Eddie Mora Finally I can see someone actually caring about the dynamics which is one of the most important aspects in music. This is one reason why I prefer Mangini over Portnoy. Even if the player is good and doing great stuff, it sounds boring if the loudness is the same from the beginning till the end. But, and don't get me wrong, I think you over do it sometimes. The key to being one of the top instrument players of any kind, is to know when is our time to shine, and when it's not. To know when you can do somethings and when not to do them. Like I said, don't get me wrong, you are an amazing drummer, and you take this advice as you want, but practice your awareness of your space in the music. Listen better to the general context of the song, the pieces that compose it and learn a little better what you can and cannot do to improve the song. Portnoy was a master at that, and also mangini. That's why he was picked. To all the guys here saying this would be how Portnoy would have played it, I don't agree. Yes, he would have used a lot of the techniques, but... Well, you know where I am going.
