My favorite review of Spiral, I felt like this is a good spinoff to the original trilogy of Saw after Jigsaw died. Also the biggest clue to who was behind the traps was *SPOILERS*
when they didnt completely show Chris Rock's partner trap/death they just cut away from it. That ending is what won me over for this film plus the underlying message with the current situation with the police. All I can say is I wonder what they have plannned for a sequel (if they make one)

That said I really enjoyed it and was one of the best of the series for me. I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than Jigsaw and..... Final Chapter.. fuck that movie. Also if the Saw franchise continues, id love if it became an anthology series with more movies like this one that are completely separate from the original series.

For me, it's a welcome change of pace. I can see it not being for everyone, but then again this is the Saw franchise so I'm kind of used to saying that.
Really hope we get a director's cut. I keep hearing about pacing issues, maybe that will help fill in some of the problems. Plus, word has it a trap was shot and edited yet got removed for being "to gnarly". I'm insanely curious what the mind behind shit like drowning in rotten pig guts and a operation table designed to twist your limbs and neck full circle would deem "to gnarly".

Saw this last night and really, really loved it. Not close to being my favorite in the series, and I have a few nitpicks, but I’m so glad to see another Saw flick. It’s my favorite thriller series. I think it’s some of the best cop film ever made (when it comes to series), even though they can be really cheaply made. I think Rock needed different lines, sometimes, because he doesn’t always work here, but I still liked him and Jackson in their roles. I was also extremely relieved of how great the traps were, and how much throwing-off I experienced throughout the film.

    • @michaelkikle3018
      @michaelkikle3018 3 года назад +3

Agreed, dude! I totally thought it was the police chief (the sexy female lol). Because the modified voice in the traps sounded exactly like her, with the pitch dropped. I’d love to know if they got her to record those lines. It doesn’t sound like a man with a modification. Kept me on my toes-between the chief, the one female cop thats in half the movie and then vanished (probably killed off, in a deleted scene), and the blonde wife of the dead cop at the interview. The director really threw me off with all of that.

Thank you for an honest review, Cody. I went in expecting to hate this flick, but I can't. It was well done. There are some glaring editing issues, especially with the timeline, but it is probably the best looking Saw flick to date. I also had a small problem with Chris Rock's casting (Yes, I understand that he is the reason this movie was made, and the character was written with him in mind.) It just seemed like in every scene he was in it was a buildup to a joke that didn't have a punchline. Total comedy blueballs. All in all, I enjoyed the film for the most part, but the twist was not really a twist, as you said. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Fun flick, and I'll definitely check it out again when it goes to VOD.

When he's rescuing his coworker from the 'totally normal glass recycling machine'; he's in a panic trying to use the key. He could easily block the flying glass with the garbage can. Then cut to see his dead coworker and immediately his heart rate is back to resting.

    Great review Cody!
This was personally my least favorite saw movie for a couple of reasons.
Traps: I thought that the traps never really had a chance to breath. With the the way the movie was edited, it felt like we were in a trap and then boom the person was dead super quick. Even though the traps were unique, I thought they still were lacking on the Gore, and none of them really had that good Money Shot.
Twist: I also predicted the twist not too far into the movie like you did, which was due to a choice they made in the movie about how they portrayed the “death” of a character.
Plot: While I enjoyed the plot to an extent, I felt as if the characters were just going wherever the killer was leading them, and not really figuring anything out for themselves. Also, the ending felt like it didn’t have any punch too it, wasn’t deserving of the awesome main theme song.
Conclusion: I feel as if this movie alienates both audiences. It’s not SAW enough for the loyal fanatics, while also being too SAW for the casual movie goer.
Just a few thoughts about the movie I had, great review as always Cody.

I myself was underwhelmed by the 3rd act and saw it all coming. And while the villain definitely had a better motive than jigsaw, they are nowhere near as memorable as Tobin bell. But I do appreciate the original mystery feel it brought back and I do think they can potentially build something better from here.

Same thoughts as you. Only thing I didn't like that you didn't mention was the ending. For me, it didn't really make sense. SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING
Did the swat team really not see that Sam Jackson was propped up with wires and being forced to raise the gun? Those wires were real thick, I think you'd be able to see them.
Also, did they not see Shkenk in the elevator? Were they not listening to Chris screaming and pointing? Just didn't make sense to me. Really liked the movie though.

Seeing this tomorrow can't wait & Cody actually not wanting to gouge his eyes out confirms it. Loved the Hellraiser punch. I haven't seen a single film in the franchise & don't want to so. You are the only reason I'll know anything about it lol

I loved this film. Better production values, better plot concept, better acting than pretty much all the other films. Only the original wins out for plot concept.
People are mad about Rock's "jokes" falling flat at the beginning, or being out of place, and I think that's on them. They can't get the image of Chris Rock, Comedian, out of their head, so when they see and hear him making jokes they automatically compare it to his actual comedic work. No, those jokes were supposed to be bad. They were only meant to elicit a few chuckles by being poorly timed in relation to the set and setting of the film.
And when the actual plot kicks off, those comedic lines are gone.
There's no tone-switch, the film is what it is. It's people's preconceived ideas that are ruining the film.

I have spiral ranked number 6 in the franchise. I enjoyed it but the ending ruined it for me. I’m still looking forward to future of the franchise and hope that in the end I can enjoy this ending.

According to director Darren Lynn Bousman, a trap consisting of someone getting their face cut off had to be cut from the film in order for it to receive an R rating from the MPAA.
Chris Rock is a fan of the "Saw" franchise and pitched the idea to Lionsgate. As a result, they made him one of the lead actors, a co-writer, and executive producer.
The first film in the series not to be released in October
In order to secure an R rating, the film had to be submitted to the MPAA 11 times. All other attempts resulted in a rating of NC-17.
The first "Saw" film to not utilize the annual October Blood Drive with advertised poster models.
Darren Lynn Bousman revealed that Detective Drury originally had a bigger role and a "horrific death scene", but they cut it out for being "too much".
Marisol Nichols' second horror film, following "Scream 2" (1997).
This is the third film in the franchise where the phrase "Game Over" is not used; the other films that do not include the phrase are "Saw V" (2008) and "Jigsaw" (2017).
William Schenk marks the fourth Jigsaw Killer that had a family member killed. It is revealed that John Kramer lost his son, Gideon, in "Saw IV" (2007); Mark Hoffman lost his sister, Angelina, in "Saw V" (2008); and Logan Nelson lost his wife, Christine, in "Jigsaw" (2017).
Even though a photo of Tobin Bell is shown in the film, the actor did not receive any credit.
Is the second film in the series to be framed at 2.35:1. The first film to be framed in 2.35:1 was Jigsaw (2017).
Darren Lynn Bousman revealed that he was very angry during the finger-skinning sequence, knowing that they lost so much of it to the whims of the MPAA. "You saw every finger break, every bone pop, every knuckle snap."
Darren Lynn Bousman wanted a subway tunnel, but he was told the logistics just weren't in the budget. He held his ground, and they eventually built a subway tunnel set to meet their needs. It's a tiny set that uses forced perspective to make things look bigger than they are
The previous working title was "The Organ Donor".
According to Chris Rock, two films that were the inspiration for this film are "Seven" (1995) and "48 Hrs." (1982).
    Chris Rock's first horror film.

This has given me more confidence in the film after I started to doubt these past few weeks, thank you for that. Also I'm wondering when the ranking of the Saw films will be, I am curious how'd you rank near the middle as I feel that's the toughest place of any Saw ranking.

To be honest, I wa t to see more Saw movies from the detectives point of view, itd be interesting if we mostly only see the aftermath of the traps and the detectives have to piece any piece of information they can get a hold of to track down the Jigsaw killer. Kinda similar to Seven, but instead of the deadly sins its morally corrupted traps, like they figure out people who would want to do this to the person so on and so on

This movie was great, better than the last few sequels. Just don't understand why it couldn't be called Jigsaw 2/Saw 9? Not sure why they couldn't use the original voice and puppet either? Don't know how many books Saw has. Hope we get a Spiral 2 though. Better than Cruella imo.

I have not seen this yet but I want to see it & I am the kind of person who hates knowing the plotline or killer at the beginning or in the middle of the film because I feel like it ruins it for me & there are so many films I know who the killer was from the beginning of the films
