In 1965 I was 10 years old and I had the original camcorder rocket but it only took a single snapshot I could not resist I ordered one now it has a video camera this is way cool
There were two Estes camera rockets. The Camroc would take a single picture when the ejection charge released the nose cone. The camera release cord got tucked into the tube under the nose cone. Astrocam was a 8mm movie film camera with a rearward facing lens. Start the movie camera and then launch the rocket. The camera they have in this video is the 21st century version. 🙂
Well they put out another iteration of the ASTROCAM well not surprising, many people asked about that item before, I had one of those back in the 1980s. So Estes put out a new version nice I just might have to get one.
@@alfredindy8058 I had the even older Camroc...We had to use a black bag to cut our own black and white film into circles to make them fit. It was crazy, but we did it anyway...
@@alfredindy8058 yeah, we never thought of it as being hard, rather just how it was and went along with it. It was worth it. But the Camroc could have been even better if the lens had been glass. Of course that would have bumped up the price beyond $4....LOL...(Ah, the prices in 1969...)
Hey Tim, what would you suggest as a way to stabilize the camera better on the way down after the parachute has opened? Would using two chutes and completely separating the nose cone with the camera from the rocket body do it? Would cutting a spill hole in the parachute help? Using shorter shroud lines? Longer shroud lines? Adding a small weight to the base of the nose cone? Thanks.
A spill hole would be the first thing that I'd try. Other methods are shown in our Peak-of-Flight Newsletter. See issues #546, #497, #492, and #485. They are at: www.apogeerockets.com/Peak-of-Flight?pof_list=archives
Well "Kiddies " that does look like fun, but why stop with A D engine ...I think this senerio calls for "You Guessed it !" ..MORE POWER ! lets try dropping an E or an F engine in it and see what happenes ? Even if the Rocket blows up in mid air , thats still kool too . Because you know why? we can always build a new one .
Fantastic …Built Estes rockets as a kid . Technology today unreal.

I like how the camera could keep on pointing downwards too as the rocket descended.
Can the camera be mounted on other rockets?
certainly.
I couldn’t afford one of these when I was a kid… and there was NO VIDEO back then…
My friend has an original kit - unopened. It contains a 8mm film and camera.

@@rosswarren436 Wow! A lot of work for black and white video. Nevertheless it was fun.

Still gotta build and launch mine. It's still in the box!
Almost got on in the late 70s...today I wonder is estes e power the same as the arrotech e engine..the truth is out there. 😎
The Aerotech E motors have a smidge more power than the Estes E. But it also is lighter weight, so it can typically fly higher
@@apogeerockets Thanks, your infos are very helpful.👍 Now to find a place to launch.

@@apogeerockets THANK YOU! I'll definitely check those out!!! Happy flights to you!
It's expensive for it but for a kid that would be pretty cool gift !
How do I turn on the camera
Mine whistles on the way down with chute popped. Neato.
How do I watch the recording ? Do I just plug in the sd card into a modern laptop?
Yes
make a soyuz or r7 model rocket. id like to see how it would look like
First. I was looking at that in Target.
The Astrocam works well: ruclips.net/video/RqO-M2Urlg0/видео.html
One quick question if someone could pls answer . How do I watch the recorded footage ? Does it add card just plug right into a modern laptop or ?
Check out the website, where you can see exactly how to use it, and download the instruction manual. The link is in the video description above.
@@apogeerockets ohh ok thank you very much 👍🏼
Wait won’t a D motor be too thick?
There are a few 18mm diameter D motors that will work fine. Check our website for which ones to get.
I love this channel
I built my Astro cam in the 4th grade. 1978. But it wasn’t video. Just took a picture.
This ain't your grandpa's Camroc on a Delta II....LOL...
