The Tesla Coil was an electrical transformer invented by none other than Nikola Tesla. His purpose for this machine was to transmit energy without the use of wires.
Even though in the end the idea didn't come through, the concept is very interesting and you can have a lot of fun with a Tesla Coil.

Really love this video finding it 2 years later. My late brother was a mad scientist in our basement as a teenager. I remember he built a tesla coil and a van de graaf generator we would mess around with.

We only have access to a very small percentage of what Nikola Tesla did. There are other patents and even apparatus that weren't patented by Nikola Tesla that could have transferred electricity wireless. A simple experiment that can be done to demonstrate the transfer of energy wireless, is a simple laser pen and a small solar panel. Tesla also built a version of the laser, his (particle accelerator) He claimed you could shoot down a plane 200 miles from the source. The interesting thing is, you could also transfer energy with the particle accelerator, without the inverse law. All you need is a receiver for the power. Tesla also had a patent for that. Apparatus for the utilization of radiant energy, could be used for that. I believe Tesla as brilliant as he was, would have understood this possibility, and maybe that was how he planned on doing it over long distances without lightning going off everywhere.

I made four Tesla coils back in 1995 to 2000. The largest of which put out 7ft. streamers of electric discharge. The second largest, when to emit rather than discharge powered a florescent bulb 12 feet away from the coil. I deeply appreciate the education you are dispensing thru your channel about the greatest inventive discoverer of all Humankind. Carry on, Please!
The energy Tesla transmitted was NEVER through the air, but through the GROUND. The Tesla coil is considerably more then a simple resonant transformer, it is a coupling device between the capacitance in the air and the ground currents, the top capacitance made out of many small hemispheres (as in the magnifying transformer patent) and the extensive grounding are the 2 crucial parts. The primary, secondary and thirtiary are tuning components. Finally the sparks are not transmission of energy they are pure loss in the system., for Tesla they were just a measure of the potential build in the apparatus, and were not used for anything useful aside from that particular use. The energy is and always has been transmitted though the amps in the ground and not through the vibrations through the dielectric air.
Please read AND understand the patents and Tesla's writing and after that post hopefully more educational videos and not mostly wrongly understood patent interpretations as this one.
That was my understanding as well, it was through the Ground. Thats why his death ray (that was basically a vaporized mercury accelerator) worked on ships and not air craft

Btw, the secret to soldering is a lot of flux and solder with 2% copper content.
Also try to get the good old leaded solder. It's a thousand times better than lead-free solder.
Look up Louis Rossmann for how much flux to apply (answer: more than you currently have)
