DVT treatment typically begins with blood thinners, namely direct oral anticoagulants such as Coumadin® (warfarin), Pradaxa®, Xarelto® and Eliquis®. However, blood thinners are not always a safe option for patients. As AMITA Health Heart & Vascular Institute interventional cardiologist Bharat Samy, MD, explains, patients who have recently undergone surgery or are high fall risks due to neurological issues might benefit more from a filter surgically inserted into the vena cava. Blood thinners are also not sufficient to treat patients at high risk of chronic blood clots in the legs, so removing the clots via minimally invasive surgery might be recommended in those cases.
