  • ASHFIELD PARISH #1: ANNESLEY
Here we go then with Ashfield, a brand new area of Nottinghamshire for you all to feast your eyes on, but its going to be a very short series. Despite Ashfield having quite a sizable population, most of the people who live here can be found in one of two big unparished areas to the North and the South of a central band. Its in that central band that we find the parish of Annesley, located between the towns of Kirkby in Ashfield and Hucknall, and lying within the hidden valleys area of Nottinghamshire.
Annesley is a village that has a big history with coal mining - that much is obvious from the moment you arrive here. There are at least two memorials to the industry here, one a pair of winding wheels, the other a coal truck. Annesley Colliery was one of the most productive in the area, and provided employment for hundreds of local men. For 135 years, it churned out countless tonnes of coal, and was the last deep working coal mine in the Leen Valley. Coal mining was the most important piece of history here, but lets not overlook the rest of it.
You see, there was once a castle too, the remains of which can still be seen - if you know where to go. There’s also a massive hall, once owned by the Chaworth Musters family who have strong links to the Byrons of nearby Newstead Abbey. And there are two churches here, one with a roof, and one without.
    Let’s go, and discover why!

Glad you got safely over that road, at least you only had to cross one side😬 Annesley Hall breaks my heart. When the new roof went on we all thought finally it's going to be saved, but then it's just been left to deteriorate again😢

Annesley Woodhouse is where 2 murderers hid out in the woods back in 2004. One of them shot an ex-miner with a cross bow, the other killed his daughter in Huthwaite. The series Sherwood is based on these murders but not exactly.
