Excellent design guys! You could have gone even a tiny bit more forward with your CG on the 40% model. That was an impressive glide. Thank you for advancing flight!
Awesome! I was watching "the best of Flugtag" and one plane was mounted on a "catapult" trolley that went twice as fast as the pushers walking speed. About 2/3 the way through, they pulled a handle and the plane shot off a rail on the trolley. Good luck!
Sadly all forms of mechanical or kinetic lunch, have been written out in the rulebook. It’s much more limiting then previous events. Lower dock in smaller wingspan. But will do our best to get as much speed as possible. :-)
@@FliteTestthis reminds me of ski jump events where they shorten the downhill length to keep the landings in a safe zone. Maybe the reason is similar. They have a limited space for the landing zone. Has a lot of Promis for sure, however, I think you guys were in ground effect the entire time, You might wanna test it going off something with a much steeper decline to get out of that ground effect, if it glides nicely then, you 100% have a winner.
I recommend the pilot be able to run the plane off of the edge like a hang glider. If you use a launch cart I recommend making it uniformly collapsible so it can drop just before the edge. You don’t want the launch cart to impart a nose down moment on the aircraft when you reach the edge.
No no no tower like the liberator glider.. the added hight made all the difrence.. And human lunch weights over the front dragging the whole Thing up to huge speed.. And speed is all
The design of your plane is great, but I think one of the ways to win is to build a "launch tower" to increase your height over the water, and if possible, some sort of catapult to increase air speed.
Your video showed up out of the blue on my feed. I said "Why not?" I very occasionally check out the Flugtag events, but I also used to go to Oshkosh for their annual fly-in event (I live over a thousand miles away from that, now, so... not in the cards anymore). Those were good days. Anyway: looks like you're on the right track for a winning in Flugtag! As noted by a colleague in the video, "If we can go as far as the model did, we got this!" (Or, you know, words to that effect). Lookin' good, guys! I went ahead and sub'd and hit the bell button-- I want to see the finished product WIN!

It seems like a flying canard design would be better here. More use of life, and it'll be in ground-effect much sooner, so will level the craft quicker
I am very curious how Your design will perform. I wish for the best headwind, cool head and great intuition of the pilot and strong legs for the pusher team!
Guys, you know Peter Sripol, he's worked with you. Check out his iterations of electric ultralight - he abandoned the biplane idea pretty fast. Two wings generate a lot of drag but not too much lift. Parasol or high wing configuration would be best (like fokker D.VIII, single wing mounted on struts). Another upside of such configuration is that you could use cables or struts to reinforce wing by attaching them to wing and fuselage, it'd save a bit of weight too since you wouldn't need as durable spars. Also I'd go for openwork tail construction to decrease weight as much as possible, possibly do it with CF rods (unless they're forbidden) and shift CG strictly with pilot, not extra weight, but I guess with a plane so light as long as the pilot sits where CG should be it should be fine
Get the cg "close enough", enough muscle to push or pull it and it'll have a nice flight. If you want to see how far it can go, get the 100 lb young lady with blonde hair to pilot it. Really a great design Flite Test. AirHammer out!!
All about launch speed to be above the stall speed. Your launch platform should be just as important as the plane itself. That and you need a 100 pound friend to win.
Make a 2 or 4meter 6 to 12foot lunch Tower.. like the ""liberator"" used.. Use over the front launch human weights.. Make a weel on a triangel to keep launch string off top deck ... if launch pad is duppel as long as the distance to water from deck .. make a 1 turn on the human Wright.. pull dobbelt lenght 2x speed
Keep in mind that a small breeze would be the scale equivalent of a small gale. 😛 You might want to focus on designing a launching mechanism (if it’s allowed by the rules). The more momentum you can gain on launch, the more you’ll have to work with in the air and airspeed for controlling the glider. Maybe your team jumping off the platform could act like a counterweight to launch the glider, sort of like the Wright Brothers used for their early planes. Alternatively you could build a tall launch platform to give you a little extra height to work with, though it might be harder to push due to weight and air resistance.
You could add some vortex generators to the edge of the wing for better better lift at low speeds and make the plane require less speed to make enough lift to fly but at the cost of some drag
I built a homebuilt aircraft called the Dragonfly (back in 1980) and There was an aircraft called "Hovey Whing Ding II" that is very similar to your design. Great job!
I don't know if this would work. But maybe to prevent pilot error you should test your guy on a zipline. Or him up with a bunch of tranquilizer so he would be super relaxed.
the issue is not really the aircraft, its launching below stall speed. if you can rig up a few pulleys with 2:1 or 3:1 purchase and hook them over the lip of the launching platform then pull a rope get your thingy going faster that will help a lot. or dive immediately and trade height for airspeed. otherwise you're just falling with style.
@@pezpengy9308 Well as some teams seems to have designed and built their kites the night before while under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol I'm impressed that a lot of them don't loose their wings before falling off the ramp.

if you make a cart that the pilot can run off of and with the cart being pushed by the rest of the team you will get a much higher launch speed without any mechanical devices. The length of the cart needs to be long enough to get 4 or 5 steps for the pilot. also make the cart as light as possible too.
Loved hearing about the Sky Pup as I helped build one and scourer the internet for anything built using foam . That's how I discovered Flight Test and glad I did.
Be careful with the all flying tail at low speed. If you hold the stick back at low speed you run the risk of holding the tail fully stalled. So the no elevator control until you let the stick go forward to unstall the tail.
Just remember the old design adage of, K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple St_pid. But it is looking great. One thing have you thought about building your own launching cart custom to your aircrafts lift geometry and possible atmospherics? Just a thought.

Its looking promising! I agree with changing from a negative wing stagger. I'm not totally convinced that my reasoning is valid, though. Is there a reason you didn't try to go with a longer skinnier wing on a monoplane design to increase the aspect ratio, decrease the drag and maximize the ground effect for this aircraft?
To save weight, make the tailboom triangular instead of square, it'll be stronger and lighter.
Same, I used this design on my glider. It’s really stronk and ultra light. It only broke at the glue joint connecting it to the main fuselage.
