excitement of photography, go to the places that are so beautiful. I remember your video of making things happen no matter if the subject shows up, the trip is cancelled, or some other obstacle comes along. You just find something exceptional and shoot it and make another masterpiece. I love the colors in the living room, the incredible subject matter, and all your videos!

Another take on hanging art is to get your own photo printer and experiment on the printing side. You can get an A3+ printer without breaking the bank, and I have found printing to be another enjoyable aspect of photography. They won't blow you away like these acrylics from Whitewall and will be smaller of course, but it makes you edit photos in a different way to suit the environment they will be sat in. I took inspiration from Pete Souza's book on being Obama's photographer, and he used to rotate pictures in the Whitehouse every so often. I have started doing the same in my house, and for the ones that get put in a drawer it becomes a nice and tactile way to show pictures to visitors instead of showing your wider portfolio on a screen.
For the frames, you can mass buy cheap ones and try painting them. Also experiment with a glossy glass (or acrylic) or leaving that out and hanging a matte print.

G’Day Simon, new subscriber here from the Great Southern Land 🇦🇺.
Your RUclips channel came up on my feed just a couple of days ago, and they have been enlightening, encouraging, and informative at a level that I have been able to understand indeed.
I live in the country, in the southern part of the state of Victoria, and have been an avid but very, very amateur photographer, and have been running a Panasonic DMC FZ7 since 2010.
It has travelled with me to the UK, Canada, and China, and has served me well, and given me some wonderful photos, but I really love taking landscapes, and wildlife photos, and have been looking for something that is more up to date, with better quality, and abilities, but with a limited budget I have, I was encouraged by you saying not to be discouraged from buying secondhand equipment, and I am now looking for something that can fit my budget, and needs to be able to adorn my house with my own photos.
I have many photos that friends say are amazing, and should have them on the walls, but I fear they don’t have the quality to enlarge them enough for this, hence why I would love to be able to do that.
And after watching one of your videos on taking night sky photos last night, I stepped outside at about 11pm, and let my eyes wander over the Milky Way, and it was awe inspiring to think I was able to maybe get somewhere in the neighbourhood to your photo of the Milky Way.
    Thank you.

A little synchronicity in life Simon, no bull, I just got back from my local print shop to look at the results of a landscape shot I captured last October. The fall colours will work well in my living room. We decided to print on canvas and mount in a floating frame. This is one of those moments in life when you get to really see your own work come to fruition. What a great feeling. I always look forward to and enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing. 🙏 In just a few days I will get to live with one of my favourite shots and I think one of my best, if I do say so myself. Cheers. Take a gander at the classical orders of architecture. While overkill for many, understanding those ratios and relationships can really help one decide where to mount something in relation to the ceiling height and trim height in the space. Caveat, architects don't seem to pay attention to door and window heights being level anymore so this can be somewhat frustrating in modern homes.

I went big and printed 109 preprinted cards with my photos...pretty but done with a mat finish which wasn't correct. Anyway I decided to order the photos and make the cards myself. 600 cards later I am happy to say they are going on a craft sale table tomorrow on the island we live on. Lots of the vacation home owners are back for the weekend and it should be a good time. Just $10 for a table for 3 hours...no risk really for that...I have friends here going to the sale to buy some so I am pretty sure it will be ok. Also I will have a lovely binder to write down any islanders who want blow ups...I listened to you about the shots I chose. One accidental shot was a pair seals in a kiss pose and a baby popped up in the water in front of them with a splash..frozen very well with the shutter speed! I printed a good amount of those, my aurora borealis shots, birds, starts, marina, boats, and all kinds of flowers plus the sunset so dramatic of our view everyone loves here! Will have to respond to let you know it goes along with who ever reads this. I did a ladys hair for her wedding here yesterday just to help her. Life is what you make it!

11:42 A word of caution to those hanging objects on or close to fireplaces. I’m sure Simon has his chimney well designed to extract heat away from that front but some may experience that what they hang on there doesn’t last as long as they might think. Constant, although perhaps perceived as low heat will cause damage over time. Personally, not even in Simon’s case would I place that TV screen there either. I see from the mounted prints that they come with a solid rear frame. This again is of utmost importance over time to avoid warping in constant heated environments. Don’t skimp on this, you’ll save money down the line not having to repeat on “wavy” acrylic …

Thanks for a great video. I want to put up some wall photos in a very small room (10 ft by 12 ft.) Rather than large prints I’m thinking of a collage of small prints. I’m slowly picking the best shots from my 19,000 and the theme will be will be wildlife. You have given me the instigation to get this started. I’ll take a photo of the wall into a CAD program where I can experiment with number, size and orientation of the prints. I could even put actual photos in. Also, a Whitewall coffee table book is definitely on the list. I was looking around at options and now know where to go.

Great video Simon, as I’ve been wanting acrylic prints also but know it’s a lot more money. Had one done in stainless steel as it was a little less expensive. Photo was great, but because of location over fireplace in basement and a light from the ceiling was reflected in the print when on bummer. Now I’m wondering if the same thing will happen if I do acrylic. Extreme Imaging in Barrie Ontario is where I had my metal print done. Enjoyed your video on prints as well as all your video’s on wildlife & techniques in taking good photo’s.
Looking too travel next year to east coast with my wife and get some great wildlife photo’s and landscapes. All the best to you and family, cheers Brian.

A kind of related question: I do photo restorations, usually after scanning analog photos and slides to digital. Some of these photos stay digital, but some are printed after restoration. I am trying to come up with a consistent method to lighten the photos 'just right' going to print, as printing a digital photo to paper almost always results in a darker version. Matte paper soaks up more ink resulting in a darker print, and a finished (semi-gloss to gloss) paper stays a bit closer to the digital master. I have usually been going about this by boosting the mids a bit, so it looks a little too light on my monitor, but then generally pretty good as a print. But it's always a guess. So the end result isn't always quite matching my goal. I am wondering how the pros do this...hopefully take the guessing out.

I might try again using White Wall. When I sent photos off years ago, they would come back too dark, or the colors would be off. Even black and white photos would come back looking a bit purple, rather than true black and gray. I was using another professional printer, not the local pharmacy printer, so disappointing that I stopped having photos printed. For most of us, this is an extravagant expense, so when they get it wrong, ouch!

As for too dark, the culprit is usually processing them on a monitor set too bright. Set it at 80pct, not 100% brightness.

Simon, another great video and whole heartily agree on printing your great images. One thing I didn't catch in your video - do you prefer framing your print or frameless? What's your criteria for that?

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  5 месяцев назад +2

Frames for prints, frameless for metal or acrylic

Great explanation. Could you please create a video about exporting settings the photos that we want to print out?

Thank you for the competent and great tips and resource.
Though the lily way panorama IMHO seems a bit on the small side and a tiny bit high up. But that’s purely personal taste :))
Thanks anyway and congrats on the great photos and beautiful home!

I am learning photography and your videos are immensely helpful. I was wondering if you could make a video sometime about computer monitors--which ones on the market you have/recommend, what display settings to apply to the monitor to make it most conducive to editing, etc. I find that even though I have a 4k monitor, the image quality is not as crisp and the colors not as realistic when compared to my macbook. My desktop is more powerful but the screen isn't as nice! Thank you for your help.

I always wanted to print a REALLY big image, with REALLY high resolution. I've made images (with a 20mp camera) to over 200 mp, but printing really large is an expensive endeavor.... especially if one wanted it on aluminum or acrylic. By the way, I do a have a bunch of aluminum prints.... and a couple acrylics, but only up to a "small" 30 inch x 40 inch. I always wanted to do a 4 ft X 6 or 7 ft print, at 300 dpi (600 sized down to 300 would be even better ;) But we are talking Gigapixels, and a very expensive print !
There used to be a guy WAY back, by the name of Max Lyons, who made Gigapixel images and prints, with only a 6 mp camera :) He was the original stitching guru :)
Your prints look fantastic BTW :)

Hey Simon, I just found your channel. I am from NS as well, and I find great inspiration in your RUclips channel. I am just getting into the crazy world of Drone photography, and its made me realize how much I enjoy the creative process for photo taking. I just watched your video on how to get into the hobby, and I wanted to ask you what resources you use to find used camera gear? specifically camera bodies.
Thank you so much for what you do, and for bringing good attention to our province, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

I enjoy creating large canvas prints from photos I took on my foreign vacations to gift to my children. It's a way to cherish my memories and share the places where their inheritance has been invested. At least that's the way this sailor sees it ~~_/)_~~

My problem is that rarely have control over how my prints are displayed. For most exhibitions, you ship your framed prints or drop them off and the gallery hangs them, so you only find out where they're going to be, and more importantly, how they're lighted (and of course, reflections can be an issue) after it's probably too late to change anything (unless it's a solo show, in which case you still have to deal with logistics but at least you have more say). It's obviously up to buyers as to how they display works--I should tell them to watch this video (or add a note to the backer)! If I have control over placement, I'll just go by feel--it just has to look "right" (similar to composing an image).
I've yet to experiment with acrylic. Although that looks intriguing for certain images, I'm concerned about reflections (cleary an issue, as you point out). I'll have to check WhiteWall regarding lower-gloss options. Thanks for the tip. Do they manage the printing or do you send them a print which they mount under the acrylic, and in either case, is it considered "archival?"

I like the style of English country manors where a whole wall is covered in moderately sized pictures. But as I live in a small English house then I’ll still with a few 6x4 …

I'd say go for it. Cover a wall with photos or a mix of art. If you get tired of it, take it down.

The timing of this video is incredibly coincidental. Literally last night I was trying to get a picture printed and I spent ages going through articles on what to do/not do
