I think the main problem with 4 to 7 is that they caused Saw's kills to go from creative with all the different traps to generic stabbings and shootings, the flashbacks went from showing how Jigsaw set certain things up and recruited different people to just convenient excuses to keep Tobin Bell and the John character around without resurrecting him because Saw isn't a supernatural series. "We can't bring him back so let's show how he put together different tests for his apprentices to carry out after his death." Hoffman going from random shifty cop who pocketed a piece of a trap and only appeared in one scene to secret apprentice they scrambled to connect to John was stupid. You can set up minor characters to become major ones later on but they have to have more than one scene. That was also a problem I had with the "Mrs Spool is the killer" part of Psycho II and the retcon that she was Norman's real mother. She only appeared in 2 scenes before the reveal where Norman first gets his job at the diner and when he quits after Mary writes the note supposedly from Norma that makes him quit. Lila Loomis should have been Psycho II's killer and had it been that her sister being killed by Norman and Sam dying drove her mad and when phoning Norman posing as his mother and appearing at her bedroom window in a dress and wig didn't work she'd kill people and try to frame Norman for their murders.
My favorite moment was whe Jigsaw told Mark that he didn't like to take credit for inferior work. I thought this a remark on James Wan's thoughts on the Saw sequels.
What a trooper. Bitched and moaned quite a bit but totally understandable since Cody isn’t a Saw franchise fan. Plus it’s what we’re here for. The Cody Leach Saw series is almost complete which will round out my playlist nicely.
I love Saw V, it's my favorite in the series next to 1,3,4,6. I liked the Strahm vs Hoffman chase. John forced Hoffman to become one of his apprentices, because he knew that Hoffman's "trap" was not one of his own, he threatened to expose Hoffman as Seth Baxter's killer.
He is by far. I loved Strahm though, and the hero Detective in the Final Chapter. Hoffman was such a great villain and so sinister. Your not suppose to like him :D. But I do.
I was into Saw V because I was on the side of Agent Strahm and generally on the side of the police throughout the series. They didn't give him a whole lot of depth, but, seeing him try to avenge Agent Perez made me care enough to see him try and bring down Hoffman. I definitely liked the Fatal Five game too, but, it could've been a bit executed better. I love the opening and closing scenes, probably my favorite combination of the two (The Pendulum is my standalone favorite opening). Overall, I've got a soft spot for Saw 5, but, I know it's not one of the better movies in the franchise.
That doesn’t make sense, genius. That would be to promote their product, a razor. Clearly Cody doesn’t use one, thats a beard on his face!! Why promote dollar shave club when he hasn’t shaved in years?! You attempted to make a smart and witty comment but you failed in my opinion
Saw V is my favorite Saw and favorite game setup. Really clever traps and cool and connected players. My only complaint was: why the hell they didn't just dragged the girl they killed in the bathtub to the next room after they found out they'd need blood? They had plenty of time to walk through all the previous traps but couldn't do the 1 smart thing? 😂
This is my third favourite Saw movie, but I’m perfectly accepting of people who think that it’s bad. I’m not the biggest fan of Hoffman either, but I still enjoy this one. There’s not really a Saw movie that I don’t like, to be honest, but I’ll admit that The Final Chapter is definitely the weaker entry in the series
I still have fun with this movie but 6 is waaaaay better! Each movie starts out right where the last one left off so at least the story continues, you can’t skip any of them!
Totally agree mate. The Hoffman character has NO redeemable traits and honestly, Costas Mandylor just did not seem like he cared in any of them. Just there for a paycheck.
So glad to see this review series back on track! Saw V not my fav either but it’s better then 3D imo. I’m admittedly a Hoffman fan 😁but I never cared for Straham who is quite popular in this franchise. I have no idea why cause he just wanders around the whole movie speculating and ultimately accomplishes nothing. His deaths one of my faves though 😂 Can’t wait for your ranking and from what I hear,Spiral sounds pretty meh. Big surprise.
Honestly they kind of had too much happening for a Saw movie. You could easily cut the 5 people game and nothing of consequence would happen to the main characters. It’s like it could have been it’s own movie. I wouldn’t mind a Hoffman backstory with people he went after while Straham pursued him. That could’ve worked.
most series are in a weird spot by the 5th because they are all out of ideas and new directors come in. lol saw 5 was ok but it was clear they didnt know where else to take the story
@@mrhorrorjunkie7873 Kind of hard to forget that one when Cody hated it and I find it abysmal as well given it's the worst Chucky movie and killed Chucky at the box office.
Ive always liked the cat and mouse type aspect between Strahm and Hoffman in this movie, think its actually pretty well done. But the actual main game is horrendous. Would give it a 2.5/5
For me Cody i can answer why I love the saw franchise...3 things- The tension, the traps, and I was always a fan of seeing how the ending brought everything together but yes I can see why alot of ppl think the movies after the first few are trash.
Saw 5’s issues are in the opening the pin holding the guys strap disappears at points, the blood is pink at some points and cgi gore at the end, and the traps don’t fit in the movie so well, 8/10 7 place in my saw ranking
This one is amount my least favorite due to the group of characters that were put to the test but part 6 which is my second favorite saw movie, I think you’ll have a blast with
I thought the group was pretty great. Most of them played smart and analysed their surroundings etc which most of the movies the people just scream and panic
4:58 I still say they should have ended the series at III. I know what they're trying to go for in IV onwards is that even though Jigsaw and Amanda are dead they've inspired other psychos to keep the tests going but the level to which John can plan and predict things is ridiculous now and they keep adding more unnecessary shit to his backstory like in Jigsaw with the whole "Logan accidentally labelled his X-ray wrong so his cancer wasn't diagnosed in time" and him supposedly having a nephew who died when he was sold an unsafe bike even though there's no mention of him having any siblings or nephews and nieces in the previous 7 films. The constant new reveals of "secret apprentices who were there all along" is pushing it too.
Saw 5 is easily the worst saw movie IMO. Half the movie is a flashback sequence that I could give a fuck about and the traps are dogshit. Bottles on the ceiling? Crazy cool
I'm glad to see your series continued. I really like Saw 5 , less so than 4, my order of ranking pretty much goes 1,2,3,4, 5,6,7, jigsaw. I agree Hoffman is obvious bad guy, but I kind of like him lol
This one was my jump off point, I kinda checked out after the third one but I went and saw the forth because it was a Friday and I ain't have shit to do but right around the time this one came out I didn't really care about the franchise anymore. I ended up watching it once and didn't have a desire to watch it again.
Did you shed a tear while uploading 🤣 Is this the one with the pink blood? All I remember is that this is where I lost interest in the franchise, or what little interest there was left. Anyway, always a pleasure to see you review bad movies!
Yeah, Hoffman was pretty dang unlikable. His perpetually smug expression and the fact that he got away with brutally killing so characters (at least until the end of Saw VII), but in a way that's what got me invested enough to see Saw V through VII despite their flaws. I wanted to see the hammer of justice finally come down hard on this guy. ... It would have been funny if such a pale and wispy-looking dude like WIlliam Easton had survived Saw VI and ended up being the guy who exposes and/or takes down Hoffman, when the determined but foolhardy hero of Strahm completely flubbed it.
I use to not like this movie a whole lot but after my recent rewatch it moved up a few places for me. This is one of those franchises I just completely suspend disbelief and enjoy
I liked Saw 5. I thought it was really fun and had a fun plot to it!! I loved the Agent vs Agent battle going on here, and I thought it was well paced and I like Hoffman. He has this onscreen charisma to him that gives him this likeability that I can’t turn down. I think this is a movie that was fun!
Saw V next to IV was my least favorites. But for me VI really made up for it. We are all different in opinions. 5 really did make it seem like they were crapping all over what Jigsaw intended in the first place. But 6 was an improvement with me. Mostly because the twists were so much better. AGAIN that's just me. Lol
So, while I was scrolling through RUclips tonight, started seeing reviews for Spiral, which made me think, Did Cody ever finish the Saw movies? Guess that answers that. 😉😂 And this one, and Saw 6, I know I've seen them, but in all honesty, can't say that I remember much about them, unlike the earlier movies or Final Chapter, not a whole lot of this went into memory. 🤷
This is one of my favorites, and mainly because of the whole story with the 5 people in the 4 rooms, just genius how the whole idea behind it was thought out, and how they are supposed to work together. The first traps with the wires is just chilling, and the second one so simple yet so typical how people still don't get how to pass it. And just love the last trap, cruel as hell. And I loved it to see more backstory on the nerve gas house and the razor wire trap. And yes the pendulum opening was wicked to see. But also agree on the fact that Hoffman is an incredibly unlikable character and honestly Mandylor is a bad actor, they could have casted a much more interesting and less obvious villain. And yeah, the whole Strahm VS Hoffman story was uninteresting. But for me the pros greatly outweigh the cons, this movie is such a great ride!!
I enjoyed the first Saw movie as it was fresh at the time and I have it in my collection to rewatch. In terms of the sequels, I prefer to watch Cody Leach reviewing them rather than the actual movies.
I agree with you. I only kept watching after saw 5. Just to see how the story ended. I Had to finish it. But saw 3 was the end of the story if you ask me.
I always went because the movies were just fun. I never expected masterpieces, but I always had a good time. As for Hoffman, I knew he was the bad guy, but I also enjoy Mandalor so I wasn't upset that he was in the movie as much as he was. For the series as a whole, I think I over thought it because I kinda felt the whole premise was supposed to be to make people better people and to make them grateful for being alive, but in the end, Jigsaw had to learn himself that you couldn't torment or scare people into being better human beings and in turn he became just like them all and turned into the biggest villain. Even by the time you get to the end and you know he realizes the monsters he's created in Amanda and Hoffman so he fixes it with the notes to Jill and when we find out Elwes is still involved to 'fix it' its too late. Yeah. I overthought these way too much, haha.
Not a fan of this franchise myself, but I actually didn't mind this one. Aside from John, Hoffman is my favorite character in this franchise. I have the complete opposite reaction to his character then you, Cody lol To me, this one utilizes his character better than any other film in this franchise. Didn't like 4, didn't like 6 or 7, but this one was okay to me.
As someone who absolutely adores the Saw franchise, for me Saw 5 is the most forgettable and the most boring. I do personally love Detective Stahm and Detective Hoffman, but I do think that Hoffman is the weaker apprentice compared to Amanda and even to an extent Jill Tuck. I honestly forgot half of the traps or what the 'twist' even was and I marathon this franchise like once every 3 months. But for me personally Saw 5 is the worst Saw movie (I honestly prefer Jigsaw over Saw 5)
I like this one, it's one my favourites. Only thing I would change is maybe spend more time on the main game and slightly less on Hoffman/Strahm. The characters in the main game could have done with more characterisation and screen time. Generally speaking though, I prefer the Saw films that have groups tackling the traps rather than ppl running solo.

The thing i hate about Saw 5 is that you root and cheer for Agent Strahm in the ENTIRE movie just to see him get killed off brutally in the end, COMPLETELY undoing the entire movie. Smh 🤦🏽♂️
Holy shit that absolute butchering of Hoffman is exactly how I felt as a 10 year old watching this series for the first time. Shit had me choking. Could not stand his character at all. I definitely dropped the series completely after this one too, and I think it’s because the ending implies another movie with that rat bastard and I couldn’t take another.
Seeing the way Cody talks about Hoffman just makes me think about how much of a field day he's gonna have shitting on Saw 3D lmfao

Do you like it Cody Leach?
My god I had ENOUGH of Hoffman by the end of Saw The Final Chapter UGH !!! I was fucking yelling screaming and throwing things until someone fucking stabbed his heart out oh my god this guy HAS TO GO !!!
I agree with you Cody, this was where the series started to die. Although still better then 3D though
It was nice of Mr Jigsaw to let you shave and get a haircut
There must've been a trap that did that.
Their is a scene in saw 3D that is bad ass and shows how unstoppable mark is and I want Cody opinion on it. Because it a 50 50.
I actually thought Strahm was pretty cool.
Yes thank you Cody!!👍
Lol. That intro!
Are you filming in the room you got stuck in after losing your trap?
When Cody said watching saw five years ago this is the point when I said I don't care anymore. Watching it years later I still don't care😂
Saw 5 is my favorite saw movie I love it so much everything is great I love the traps and the 5 person trap it such a great movie
Thank You bro. I've been waiting.
