I have been looking at a ton of videos (mostly from GAF and Mule-Hide) on installing either peel and stick "Mod Bit", or torch-down "Mod Bit". Home Depot and Lowes both have "Mod Bit" GAF Liberty peel and stick OR torch-down. You can choose your Mod Bit type between a SBS or an APP. SBS has more of a rubberized ingredient, and an APP has more of a plastic ingredient... but both are mod bits. They are about the same price and about the same expected life I think... which is 10 to 25 years depending on the number of layers (ie. plys) you put on.
There is also EPDM and PVC types of flat roof material, but frankly I did not have the time to research those any more than 10 minutes. But THINK that for residential roofs, "mod bit" seems to be most popular now.
Besides GAF, the only other brand I have researched is Mule-Hide. It seems just as good as GAF, and also has peel and stick and torch-on in SBS or APP. I have not made a final choice yet, but will decide soon after I talk to the Mule-Hide supply house in town. (If I get a chance I will let yall know which I end up going with and why.)
You are suppose to roll on a black primer coat to the wood deck to activate the SA (Self Adhesive base sheet). This primer coat allows the base sheet to stick better. I am also seeing that you may NOT want to put on the SA base sheet directly onto the wood (as they did in the video)... even with the primer. Because it will be impossible to remove years from now on the next roof job. So you may need to replace the plywood deck! yikes!!! So, I am reading that you may want to put down the MA base sheet first (Mech Attached nail-down) as your FIRST PLY. It will save your wood deck from being destroyed on you NEXT roof replacement years from now. After your base sheet, you would next put on either a cap sheet, OR you could next put on a middle smooth ply sheet, and then a granular cap sheet. The more plys, the better... .and the more expensive.
BTW ... Mule-Hide has a sheet that can be used as EITHER a base sheet OR as a cap sheet. It has a smooth top (NOT granulated) It is called "APP Torch Base/Cap". You torch it on. Not sure if GAF has something like that, or if it only comes as a torch-on. Like i said, i am not a roofer. Hopefully we hear from someone that knows this stuff.
After researching the various materials and brands for an upcoming roof job, I now realize that getting the job done correctly, as THE MANUFACTURER CALLS FOR, is probably more important than the brand or specific type of material used.
Great job on the video! It was good to see real-world roofing video. Those slick factory videos with that background music and fancy graphics are boring after the first 10. Thanks!
Any tips or opinions on low slope roofing from an actual installer would be great if someone cares to share.

Very good job. Those boys went above and beyond with those over laps on bottom layer. Might be more cost effective to have done TPO for white or epdm if ok to do in black. No seams when bought in bulk. I can do that with rubber membrane in half a day alone. Call it a full day with repairs. I tell you this so you can have an idea what it would take. Not knocking these guys at all. Very good job indeed.

How do you determine whether you can lay the new roof over the old (assuming there’s only one existing layer) or if you need to tear up the old roof? If the plywood looks okay from underneath (no water stained or rot), does that mean it doesn’t need replacement?

    • @TomLeeman

@ Tom... Nice video! ... By the way, I remove tar from my hands with "citric acid" that you can buy somewhere, or just use a citrus peel (orange, lime, lemon) plus a little sand, it works all the time for me, of course if it is only a small amount of tar on your hands. I also have used citrus peels to remove tar from my car body, (splashed tar from the road). After squeezing and rubbing the citrus peel on the spot with tar, just wash with soapy water and rinse well. P.S: Do not use sand on the car paint... LOL...

Will be 1/4 to the foot slope. I put the first one on 25 years ago. No leaks in 25 years. Little maintenance over the years.
Always turn the base over and cover the wood.

can't believe all the negative comments. the guys actually doing the work weren't asked any questions and didn't seem bothered in the least...they were working, quickly and efficiently. And as the homeowner he's got every right to be up there monitoring and learning about the process. Plus if the roof leaks, he's got the whole thing on video to prove where they went wrong. I'm a roofer in Canada with over 25 years experience don't you guys ever use elastico stick primer before laying out your peel and stick base a cap. I have no roofing experience but have read and looked at a ton of video the last few days from GAF and Mule-Hide. Yes you should overlap a few inches of the facia with the base sheet. However, you should cut the cap sheet about 1/8" or so shy of the edge of the roof so that you squeeze a bead of special calk onto that edge. The roof material manufacturer you use will state what brand of caulk to use in the install instructions. This is an extra step that adds protection to the edge of the cap sheet and prevent the edge from fraying etc in the years ahead.
