Congratulations Flight Test! Great way to show how starting by building and designing RC planes can lead to so much more! It is not just a toy, but a learning tool that can lead to some great careers. Keep up the amazing work!
Got my team accepted to Flugtag in Tampa for November 9th. You didn't need to give me plans. The materials you went over set us in the right direction.
I've been toying with using honeycomb cardboard in place of foam for larger scale aircraft as it is about the same weight as foam, or marginally lighter, but it is way more rigid. Slicing it span wise and also build in the aerofoil shape so the wing skin becomes a rigid surface
I left this channel about a year ago, I decided to take a look at how its been, well let's just say these guys should earn another 1 million subscribers!!!!
How much did the wing weigh? The whole plane? That wing worked very well - very stiff, no sign of bending or twisting. Scaling things up can be the biggest challenge, but I think you guys nailed it.
Because the wing is always in stall on that plane, I'd make the horizontal stab full flying. It will grab more air just before he hits the water and get some more distance. Some version of Horner tips on the wings will help too. Great job !!!
Even though, for me, it takes a long time just to build aFt style planes, i can't help but want to build balsa/ rib and srick stick style planes one day. All the structures and shapes are just so..., nostalgic.
You guys are awesome for sharing your methodologies to everyone, including next year's competition. Are multi-wings allowed? I think you could achieve much more effective wing area in a smaller span with a bi or tri-plane. You probably can reduce weight using and school tension wires instead of a cantilevered wing. cables are draggy, but that won't hurt you much at the low speeds. Of course you guys used building techniques that you use daily. it is amazing how quickly you put it all together. Victory at Flugtag after hosting a world record achieving Flite Fest. You guys are amazing. Keep it coming!
hey I'm 28 n have sum Grays, alot, lol, but remember the old guys were in it first and are always behind the scenes, it's kinda like our wives, behind the scenes but u no for a darn fact they wear the pants lol, same with the RC, but usually not a female lol always got that elder giving direction
So I really hope you guys are going to rebuild that thing and fly it again. Maybe this time off a higher cliff so you can actually fly it around a bit.
If you decide to try this again, run a sheet of your covering from the tip of the wing to the front of the tail. As long as your pilot can keep his feet out of the water, he can use ground effects to stay aloft longer.
Great job and video. If you save weight it would have flown a lot further. The box spar could have been hollowed out towards the wing ends, saving a bunch of weight, increasing the launch speed.
I'd say the opposite: this thing can glide really nicely. The problem is that it had too little speed at launch. They could not run. Maybe they needed some Jamaican bobsled dudes to run with it at the top! :)
Just read in the comments that you won both overall and people's choice...that's awesome! Just imagine how far you could have gone with more velocity at take off?
It would be nice to hear from Chad what it was like to fly it. Also, what did you learn from the flight. 100% success? Could it have flown further if your did X Y or Z. Thanks,
Im still going to make one of these. What is the plastic sheet you wrapped around the wings? You said it was monocoat but monocoat is a liquid that protects the floors. Thanks!
I know you said no plans...but you could do a mini version, something the size of a chuck glider and it could be the focus of a STEM project for schools to have their own Flutag, making gliders to carry a specifically weighted payload (something like a teddy bear or Alex's gorilla....)
Dear FliteTest, Over the past few months I have saved enough money to build one of these, and I am having a little trouble finding out how to make the wing template you used to cut out the foam. Everything else I have with me, but I cannot start the project without a template. if you could tell me where to find the dimensions of the template that would be great. I already tried DevWing but it does not work for macs sadly Thanks!
Is there a speed build kit coming soon? Seriously though, you should design a small one and sell the speed-build kit. I'd totally buy it. Call it the Miniatur Flugtagflugzeug.
Here's what I want you to do: Hire a parachuter. Drop him from an air baloon sitting in this thing. He glides for a bit and then bails and parachutes safely to the ground. That would be awesome.
Lots I blood and sweet went into it I can tell. Great work on designing it! Maybe next year you'll do better if u do it! Again great job! Just keep doing what your doing it's a great channel for rc lovers!
Very impressive!! You all worked as a team and it paid off. Hope you give it another go next year!
woah taofledermaus! all of my favorite channels are connected!
Damnit Jeff, do you watch every damn video I do. Steal my Sub list? Good vid on the chain reaction earlier.
glad to see you here.

So many good builders tried but FliteTest just simply nailed it.
Got my team accepted to Flugtag in Tampa for November 9th. You didn't need to give me plans. The materials you went over set us in the right direction.
Ya'll failed to mention you WON!!!! Nice job. I hadda go watch the whole thing.
KILLED IT! CONGRATS!
Hihi.... Totally awesome how Josh tries to pronounce Flugtag. I really love the insight-videos! Keep it up!!
I still want a speed build kit of this, I also want David Winstall to mount rockets on it
I've been toying with using honeycomb cardboard in place of foam for larger scale aircraft as it is about the same weight as foam, or marginally lighter, but it is way more rigid. Slicing it span wise and also build in the aerofoil shape so the wing skin becomes a rigid surface
you guys should put a tiled plan of the rib section on your site for download, that would be awesome
Looks like a very advanced Ugly stick. Unreal team work.
Hahahaha good one!!😜
Congrats on 500,000 subs! Looking forward to seeing more ludicrously good FliteTest content!!!
OK now this need's to be made RC..
Make it Rc. Or just put a motor on it and fly it
yeah, I really want to see this flown RC, twin engine should do it nicely.
Unfortunately we would have to MAKE another one! ;) Mainly because they crushed the other one at Flug Tag! ha
S.O.
Sweet... Soooooo we should see a video in... what... about 2 months..?? :) :)
Is that part of the contest? I mean, I know most of them are destroyed by the crash, but yours seemed to land relatively unharmed...
I left this channel about a year ago, I decided to take a look at how its been, well let's just say these guys should earn another 1 million subscribers!!!!
You came back. Thanks guys
You guys should have used clear mono-coat, its lighter than the dyed stuff.
What's the mono coat ?
Awesome video. Congrats again on winning.
Congrats on 500k!
Love what you guys do. Keep up the great work.
flugtag in german literally means flight day if my school boy german is right.
it is
Correct :)
yes it does ;D
ja das stimmt
yup

Very impressive ............. great work .

That was awesome, great job on the build
Some of us are waiting for FT to do something Giant Scale. Not sure if this qualifies. ;) You were starting to generate some good lift there. :)
Awesome per usual!
this is awesome guys!!!
OMG I learned a lot from this video, THANKS.
I did not know how simple it is.
Again thanks
Nice job!!! Congratulation...
can you guys please build some sort of glider attachment for a bike
You guys are awesome for sharing your methodologies to everyone, including next year's competition.

You guys are awesome keep the videos coming BROTHER...👉👉👉👉
brilliant flying.
Hey, an old guy! (Background Bob) Yay!
hay im an oldddd guy too
Same here and love it.
I thought Flight Test was a bunch of young-ins. I had no idea an old guy was behind the scenes. It's good to see someone with gray hair.
hey I'm 28 n have sum Grays, alot, lol, but remember the old guys were in it first and are always behind the scenes, it's kinda like our wives, behind the scenes but u no for a darn fact they wear the pants lol, same with the RC, but usually not a female lol always got that elder giving direction
hahaha im old enough to be youre daddies greatgrandfather ahahah
You guys are awesome! Well done.
Full size rc build now please!
So I really hope you guys are going to rebuild that thing and fly it again. Maybe this time off a higher cliff so you can actually fly it around a bit.
You guys are amazing
Simply brilliant.....
I think you can make one that will fly even further! Will you be in the contest again?

so cool, love your video
What song is at 1:30? If its a flite test song i'd like to buy it.
Darn no speed build kit! Need you turn it into a powered ultralight!
i was there! i had no idea that that plane was yours, but I knew it was going to go well!
Cool! The jump from R/C to hang gliders/ultralight sailplanes isn't that huge is it?
NICE!
Where can I get the wing profile diagram?
I can always trust +FliteTest to do flugtag properly!
Was that a big FT Arrow I saw in the shop? I love the mini arrow. Are the plans for the big one available?
Where, when? How did I miss it again? Is it possible it was an older Versa Wing?
It was!
JB
+Josh Bixler thx Bixler are plans on the site?
Not yet as far as I know. But having it on display like that means it's at least in beta testing, so it won't take long :)
devwing???? yeaaaa finally my 1000 inquiries answered thankssssssss
Great job and video. If you save weight it would have flown a lot further. The box spar could have been hollowed out towards the wing ends, saving a bunch of weight, increasing the launch speed.
That seems like a lot of work for what looks more like a controlled fall than a flight.
A bit more launch speed and a little headwind, then it would have actually flown.
Was there much damage to the plane? Or did you just trash it after the one flight?
Redbull destroys them ( i think)
Yes. It's in the Flugtag rules, so people don't put too much money into the aircraft, because they don't get it back.
Excellent !
I bet this will be awesome if you put a motor n it.... Great work guys
Way to show those guys how it's done!
How many aircraft engineers do you have working there? Simply amazing. Geekin out ova heeyuh.
Great distance, good airfoil. But, I NEED to know if this glider wings will actually fly further than your Flugtag flight.
you can run, but you cant glide^^
That is the best!!!!
I'd say the opposite: this thing can glide really nicely. The problem is that it had too little speed at launch. They could not run. Maybe they needed some Jamaican bobsled dudes to run with it at the top! :)
+1

Are you guys going to do a video on the new 210 quadcopter frame?
I have not seen a Flite Test product without review and build video. So the chances are pretty high :).
Is this going to be a swappable?
are you going to turn it into an rc after the flutag?
Just read in the comments that you won both overall and people's choice...that's awesome!
Just imagine how far you could have gone with more velocity at take off?
What is the name of the software they used to design the wing?
Its Josh Scott again!
Can you make a video about how to design and build a wing because we need that for a project in school you guys did amazing
he mentioned the software he used in the video.
WickdPerfekT do you know software name.
I need that software. I hope you can help me :)
he says at 2:35 it's called DevWing.
Congrats on the win! Did any of it come back with you?
Rumors are that Chad stole the tail. ;)
Ha Rumor is true...but...the tail is actually here at HQ in North Canton ;)
I like your channel's profile picture, lost is my favorite tv series
It would be nice to hear from Chad what it was like to fly it. Also, what did you learn from the flight. 100% success? Could it have flown further if your did X Y or Z. Thanks,
I wonder if Rotor Riot will put up an episode on this too?
Amazing!
That is amazing !!!
I would love it if you put all the measures for it
It's awesome
Awesome!
Australia has this at Moomba called the birdman rally! last 30-40? years looks like great fun, you blokes put a lot of $$$ into yours!
Im still going to make one of these. What is the plastic sheet you wrapped around the wings? You said it was monocoat but monocoat is a liquid that protects the floors. Thanks!
MonoKote.
+FliteTest: What is the rear boom made out of? Fiberglass or carbon fiber?
I know you said no plans...but you could do a mini version, something the size of a chuck glider and it could be the focus of a STEM project for schools to have their own Flutag, making gliders to carry a specifically weighted payload (something like a teddy bear or Alex's gorilla....)

Is there a speed build kit coming soon?
Seriously though, you should design a small one and sell the speed-build kit. I'd totally buy it. Call it the Miniatur Flugtagflugzeug.
Flugtag is German (but also used in Swissgerman and Austrian) and means Flightday. PS Congrats for 500k subs!!!!!!!
hey flite test can you explain in a video how the wings must twist for the plane to turn
Just a weird question here. Did you salvage the aircraft for later inclusion in the aeronautical museum?
No, it was destroyed. But I've seen Chad walking around with a tail section.
Tempting to find a huge hill and launch it. It looks like it has great potential as a maned glider.
So is the spar on this solid wood or plywood paneling with a foam core?
Where do you find 1/2 inch thick foam??? Thank you, Matthew
What airfoil was used? It seems pretty thick
how many rolls of covering did you use for the whole craft?
Just curious, what did you do with the plane after the event was done?
Flugtag rules state that all the aircraft are destroyed.
In god's name... WHY?, I guess so you can't use it (or parts of it) in next year's "Flugtag"?
maybe but i also think its so that people dont spend a lot of money on them, why would you if it just gets destroyed
Would the plane fly if you took it off something much higher?
Here's what I want you to do:
Hire a parachuter.
Drop him from an air baloon sitting in this thing.
He glides for a bit and then bails and parachutes safely to the ground.
That would be awesome.
I really want to build one of these! Any suggestions? Especially how to make the spar template as I do not have a laser cutter.
Ruler & protractor.
next up; will it fly as an RC? ;)
Lots I blood and sweet went into it I can tell. Great work on designing it! Maybe next year you'll do better if u do it! Again great job! Just keep doing what your doing it's a great channel for rc lovers!
Lots of* my bad lol
Try flying it from a big hill i wonder how far you guys would come then
Could you have used a delta wing or a bi-plane set up ?
Curious how much the thing weighed fully assembled?
I'm just asking, but what would it take to mount an engine to this and make it fly?
Super cool
would like to see you rc that thing
