One final trick...your carry on luggage with camera kit is also full of....lithium ion batteries. They can't put those in the hold. Tell the staff that and they'll go straight to the next person

    • @mjpt57

I always worry about overhead space if I'm boarding late...so what I've done (since they always make that announcement saying space is full and they'll have to check bags at gate yada yada) is I'll almost always get an exit row seat, which is usually more leg room too, and I've found that if my boarding group says 9 (last) on my actual ticket...in their computer it often says 6 or 7 for exit row and they let me board earlier. Never would have known unless I asked, and it's a weird loophole. I'll also add in exactly what you're saying (asking nicely) about having all this expensive gear, but more importantly...tell them I have 8-12 lithium ion camera batteries that can't be checked and go under the plane. This ALWAYS does the trick! And when I ask nicely while groups 1, 2, or 3 are boarding...often times they just give me the wink and tell me to go right ahead! Being nice is key!

Fishing vests! I recently flew from China to Spain, and stuffed a load of gear including sketchbooks, snacks, electronics and chargers into a fishing vest. There was even room to spare, which could've accomodated my EF 24-70 2.8+adapter and RF 24-105 f4 if necessary.

Regarding baggage on airlines. Flying from Vancouver to NZ, on an Air NZ flight, the admin was done by Canadian airlines. They weighed EVERY piece of checked and carry-on luggage and with no flexibility they fined a large proportion of the passengers about $55 each because they were down to a few grams over. At the other end, Air NZ were far more flexible coming back to Canada and, I might add, far more gracious.

Thanks for sharing Simon. The way I travel to for instance Iceland: have camera inserts for camera and drone gear and indeed hang the camera with a not too big lens on my neck. Personal item is a soft bag with all LiPo batteries and stuff I need while seated in the plane, all other expensive stuff is in the carry-on suitcase. In addition I use the biggset possible duffelbag where I fit my 45 liter hiking bag in. This hiking bag is what I use on my day trips with a bladder style water reservoir. Thermos flask can be filled with socks in the plane. I carry all cables in a wallet style case and have chargers for wallsocket and car. Bonus: when not travelling alone, have a companion get the rental car while you wait for the checked-in luggage, this will save lots of time

You are killing it!!!! It is like I'm sitting in the same room with you.
For a charger in a car using the 12V, I just love my Hähnel Cube2 dual charger. I am no fan of the Canon blinking lights. Since it has a power adapter, I would bring it everywhere. I suspect that it charges faster than the ordinary Canon charger. Around one hour for two batteries in my car it seems.
Midnight sun does not necessarily mean daylight for photographers. I've just spent 1 month in Varanger, Norway and I think there was two nights with good light (sunshine).
It is important to test the gear before use!!! The Muck boots might not allow clothing inside. For some reason I have large leg muscles ( I don't exercise) which fills out my Muck boots even if they are two sizes too large. I did exercise and lost all the fat, but no muscles. Which means just sitting can be painful even on a padded surface after a while.
It is important to use clothing in bright colours so that the polar bear can find it's snacks more easily.
Thermos for warm drink/hot meal if it is not provided.
Credit card that works. Investigate taxation in case you need to buy gear (Svalbard is exempt from much taxation). Identify good shops in case of need.
Consider getting a mobile account (SIM card) because a local account is cheaper and might have better coverage.
Get at least one map app for your mobile device and make sure it caches the map data. Make sure you visit where you are going. It will then work when you are out of mobile cover. And it is great for planning.

Such timely video as I am leaving for Svalbard today. I cant read all comments but one additional thing to what u already have explained is i always wear my very old trusted photo jacket with literally 25 pockets big and sma. Which could easily fit up to 70-200 2.8 lenses, whch makes it easy to "hide" the lenses or camera bodies in plain sight. And it decreases the weight in the carry on shoupd that become a problem. Having too many batteries is also a valid issue to sway them from asking to check bag in. But in the end, i think they know all the tricks in the book and politeness and courtesy is the best helper! Hope to have a great time in Svalbard

Great advice Simon, my greatest fear is the dreaded carry on pack with all of my lenses and camera bodies (x2)! I have only ever been caught out once and forced to shed some weight. This makes the flight part very stressful indeed. In Australia, the weight limit is 7kg for domestic and Qantas has a limit of 10kg, which is a little more reasonable. I find it odd that they don't weigh the passengers though!! LOL! I also love using my AIR TAGS, they can't ignore that can they! I'm off to New Zealand in late winter (August) to photograph the southern alps and Fiordland.

Excellent video, thank you for answering my question! I also carry my camera with my 70-200mm lens around my neck (well, on my shoulder) to lighten my carry-on weight. In Europe, they sometimes weigh your carry-on suitcase at check-in (in order to get the coveted carry-on tag) but very rarely do they weigh a small backpack. (If you fly the same airline often, um, try to keep the tag in good shape on your bag...) Plus, I always make a point to be super nice to the check-in agents and flight attendants. And lastly, I carry my laptop in a "personal item" bag that looks suspiciously light. So far, so good! (But I am always super stressed anyway.) Cool tip with the extra seat for the the small African planes, that is good to know. Thank you and I am very much looking forward to your photos from Svalbard. Have an awesome trip!

As i travel for work, and sometimes bring my camera gear, your tips are very valid......my #1 tip is make sure your camera bag has a removable storage liner, preferably with a cover, this way you can remove the liner with your expensive lenses/camera[s], carry them on separately and send the chargers etc under the plane along with the backpack itself if need be. Tip #2, as you eluded too, carry your camera backpack on your back, do not hand carry it as this signals to the gate agent that you have a "carry on" and they are more likely to question it. Last tip, make sure your backpack or bag is no longer than 21 inches as this is the size limit for 90% of the overhead bins; if you go bigger and it doesnt fit your only choice is under the plane and because the flight attendants now know there is nothing you can do to stop it either.

my travel tips: 1) short of a hair dryer, all my electronics work on either 110v/60Hz, or 220V/50Hz, so you don't need a converter. all you need is the plug adapters for that country. 2) I made myself an electrical octopus out of 2 extension cords. its got 1 side where i can plug it into a plug adapter, which then gets plugged into a wall socket, and the other end has (2) sets of (3) sockets. it took a small amount of work to create it, but then 1 outlet lets me plug in 6 items. 3) when traveling on Zodiacs, a wet bag is a good idea too. super light, they keep gear super dry. 4) bring a small set of tools to tighten your tripod legs, tighten screws on lens mounts or fix some other gear you have. I also remove lens feet if possible, so that the lens packs more compactly. If you carry a knife, check local laws at the destination, and be sure to put it in checked luggage. 5) perhaps stating the obvious, Wool Socks! 6) mosquito repellent? DEET products work best, but can damage the finish on a camera. Permethrin(?) also works and does not damage gear. 7) never travel with the camera body on a long lens unless its outside a bag and on your side. I've seen mishandling result in vacation ruining damage. good luck and have fun.

Nicely done! Let me add a brief comment. We recently got back from three weeks in the UK. I had a converter and I plugged a power strip into it for my watch, phone , my wife's phone, and my battery charger. Unfortunately my power strip had a built in surge protector so when I plugged it into the converter in our first rental it read the different voltage and knocked out power to the house. I had to call the owner who sent his son out. It took us a while to figure out what was going on.

Thanks for these tips Simon. I like the idea of hanging a camera around my neck onboard the plane.
One option when you need to blow the weight limit on an economy ticket is to buy an extra checked luggage item allowance. That used to be quite cheap but post-covid isn't any more. Of course you need a good case.
Yes, where there's a landing on Antarctica and King George Is in an identified bird flu zone, you can't sit/kneel/put near wildlife or their tracks. That makes lens changes interesting. I'll be using a harness for a 600mm attached at the lens foot and a belt with a waterproof sack for a wide-angle zoom for landscapes.
Antarctic fly/cruise flights have a total luggage limit of 15kg and that makes packing challenging. I've got out of Sony entirely (back) to Nikon for the light and compact PF telephoto lenses. Z8&600mmPF&1.4xTC=3kg, compared with A1&400/2.8&2xTC=4.5kg. I get way more handheld shots that way too.
A hard decision is which lenses since you're so constrained by weight and bulk. On land with penguins, I mostly shoot at 100mm. From zodiac to penguins & seals on land, 400-560mm. Birds, as back home, 560-800mm.

It may sound ridiculous, but I always pack a small travel scale to weigh both carry on and checked. It comes invaluable when packing for small flights at the destination or return flight home.

When I travel domestically in the US most airport require you to remove camera gear from your bag and place it in a bin for scanning. I get around this by carrying the gear (camera and 500mm lens) on a Black Rapid strap that I can pull off quickly and place in a separate bin. When I get to the gate I put the gear inside my carryon. Save time and hassle.

I usually avoid low cost airlines and queue early for boarding. That said I’ve been always lucky, but the day I’ll be “in danger” I’ll try the excuse that it’s expensive gear and that I have Li-ion batteries in the bag that isn’t safe to check in… thanks for the video! Very useful as I’ll also travel for a nature photography trip soon and got some useful insights!

Hi Simon! For my trip in Iceland, the overhead compartment was full. But because my gear backpack was full of batteries, the crew didn't want to store 7 batteries in the hold. So they take out luggage with clothes from another person and put my gear backpack in the overhead compartment. Easy win 😅

We all have the same concerns about gear while flying. One of my biggest concerns is airlines losing gear if I'm forced to put it into checked luggage. I have specialist photography insurance, but it doesn't cover loss. Thanks for the link to the lenscoat neoprene covers. Just what I need.

We are heading to Svalbard for an expedition in mid June.
My biggest anxiety is the camera bag and flights.
Our recent trip to Africa was fine but I feel Scandinavian Airlines will be stricter, but then again Australian carriers are fairly strict with only 7 kg
Hope to see some of your experience before we depart.

Great video. Funny you should suggest an extension cord. The first time I brought one, I thought I was being silly. Now I won't travel without it! Some places only have one available outlet that's nowhere near a suitable place for charging gear, and an extension cord solves the problem without taking up much space or weight.

Ive traveled all over the world back and forth. The one thing that will save you and everyone else stress is to have a small ziplock bag in your pocket where you can empty the contents of all your pockets and store them in this little bag while going through the security gate. Belts, pens, coins, passport, etc. No need to figure out what to take off when being scanned through security. you could also put this ziplock in your backpack. Do this before getting to the security checkpoint. then once you are at the gate or even already on the plane you can rearrange your stuff back in your pockets for the next leg or final destination. Nobody likes waiting behind the novice traveler who forgot that they had a water bottle full of water and a pair of nail clippers in their pocket.

concerning small planes. A fishing vest with big pockets may be useful to hold lots of small dense gear like batteries and power packs not to mention a lens. You can probably wear it under a windbreaker/raincoat/nylon shell that you'll be taking anyway so you don't make it obvious what you're doing. No one, including airline personal, likes to be made to look foolish. When you get off the lane you can have the fastest weight loss ever!
    Enjoy the trip.

Btw, would like to warn people about charging the batteries through the USB, when I used to work for Sony service center as sony camera service tech (I'm a Canon shooter and love Canon's hardware built quality instead Sony's) , I've seen uncountable times people brought us the dead cameras after telling us after charge through the USB, camera will not turn on what so ever, I highly believe the unstable voltage / heat created causing some damaged to the mainboard, so usually I recommend people DO NOT charge the battery through USB even it can. Happy shooting!

Simon, I look forward to seeing your Arctic trip, especially if you give some of your trip colleagues a few tips/instructions on how to properly shoot wildlife almost as well as you in this extreme environment. Lastly, you will be carrying money, credit cards, passport, and possibly other documentation. They need to be handled and stored carefully as much as your gear. If your accommodations have a safe, use it.

I fly United and if you have someone in your party with an earlier group you can board with them. Their's a limit based on Ticket and/or loyalty program level. So if you have one person upgrade, 1 or 2 may be able to board earlier with them. (Make sure to look up the rules for your airline). also, I've made friends with people in line and ask to board with them. Look for fellow photogs.

I can only speak for major airlines operating in the US. But another point, while you're explaining about the expensive carry ons trying to board earlier mention you fly with a lot of batteries that can't be checked. Lastly, some airlines understand this already, and if you have some sort of media credential with you (typically not a business card), they'll let you board early as well.

I don’t have any experience with other tripods, so would a proper carbon fibre tripod (unlike the carbon fibre composite in the 7C) be more rigid?

At least here in Europe the lithium batteries are not allowed to be put in the cargo hold. So if you have camera with batteries and a laptop in your backpack, there is no way they can put it in the cargo hold. I also usually pay extra to get an exit seat and since on exit seat no luggage cannot be stored on the floor they have reserved overhead bins for people on exit seats.

new rules mean you cannot get anywhere near as close to the bears and wildlife as you used to...even a 200-600 on a crop body with a 1.4x is not enough reach... won't need a parka at that time of year, you can use
sunbathe on the deck in shorts on sunny days, goretex shells are the best with thin layers. Get apple airtags for all bags to track location while transferring
