The devil is in the details as they say: Boys were prefered in rural areas where farmers needed more hands, in the cities there was no significant preference for men over women however, there was a slight skew towards women being born I believe (somebody can correct me here). Since women generally marry equal or higher socio-economic status men you are now left with a lot of single , poor men from the country side that no woman wants to marry and most of the city men that have a decent job have lots of options, if they even want to settle down at all. There simply are not enough high-earners that are tall and attractive that women want, there are plenty of the single farmers from the country side though. In the end the ratio pans out to something like 80% of the women in cities chase the top 1-5% of men, so why would those men settle down? they just pick at young woman when they do want to settle down later in life, meanwhile all those other dozens of women are left single and past 30.

I don’t think there are any guarantees and no young person man or woman is a good judge of character that is something that only comes with time. I actually would bet a lot of these women probably had stable relationships with men they were in love with but realized that they weren’t good people. More to the point many women I have spoken to that are older and single actually have horror stories about coming to the realization that the man was a complete fraud. One X of mine had a child and got married only for him to leave her flee to a different country and come out as gay. It´s ridiculous assuming that people without a degree are less educated, intelligent or capable of being a good partner. Still, the women´s requests are ridiculously high. They could just suck it up and be the main bread-winner. But then, some men´s egos don´t like dating up, so it might not be totally one-sided. Family expectations still play a major role in China; especially when it comes to marriage and the obligations that come with it: for example, taking care of your in-laws, etc. In addition, would Chinese men take on these responsibilities such as care work if the woman had a higher education and earned more? I went from a long-term relationship to a divorce to being single. It was an adjustment going to restaurants and gatherings alone. Not having someone to talk to meant I heard a lot of others peoples conversations and let me say most women conversationally are the aural equivalent of pet pics and 'what I had for lunch', not much to say but that doesn't stop them from talking. Advice to both sexes would be to cultivate yourself, follow your interests, do what you can to help your community and then you will find community.

I'm Chinese. Getting Chinese women to pay for their share even at a restaurant is like pulling a tooth out of a tiger. This is a bad case of minor league players wanting to play in the major leagues. They aren't taught that a marriage where the guy pays for everything and affords a luxurious secure life is only reserved for the hyper-beautiful 1%. Note "hyper-beautiful" not just someone "pretty" or "cute".
This is happening not only in China but also among overseas East Asians. The cause is really bad parenting. Parents raise them with the "If you're going to get married make sure you're not getting into a bad bargain" instead of "find someone who you get along with and build a life together". Nothing really wrong by itself, it's just incompatible with modern society where the cost of living has skyrocketed.

My wife is beautiful. The day I met her, I had no job, a 25 year old car, and a bad smoking habit. My language was unclean. But knew the second I met her I could and should change. The devil is in the details as they say: Boys were prefered in rural areas where farmers needed more hands, in the cities there was no significant preference for men over women however, there was a slight skew towards women being born I believe (somebody can correct me here). Since women generally marry equal or higher socio-economic status men you are now left with a lot of single , poor men from the country side that no woman wants to marry and most of the city men that have a decent job have lots of options, if they even want to settle down at all. There simply are not enough high-earners that are tall and attractive that women want, there are plenty of the single farmers from the country side though. In the end the ratio pans out to something like 80% of the women in cities chase the top 1-5% of men, so why would those men settle down? they just pick at young woman when they do want to settle down later in life, meanwhile all those other dozens of women are left single and past 30.

I don’t think there are any guarantees and no young person man or woman is a good judge of character that is something that only comes with time. I actually would bet a lot of these women probably had stable relationships with men they were in love with but realized that they weren’t good people.
More to the point many women I have spoken to that are older and single actually have horror stories about coming to the realization that the man was a complete fraud. One X of mine had a child and got married only for him to leave her flee to a different country and come out as gay. Telling people pick a good person when they are young is completely nuts. No young person has the self control to just not be attracted or the insight to try to pick wisely. People say these things because they happen to either been through it and it’s to late for them. Or they were someone who naturally has good taste in a partner but in my experience most young women are just into what they are into in a similar way as me when I was younger. I have never heard a young woman talk about stability or anything of the sort. It all mostly seems to be about chemistry, the few women who I hear talk about money above everything, all I see is guys scam those girls. As someone who used to be very wealthy one thing anyone who has money really really does not want is to be wanted for money. When I had half a million dollars in my bank account I drove a civic for that exact reason. That is when I noticed that men much less successful than me but who made a show of looking rich got much more attention. I was not at all hard on the eyes either but I never once attracted that sort of person because I do definitely feel it’s an image thing. Nobody cared I had money if I didn’t live large, I kinda regret it but only in the sense of missed adventure I never would have been happy settling with someone for money anyway. Plus since I don’t have any of that obviously they would have left do it was wise to look for not that.
I enjoy giving people dating advice when they ask but the only authentic thing I feel can be said is you can’t choose who you love. The most common thing I hear from young people is express doubts about weather they should stay with someone but I always just ask if I told you “yes, absolutely you should leave them would you” they always say no. And that’s the point people kid themselves into thinking they have a choice. I would almost admire someone who could be with someone just for financial benefit just because it would literally be making life a job. But I don’t think that is what it is about. I don’t think these women want to be unreasonable they just want what they want and have to live with that. Wanting something unreasonable is how you end up single, I am saying that as much about myself as anyone.

I'm 65, male and single and live in the United States. I went on a Chinese date site to see what Chinese women were about. Most of them were absolutely stunning and well educated. But what surprised me was that women as young as 50 were relentlessly sending me messages and wanting to get to know me. I don't think it was desperation but they clearly want to meet people outside of China. These women put American women to shame. They don't seem to age and they take care of themselves. This is very strange to me. I married at 21 in 1972. My intended was 23. I was in the US Navy. She had graduated with a BS in Physical Therapy. My family was dysfunctional. Her's was very stable.
I was living out of the country and was her escort while while she was visiting her best friend whose husband was my supervisor. Afterward our entire relationship was through daily letters.
Neither of us had money She had school debts to pay. I had a well paying job to return to after my enlistment in the Navy. I lost that job after 16 years and started a business.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised to see the same ideas come out of Chinese womens' mouths that I hear from Western women constantly. But then, I wasn't surprised, either. Part of this is female nature; the other part is that social media (along with feminist values) has infiltrated Chinese culture.

I went from a long-term relationship to a divorce to being single. It was an adjustment going to restaurants and gatherings alone. Not having someone to talk to meant I heard a lot of others peoples conversations and let me say most women conversationally are the aural equivalent of pet pics and 'what I had for lunch', not much to say but that doesn't stop them from talking. Advice to both sexes would be to cultivate yourself, follow your interests, do what you can to help your community and then you will find community.

Even if some/most of these women have "too high standards" In China, even with their disproportionate numbers between men and women, the cultural history is still very predominant, and therefore women still also get discarded, if they are much older than 26 years. My oldest daughter is 20. My youngest is 1.5. I would hope they keep high standards for a partner. Someone like my husband (their father) or my husband (their grandfather). Kind, thoughtful, empathetic and ambitious. I hope my three son's grow up to be like their father and grandfather. Men who are equal partners and share the load. My daughter's would be better off single for life than to lower standards than an equal partner. My son's would be better off single for life than to lower standards than an equal partner.
It's not wrong for men or women to set standards. Possibly unrealistic but I've seen too many miserable marriages where one partner believed they had lowered their standards out of fear of ending up alone. It never turns out well. It breeds discontentment, contempt and hostility. Better to be alone and have no one to blame than yourself than to be with someone you resent.
