    I learned how to splice ropes with the same methods in Boy Scouts back in the '60s. I always wrapped my splices and tried to stretch them afterward to tighten up the splice. I took the wrapping off afterward. Never had a failure. I've still got my Marlinspike knife.

    Interesting, at 15:00 Washington State L&I in their logging standards prohibits using "flat bar" marlin spikes. Marlin spikes have to be round to avoid damaging strands of the line. I have helped make several eye splices similar to the one shown, in the 2" line. We only had a stump and railroad spikes to form the splice, along with some 6' marlin spikes for greater leverage. Our eyes had to be longer also. an eye had to be 48x the diameter of the cable. Which did make it a bit easier. Still though in 4' of snow and half rain half snow coming out of the sky, I like the conditions these guys work in. It is still a tough job and takes a lot of skill to do it fast. I also used to compete in logging shows where we spliced an eye into a piece of 1" I was the helper and we did OK, but never got close to the champions who could do it in 4-5 minutes from spiking down to cutting the tails off. It was amazing to watch them fly.

    • @evanmyers8334
      @evanmyers8334 3 года назад

      If you happen to know of any video of that logging show I would love to see a literal splicing competition to see how we compare in Alberta.

    • @northmanlogging2769
      @northmanlogging2769 2 года назад +3

      Think maybe you've been lied to too much, about half of your story is bs, which makes me question the other half as well. 6' spikes? "flat" vs round, a flat tip is what does not damage strands, 4' of snow? really bro? (then how did the trucks make it up the hill?) 48xdia? so a splice in 1" rope would need to be 4' long? and literally every splicing competition starts with the rope staked down, and stops when the last tuck is completed, no one cuts the tails in competition.

    • @knotbumper
      @knotbumper Год назад

      @@northmanlogging2769 Interesting, I just saw your reply of a year ago. . You are 30? perhaps 40? When I was logging, years before you were even born, that is what we did. Now, today, things may be different. Washington L&I in their logging standards (also Oregon's) still require the length of an eye to be a minimum of 48x the diameter of the line. So, yes, that would mean a 4' eye. Your inexperience shows, you don't "stake down a line, you spike it down. And, in those days, competition included spiking down the line and cutting the tails. Actually, watching your videos, I wonder if you ever really worked in the woods. Right now at 72 years of age, you and I share the same build and I know that if I had the same build you do now when I was your age, nobody would ever have hired me because I would have been considered too slow.
      Just because you never saw it in your limited experience,does not mean it never happened.

    Um... 2:58 - I know it wasn't done maliciously, but the use of the word 'knot' in describing a spliced union is exactly 100% incorrect. 🙃 'Joint' would be a more suitable term.
    All knots are inherently weak; the point of splicing and the reason for its tremendous success is that it doesn't bend strands at sharp angles against each other (like a knot) and introduce areas of localised stress.
    Knot that I'm complaining... 😁 Thanks for uploading!

      Otherwise, I imagine the rate of work by all the other teams in the video is carefully judged to avoid having the guys getting pooped too quickly. By working (relatively!) slowly and steadily and by hand, they can keep going all day long.
      Hmm... Now where have I heard that before... 🤔
