My husband and I almost drowned in 2018 right outside of Kismet. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. BE CAREFUL! If the weather changes, get back to shore ASAP! It's very shallow as well. My last 2 trips to Roatan were with my best friend... We don't screw around with wind or bad weather at all. We stay out of the water. It doesn't matter how strong of a swimmer you are... the current can take you in a second. I'm not saying this to scare anyone but I was naive enough to think I could outswim the giant waves.
Thank you for sharing and so glad you are ok. I always advice to respect the ocean, no matter how strong you think you are, the ocean is stronger. I know many friends that have gotten swept out during dives on the point. All were rescued, but that current can be intense and change very very quickly. What is great is the boat captains are good about letting people know too.
@@LaurenHughesRealtorandInvestor that is scary!! There is no lifeguard or anything like in North America. I was super naive back then.
I forgot to add - to anyone new to West Bay… if you’re going to snorkel out to the drop off (around the rock), there are some areas of coral that are REALLY shallow that you cannot pass. You have to weave in and out and at some point float over the coral. There is a map on Google images that is helpful. Watch videos on RUclips. It’s not a beginner snorkel. (IMO) I saw people standing on the reef multiple times in West End and West Bay. 🤬 Make sure you drink lots of water before you go out, use sunscreen and a rash guard shirt. Also come back earlier than you think even if you don’t feel tired. You WILL be tired by the time you swim back. Mind the sun and wind, especially your lower back if your shirt rides up. I got burnt there.
It is absolutely stunning once you get out. I could stay out there all day! 😍 For some reason this year it felt easy getting back but difficult to get out. (In terms of navigating) 🤷♀️
