  • Cold Process Modified Bitumen Roll Roofing is another way to apply rolled roofing other than hot mopping or torching. The term cold applied is referring to other than hot applied. Self adhered systems are a hybrid form of cold process. Applying modified bitumen granulated cap sheet is a broad brush that can be applied to many different situations. With the right set of people, efficiency can be had with cold applied systems just as well as hot applied systems. The difference is that the danger for the persons and property decrease dramatically while using cold applied materials.
Cold processing can be used for repairs and new installations alike. It is just a matter of getting used to the materials.

I was in the roofing business for 35 years. I retired in 2004 because of a bad back, hip and legs. just a wore out body. I done all types of roofing. I was located in the upper Tx. panhandle and would do work on grain elevators. The cold process was the only thing that would work and it worked good. They were to high off the ground for hot tar, use couldn't use torch on because of fire. And I found out this worked perfect.

Can you go over a smooth built up roof with cold process and granulated membrane?

Should be able to as long as there is no rotten wood. I would tie in the new modified with new metal (dripedge and flashings)

Getting ready to do my house 66' long x 26'wide. Question: How do I roll a 66' long run with 33' rolls? You mention seam on seem not recommended. How much overlap should I do?

You are talking about a side lap which is typically 6". More is better. Stagger the side laps so they are not right on top of each other. If you roll out the roll and then use the left over piece, it will typically be staggered already, but not always.
