I feel like from all the reactors so far, you're the only one who got the sarcastic meaning of the verse in all american bitch and the transition to the big 'fuck that shit' in the chorus. I'm so glad
I'm a 42-year old man, and I love this album. The late 90s/early 2000s punk pop style in so many songs fills my heart with joy. I have a daughter who's around the same age as Olivia, and I find myself getting angry at the guys the sad songs are about. My top five: All-American Bitch - a perfect sarcastic commentary on what is expected of a woman in American society, with a great combo of 90s folk and 2000s rockin' punk pop Vampire - epic song, fantastic build, great lyrics, makes me want to do not nice things to the guy the song's about Making The Bed - heartbreaking and so relatable for so many people, and a bit of genius songwriting to turn the cliched phrase "You made your bed, now lie in it" into a gut-wrenching ballad Logical - another brilliant piece of songwriting that hits so close to home for so many people - I love the ways she managed to convey that feeling of being gullible in a relationship - 2+2=5, if the rain don't fall and sun don't shine - great lines The Grudge - another heart breaker - I have one relationship that ended badly due to something my ex did, over 2 decades ago, and I still relate to this song today - that last line, "It takes strength to forgive, but.." OOF I would say Get Him Back! and Bad Idea, Right? aren't exactly happy songs, but they're not really sad, either. They're both super fun bops, and Bad Idea, Right? is basically just a drawn-out joke with a killer early 2000s rock soundtrack. Get Him Back! is the perfect song to perform in a giant arena full of fans. You can see a bit of that in the little snippet of it she performed on the VMAs. There really aren't any bad songs on this album, and her writing is even better than it was for Sour. I loved pretty much all the songs - Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl is basically "Social Anxiety: the Song". Pretty Isn't Pretty is the 2023 installment of the recurring song about the unrealistic expectations that society places on looks, and how that effects women especially, and for me is up there with TLC's Unpretty and Christina Aguilera's Beautiful. Love is Embarrassing is another great piece of songwriting that says something that pretty much everyone knows but hadn't verbalized before - love IS embarrassing. Lacy is a mysterious piece, part jealousy, part idolization, with a floaty melody and very interesting vocal performance. It was almost in my top 5. So was Teenage Dream, another heart breaker, it's a devastating commentary on becoming famous as a teenager, and how it's impossible to live up to all the expectations that are thrown onto celebrities, especially as a teen. One final note, I read in a comment on another Guts album reaction that Olivia's dad is a therapist, so the "I am my father's daughter, so maybe I can fix him" line in Get Him Back! is HILARIOUS with that context. Olivia is gifted lyricist, who is getting better all the time. I have high hopes for her future career. Great reaction.
2:08 All American Bitch 5:58: Bad Idea Right? 8:29 Vampire 11:10 Lacy 14:59: Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl 17:52 Making the Bed 23:04 Logical 26:19 Get Him Back! 29:26 Love is Embarrassing 31:44 The Grudge 35:38 Pretty isn't Pretty 39:26 Teenage Dream Also, in Get Him Back, did you acknowledge the double meaning of the title line? She flips wanting to get back AT this guy and get back WITH him. It's a very clever idea
I love the line “I despise my jealous eyes and how they fell for you.” because it’s like the toxic and jealous side of her obsessing over this person that she hates.
Yes her writing is so complex is like a girl crush that she admires so much it turned into envy. It's just like get him back is like have him back but also get revenge like so many metaphors so many double conundrums its amazing
great video! my fav is defo lacy! i think it perfectly captures the coexistence of jealously and yearning in a competitive patriarchal society, the question of ‘do i want to be her or do i want her?’. also, as a fellow woman of colour like olivia, it also captures the jealousy of looking at/loving a white girl (skin like puff pasty, white like daisies)
thought was the one thinking 'pretty isn't pretty' sounds like an ending track of a teen romance movie that has a happy ending (while autumn in a street and the camera's slowly moving in a bird's eye view angle)
No definitely not. It’s Olivia obsessing over someone she’s jealous of and loathes. It’s definitely more of a jealously jealously vibe. She keeps pointing out everything lacy has in an almost loathing way. Especially when she says “This side of hell.” She loves the way lacy looks and wants to be her but it’s putting her through hell.
@@jayayj5574it could be either, could be both, or it could be none! thats the fun of analyzing songs! it could mean anything to any different person! let people have fun with interpretations ❤️
My top 5 has changed after a few listens but: 1 Logical 2 Teenage Dream 3 The Grudge 4 All American Bitch 5 Vampire 6 is a tie between Get him Back and Ballad of a homeschooled girl 😅
Right now these are my top 5 but this is definitely subject to change, this whole album was FANTASTIC! 1. Making the bed 2. Lacy 3. Vampire 4. Teenage dream 5. Love is embarrassing
My top 5 song from GUTS are: 1. All American B*tch ( this brings me back to the pop-rock songs from my time) 2. Pretty isn't pretty 3. Ballad of a homeschooled girl 4. Making the bed 5. Bad idea right? It might change but these are still my favourites (\/) (IvI) (>❤
Great reaction!!! For me Sour felt a bit like, after the massive success and virality of Driver’s Liscense, she had to rush to put out the full album, bc it was more one-note. Mostly ballads with a few up tempo songs. And many of the ballads felt too similar for me. This time around it sounds so much more diverse and beautifully put together story. If the first one was speaking to her generation, this one really solidifies her as the pop voice of her gen Z. That line abt “all the guys i like are gay” is such a funny and really a more relatable issue for teens these days, which is a great thing in itself obviously. Even though she references late 90s early 2000s teen pop-punk movies (10 things i hate abt you, Can’t Hardly Wait and Drive me Crazy come to mind) so much of the content is very contemporary teen life. And add to that her struggles with fame and that’s GUTS. I really loved this album and it reinforced my perception that Olivia is immensely talented as a musician and songwriter in her own right.
1. Making the Bed 2. Ballad of a homeschooled girl (I’m 30 and this is still so relatable to me 😭 I feel like being homeschooled a lot of my school life has still messed up my social life to this day) 3. the grudge 4. vampire 5. all-American bitch
My thought is that Lacy is not about a single person, but rather the image of a woman that is "perfect" and that she tries her best to match the perfection that society wants her to, and she knows it's not good to do that but has been conditioned to try.
Here we go- this was SOOO GOOD OML 1.) Teenage Dream (Never would've expected to like this SOO MUCH) 2.) All American B 3.) Making the Bed 4.) Vampire (still so good) 5.)Pretty isn't pretty YES? NO?

Lacy has strong bisexual energy, I agree
Listening to it for the first time I was like, this screams sapphic
No definitely not. It’s Olivia obsessing over someone she’s jealous of and loathes. It’s definitely more of a jealously jealously vibe. She keeps pointing out everything lacy has in an almost loathing way. Especially when she says “This side of hell.” She loves the way lacy looks and wants to be her but it’s putting her through hell.
