    Simon, one tip I have is after I trim my nails before a race, I file down the top edge so it's angled down towards the skin. I've found that this really reduces friction on the nail because there are no hard edges to rub on anything.

  • @dresden_slowjog
    @dresden_slowjog 9 месяцев назад +7

    Don't cut your toenails the day before the race. Cut it like 4 days before so in case of a lttle mishaps the skin has time to heal. (Forgot the source but followed this tip from then on)

    Then there is the race where it is pouring and has been for days. The course is a marsh where it is flat and a river where it is steep. Your feet will be wet. By about eight hours in it will feel like the bottoms of your feet have torn off. Every step is agony and you imagine the bloody mess in your socks is becoming a foot meat smoothie. You arrive at the next crewed aid station and your crew urges you to change your shoes and take a look. You cringe in horror as they peel off the soggy socks and… “They’re kinda white and wrinkly. But I don’t see any blisters. Where do they hurt?”
    Sometimes wet feet ARE a disaster, but often it is just pain and no damage. You can run on it and nothing bad happens.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  Месяц назад +2

      Sure you won't always have blisters from wet feet, but it's certainly a factor on longer events. And, painful feet, regardless of blisters, is a bad thing too, right?

      @@runningwithsimon absolutely! I just thought I’d share because that was my experience at Hellbender 100 last year and then it happened to a buddy I was crewing/pacing for at Massanutten 100 this year. In both cases it was a great relief to find that the feet weren’t actually macerated :)

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  6 месяцев назад

      haha that escalated quickly! But yeah, it's something to work on for sure because it only gets worse. And it can certainly be improve, although for sure some people have more sensitive feet and need more 'help'. I'm lucky myself but my wife used to struggle a LOT. I know a lot of people had success diving even deeper by reading that book.

      @@runningwithsimon what socks do you recommend my man I’m doing my first ultra 50k in march got my tape and body glide but unsure on socks 🧦 I’m mentally tough as old boots but blisters can cripple anyone but don’t want to dnf because of a stupid blister

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  10 месяцев назад +2

      @@L-dw5sx Yeah - I'm 100% with you. I'm cheap for almost anything I use on trails - whatever works is fine. But socks...socks I want quality becaues I don't want to blow a race because of them!
      So for inner socks - if you go that route - I use fox river socks from amazon. Than for the "big" socks - I use Darn Tough socks - I go with those with more cushion, but worth trying to see what you like. They are pricier, but I think very good. Another one to try are injinji socks - if you are into toe socks. I don't myself, but a lot of close friends use that and say it helped a bunch to prevent blisters between toes (I tape my feet which I guess is similar). Regardless of what you do, highly suggest trying them on long runs. If there is a risk of the race being wet, you could even delibaretely try to wet your feet once to see how you do. Finally, once you find a type you really like, get a few. You'll go through them, they'll get hole. And it's a nightmare scenario to be race morning, put your socks, and you have a big hole and no spare. Socks are small and non-perishable - get extra, and bring them with you on race day. AND in your drop bag - you may want to change mid-race. Better to have them and not use them, than want them but have nothing.
      ps; I somewhat assumed you wanted to know the type of socks to prevent blisters, and not the color or style. .. . But maybe I'm wrong. Because everyone know that just like with cars, color is a big deal! Red cars (or socks) are faster, and blue are more reliable. Depends what's your plan. Make sure that they match your outfit. Or, bonus if you go with mismatch socks... !
