- This video will be on probably one of my favorite cold and I climate weather garment systems. This is the American m65 cold weather uniform it is comprised of a jacket and pants made out a shelter cloth fabric with a removable button in nylon and polyester fill liner. This style of jacket has been in use with since wwii but reached it culmination in the m65 variant during the Vietnam war. This is one of the most beloved American uniform garments ever made and was loved it was adopted by many countries the world over. While this uniform is no longer in use with the Americans, being phased in the mid 00’s it is still used by many countries today. Hopefully you liked this video and subscribed if you like this sort of stuff. Please leave a comment with any questions, additional information, user experiences, or suggestions for future videos and I will do my best to answer them. As always thanks for watching.

I love my M65 field jacket. Been wearing one for 50 years.
I'm on my third one.
ah yes the M-1965 Field Jacket one of the most beloved article of military clothing, ive got every colored/camo pattern they issued, been waring mine for 13 years, my mother bought my first one a woodland m81 with brass zippers and plastic hood zipper from a local hunting goods store for 10 bucks, this particular one was made in 1985 by the Golden MFG Co, Ill keep wearing it until i pass it on to my grandkids lol.
Yeah, Golden and Atlanco are the last Mohicans if you wanna find a real old school G.I. jacket. Alpha sucks last since 90's.
Also my favorite. I believe one could live in thing if necessary and the Spokane homeless seem to concur from what ive seen.
Blackie Thomas has a great video on this jackets versatility
I love the M65 jacket. I wore them in the USAF 1975-1981. Kept me warm in Korea which was the coldest place I have ever been. I have a pair of M-1951 artic trousers with liners. I'm one of those people who didn't know they made M65 trousers. Now I know.
I’ve had the trousers with a liner since 1999. They’ve been my go to snow pants for years. I recently finally replaced them since the knees gave out (disappointed that I can’t seem to find them in OD) and was looking into getting a matching jacket since I saw them at the Army Navy store. I went down a rabbit hole on the whole m65 cold weather system (which led me to here) and I’m thinking of switching my cold weather hiking layering to be based off of the m65 system.
By the way, I think the straps inside the cargo pockets on the pants go through the loops in the crotch. And the loops inside are for the suspenders that not only held up the trousers, but also the long johns.
Thanks for the video.
Rothco made a lighter version. The loops and buttons are present. Warning. These aren't treated, or a synthetic blend. And too light for serious winter use. But otherwise the same. I don't know why nobody has made these in the excellent ripstop poplin from the Vietnam era. Best field pants ever!
The really early jackets from 1965 had steel zipper, and I believe 100% cotton sateen fabric. Just like my Indonesian made olive green coat I had as a kid, with velcro on the top flaps (!), no liner, but the elastic hood. Another popular variant was the Egyptian made M65 with button-on hood and liner included, that came in olive drab, black, asian woodland pattern, sand and wine red. These civilian versions are made of Poly/cotton twill fabric which is the police force standard, and not as nice as the
Inside the cargo pocket on the pants there's a strap that you can stick through a nickel size slit out of the pocket so you can wrap it around your leg to prevent the stuff in your pockets from bouncing around
I knew about the M-1951 trousers, I have had a couple of pairs of those and I like them. I did not realise there was a similar M-1965 - is there much difference?
You sent me down a jacket rabbit hole - I knew there was similarity between 1943/51(50?)/65 but I'd never had cause to work out the difference before, and I did not realise they were still going in the 2000s. 👍
M51 trousers is better lookin model, made from full heavy cotton. M65 - mix of cotton - nylon. M5q liner is a simiar material as liner of m51 fishtail parka. Liner of m65 is similar as a m65 jacket liner ( without "hairy" white side) .
Nice vid, informative and entertaining. Been wearing the m65 on and off for over 30 years. Current is TRI color desert made by Isratek. Mostly wear one of my two A-2's.
If I had to choose ONE military garment, it would be the M65 jacket with the liner :) It's perfect for year round use here in Norway. Our issue field jacket from 1975 is longer, heavier, derived from the 1946 pattern and has no liner.
Got really nice navy issued m65 and a complete pants set comming , very excited
I personally love the M65 pants. I have a hack of making the cuffs elastic.
Good video, new sub, I have the older od green field pants and the woodland. It was a big deal to have a M65 field jacket back in the seventies. Everyone wanted one, even the girls.
very interesting, thank´s v.m.
@Devin K. On the M65 you also have the option to add a artic hood to the jacket as well.
That first jacket I didn't know was rare. I have one, kinda beat up, but I think it could be fixed. Only difference I saw was the color of the pockets. The bag of the pocket is white on mine.
I just picked up a desert m65
I also have a pair of the pants. I just didn't know that's what they were. Haha
Hey man great video. Wondering where you got the M-65 pants from? I’ve been trying to find a pair but they are very elusive.
eBay has some
that greem jacket looks alot like the usmc uniform my uncle was wearing in his picture when he came home from korea that lighter green one
Since I started wearing mine I've worn it almost every day it's a truly wonderful item. Where do you get yours?
hello devin i noticed that your Vietnam era dreen coat have green tags I think after 1982 the u.s . went from a white tag to the green size tags so I'm pretty sure that green m_65 is post Vietnam war from after 1982 but what I really want to know if you can make a video of west & East German uniform size tags its a riddle for me?thanks
Very first m65 jacket had silver zips.
1 word...A M A Z I N G
I see some pants have liner inside in Woodland camo
@Devin K. You need to get the 6 color desert camo and 3 color Desert camo M65 jackets as well.
Have a bunch of 3 colors but the og507 and the 6 color versions were never actually adopted
I really need to get one of these jackets in OD or woodland, when I get more space etc. Good job on the video, btw.
I did have a version of it years ago made by brandit, but it wasn't very good.
The first M65 is OG107 pattern then you have OG507 and Woodland M65 jackets.
How does the m65 jacket stand up to the rain? Have you thought about doing a video on the first ECWCS parka which partially replaced the m65?
Yeah they suck compared to the m65 the seam seals come apart so easily and let water and they swish to much when you move.
@@DevinK I have one. I haven't tested it much. I also have 4 m65 jackets. I wanted to ask how the m65 handles rain.
@@bd3199 I mean pretty well for not being a water proof coat, but it’s more comfortable and more durable and quieter. It’s it’s really raining throw the poncho on
@@DevinK ok, I have no experience using either in the rain. I used my north face parka while hiking in the snow and mud. It's a once in a blue moon event that we get snow in the bay area. I had wind coming in through my hood making me feel colder. I think that the ECWCS parka and maybe the m65 would've been better. The m65 is a little on the heavy side though.
@@bd3199 m65 was enough for Vietnam the rainiest war america has participated in
Hi there, out of interest, what is the Fostex copy like? I have 1980s service issue Woodland camo and 1990s DCU versions, but fancy the black one as well when I want to stay low profile! Is the Fostex made of polycotton or Nyco? Thanks!
No idea on the particular brand but most of the commercial ones suck
Im confused about something, did they wear the M65 jacket with the M65 field pants or did they wear the M65 over the BDU? And if they did just wear it with the m65 pants, what would be under the jacket?
Well the m65 came out before the bdu and it was often worn over the standard uniform and often worn alone
The pants were rarely worn at all unless it got really cold because they were very heavy. Pretty much issued only in Germany and Alaska. I purchased a pair and wore them for Reforger 75. But we came back before it got cold enough to really need them. The jackets were jackets. So worn over the uniform shirt.
Nice but... I think that the Nam era M65 field jackets tabs were in white color not "greenish" .. never mind it was Alpha, Gibraltar, Cheeroke, So-Sew, John Ownsby or some another manufacturer. Upper tabs ( with size , Contract No. manufacturer , etc.) were smaller . Anyway this jacket looks great , right color ( OG 107) right size of chest pockets... today market is full of rubish copies.. ( Rothco etc. ) Even Alpha is a far from "contract years" look and quality. Too bad, I can't see zipper manufacturer on this jacket. Is it a Conmar, General, Talon, Ideal, Scovill?
Scovill zipper
@@DevinK Great! Jacket is first class! It's hard to find a real one Those days . I got few authentic but my beloved one is father's M65 from 1969. No damage, functional as new. I sold my M43 and m51 long time ago together with my m51 field trousers an m51 fishtail parka. What a mistake but.. in the meantime I bought two pairs ( new) of utility pants og 107 ( all cotton) dated 1964. and 1966. 36X33 ;) I don't make same mistake anymore. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Would you ever sell your woodland cammo jacket?
Which one
@@DevinK the woodland cammo from the 90's, it's a medium regular correct?
@@frankcastle3827 all of mine are a medium regular but I have like 70 m65’s
@@DevinK holy shit haha well I was mostly talking about the woodland cammo one you had.. Bdu one. That one is dope! The 2nd one you showed in the video
Brass zippers are post VN period 80's no? I have a couple both early 80's. VN period do not have these
No brass can be found on a lot of dates
@@DevinK Note NATO on your tag!
84 dated?
@@reneblacky you can fine a lot of 80’s dates with brass zippers and nato was formed in the 50’s so I don’t know what, “noting that nato is on the tag” has to do with anything on this jacket.
@@DevinK okie I'll not bother you. I am a well known collector of lots of army stuff. all good master of none
Rambo jacket
That m65 in ucp is really ugly. Do you have it in 3 color desert camo?
Yeah I have 34 different m65’s
The M65 was the worst version of the classic Army field jacket. Sloppy looking. Velcro fasteners. Wrinkled hood stuffed in the back. Horrible rounded collar. Just awful.
Do you have a alternative?
