Last night as I was watching TV, it dawned on me that I could be removing the sequins from a newly purchased sweater. It did take a long time but was worth it. It was one I had ordered online and I did not notice the sequins. Then today, I finished up by putting a jacket zipper into a wrap cardigan that had a belt. Now I can wear it without the belt! You inspire me. Deb
THe turtleneck worn underneath the grey and white striped sweater looks fantastic. I know you aren't a big fan of things close to your neck but that combo is the best!
If the turtleneck is too tight, just cut the side seams from the bottom to the sleeves open and insert a strip of black knit. I do this all the time and it's a sportive look.
The red sweater looks like it may have been a theater costume. I have helped with middle school and high school plays and musicals and that look like something we would have done.
The red sweater under the striped one is a great combination, and the white top looks so much better with striped ribbing. Another excellent set of changes!
I remember purchasing a beautiful Jean style jacket made of a tapestry fabric that was beaded all over the front, of course some beads were missing, so I didn’t feel bad about removing the rest. I loved the jacket and wore it many years!
Catherine, I love your energy, your sense of fun, your humour and your generosity of spirit! You're my Canadian friend I've never met ❤. I started watching your channel, not being a sewing person and became hooked. Now I'm the proud owner of a Singer heavy duty sewing machine and matching serger. We don't have the calibre of thrifting shops yet in South Africa that you have access to. Here the items are mainly very worn and aimed at purchase by people with little money, unlike the beautiful garments you find. However, I have adapted some of my wardrobe items that had elements that I didn't like, and am chuffed to bits with that. My focus is to make dog clothing out of thrifted items, for my pet retail business. I've so far cut up old jeans and men's shirts and made the coolest jackets for my dogs and am in the process of making more for sale in my shop, as everyone has commented on how awesome the jackets are. I also made hundreds of blankets out of Mongolian fleece as gifts for our top clients and for sale in my shop. My new machines paid for themselves already. None of this would have happened without me stumbling onto your channel and you reaching out to me across the ocean. I only have one complaint: I only want to sew now.... I don't want to do anything else. How do I deal with that? 😂
@@katjabier4155 What an incredible letter! My goodness, I wish we lived closer so I could run over and give you a giant hug!! And I’d love to check out your shop! You are now my best friend in SA!
Try threading a needle with wooly nylon to repair holes in sweaters. It provides a soft, invisible finish! I've learned so much from your vlogs. Thank you!
Peace, love and quality! Love it. Sequins are easier to take off from the front. Snip each thread where it passes through the sequin which is on the face and not against the fabric. No chance of snipping the knit. And I love the idea of doing this in a tub. Love your videos!
I just love buying cheap charity shop clothes and making them look more like my style. I don't stress about cutting fabric because it only cost a pound and if it doesn't turn out right, well, it has given me something to do. Thank you for your tutorials, your tips are invaluable!
Lucky where I live in the USA used clothes like shirts/blouses/sweaters are usually like $8-10! Pants are often $15-20. And this is not consignment but regular old thrift shop (some of them here are charity shops, some of them here for profit shops selling second hand goods) Stuff used to be affordable until it got trendy to buy as much as you cut at thrift stores and then sell it online at a huge markup. The thrift stores realized they could be making more and raised prices... Meanwhile poor people like me are left out in the cold
Oh that's awful. I had no idea. People and their greed huh? Well, what happens in USA usually catches on here in Britain so my cheap fabric days are numbered. There are some charity shops here who are now claiming that they're 'vintage' and have quadrupled prices but usually a blouse will be £4 and jeans about £6. I usually get the sale stuff if it's just the fabric I'm after at like a pound. I'm sorry that some people's greed has robbed many of accessing a great resource.
Love what you did with the four items! I'm hoping you are recording SOME of your new sewing room set up. I could use some fresh ideas. Great video, even without your sewing machine this time. Thumbs up!
I purchased a fancy brand linen dress from a charity shop, wore it once and decided to remove a tab with buttons from the front. That’s when I discovered that the dress had been over dyed and left a lighter strip where the tab had been. Years later I t’s still hanging in my wardrobe waiting for inspiration!
Wow i had a bad feeling about the sequins, but it turned out alright in the end. I thought they were glue on and I was worried about your good judgment. Today i thrifted a blue blouse whose embellishments are just dreamy. I'm very thankful Edit for spelling
Love all your "undoing". The white and flowers one is definitely my favourite as well. Have been researching some of your videos earlier today to get inspiration for a top I need to make some changes to.
Try soaking the sweater with the green shading from sequins in borax overnight! I make a watery solution even adding my laudry soap If Im soaking more items or washing a load of similar clothes the next day. Then I dump the bucket in the washer. I had once watched a video making elegant ballroom dresses adding sequins and beads they used a kind of punch tool from underneath. They probably used that. You know I never measure my binding I make sure to have a long enough strip with a bit extra by eyeballing length. I sometimes use stretch hem lace to hem but more often I buy teen lace tops etc for the stretch lace or stretch velvet. I even just use t-shirts. Sometimes I don't cut my t-shirts on the bias. I cut them horizontally because if I'm kind trying to bind a lighter not stable knit I find using a bias that's more stable cut horizntally helps to give the shirt body. I mean it doesnt stretch out of shape sewing it on or wearing it. If you understand that. Ive shared projects on facebook groups and always get how much do you cut? How do you measure and my answer is I dont. I had a wing it mother but I did take very traditional courses offered through adult ed. My high school had classes every year and counselors often suggesting it but I dont want to be graded. In 7th grade I did my shift dress in 2 45 minute classes and the teacher seemed mad at me. I was making my own clothes by age 10 and doing the thrift upcycle since ??? first grade? She had me on a machine, her treadle at age 5. She showed us how to do evrything . Knitting, crochet, embroidery but I stuck to the machine the most. So often my answers are "im sewing to what I have", "sew to fit". I adjust to what I have in my stash. The removal tricks work great! A lot of fantastic clothing go ruind by bling in 80s! I am a bling person but like it more subtle! I do buy bling tshirts that have stuck on bling but they were the faded out graphic prints. I use those for front border plackets on tops I cut to make cardigans that I make them meet (I wear mine with a brooch in middle) to still see the graphic properly. Then use rest as cuffs, hems, neckline edge. We live in high desert so our spring is a bit cold always than the flat lands. I started turning thermals I ound at thrift to make little cardigans. I only sell local but those sold well! So I just said a lot about me. I keep debating doing my own youtube channel too! In part to do sew along videos for locals. I try doing lessons here with even at one time 4 machines set up but being in a smaller tourist town with half jobs store and restaurant retail no one could show up at any one time. I do teach indivicually but I give first few hours free. I need to check interest and if they cant commit they drop out. But if the do, they dont need me after a couple days. They have the entire interenet. Oh I had books from the 40s to 60s I bought to learn too. The 40s one was the best. Like 20 ways to make a pocket and more! Sadly I gave it away! I should have kept it!
Aww love your patience. And the grey stripe jumper is lovely. I also love Gilmore girls watched the whole series three times. Just listen to it whilst sewing
I often take a top like the orange-red and if I'm going to put it under something, I cut it off just under the bust line so there's not so much bulk .I have a selection of those!
You saved all of those from certain death in the landfill! 🥳🥳🥳🥳. Looks like the green “peace” came out just fine! Well done! Can’t wait to see the finished new sewing space. It’s so much work but so worth it!
I would never have thought to remove lol those sequins but great idea. The white top is brilliant, so much better. I can’t believe WHBM thought the red/black trim looked good with the white top. What an improvement? I would love to see your before and after on your new room and congrats on getting a new room
That red shirt may have been used for a theater production. From audience distance you can pull off lots of illusions. Gilmore Girls marathon. 😂 I can relate.
Way to not give up, Catherine! I felt your pain with the sequins. Glad to see the green dye came out of that sweater. It looks lovely. Can hardly wait to see your new sewing room! Cheering you on, with gratitude for all you share with, and teach us.
I've removed sequences pretty quickly by laying the sweater on a flat surface and running a utility knife blade under the sequence design. Keep design near edge of flat surface so you can hold the blade. For me, it works really well and quite fast. 😊
You really improved all of these! I agree the tomato turtleneck isn't the most flattering on you, but it's perfect under that no-more-sequins sweater (love the elbows!). It really works.
Great finds. They all came out so nice. You have given me some ideas on what to do with a knit skirt that has been in my pile. I can change out some trim. Great idea. I never once thought about taking off the sequence. That was a great find for the winter. Can't wait for your reveal
I know that all too well. I often like the shape and/or color, but there is some pointless nonsense on it. Unfortunately, removing it would destroy the fabric. Your tips help 🙏
Thank you so much Catherine for taking the time to film your beautiful creations …. especially whilst you are very busy setting up your new sewing room. Looking forward to seeing it 🧵📍🪡😊
Oh my goodness those sequins! I thought it was glitter. But I had no idea you could stitch a hole like that and it not be noticeable! Thanks for a great video and can’t wait for the sewing room reveal!
Did the word PEACE actually come out in the wash? I couldn't"t really see. I just removed fake leather from a top, it started at the side and was sown in (sort of like a patch) and it turned into a leather belt, unfortunately the fake leather just started peeling right off, and it was sown into the side! so I had to undo part of the side to remove all of it, and then run the sides through the serger. Fortunately, that saved that top, which I loved and fits me really well.
All of them items are so much better with the removal of the embellishments. My favorite is the white one with the new ribbing.....that one is great and I love the hem with the flower design.
I removed the sequin Christmas design from the front of a jumper I already had. Now I can wear it any time. It also took a long time to do but will be worth it in the long run.
Yay!! Excited to see the new sewing space! And, I really liked all of those sweaters. I'm a fan of an orange sort of color, including orange-red, so I loved that sweater, but I can totally understand if it isn't for you. Even, as you say, you donate the pieces that don't thrill you, they are now in a condition where they will be chosen and loved by someone else, not tossed in a landfill. So exciting!
Would you do a tutorial on the over-size hoodies or tee-shirts that are made with blocks of color? I would really appreciate your step-by-step with that.
Do you mean an explainer on the ones you see on Instagram where they cut wavy lines on two hoodies and sew them together? I’ve been wanting to give that a try!
I love your redos! I'm trying to figure out how to renovate my sewing space. I hope a video of your process might be in the future. I had another idea for a video-- could you do one about mending things to save them from the landfill? I have a favorite cashmere sweater that was ATTACKED by moths. Have you tried any of the visible mending techniques? Or ways to patch things? Your great sewing skills along with advice from a fashion perspective is so valuable.
This makes me so happy!! I love thrifting and have definitely bought things to "fix"... sometimes I end up ruining them, but have so much fun doing it! The thrill of the risk is half the fun!❤
When removing a delicate stitch like that of the sequins try using a surgical suture removal scissor it has a half moon cutout in the blade. It gives you the thinnest blade that raises the stitch away from the fabric.
Sometimes I have the opposite problem - I got a sweater or shirt I love to bits with a flaw like a small stain. That's when I wish I had some guidance on how to add some "stuff". Good video though, I've taken off stuff from op-shop bargains so many times!
Great video. I love them all, but I'm with you....the black and white top is my absolute favorite. You did an amazing job and kept four garments out of the landfill!!! Kudos to you. Thanks for another inspiring video.
If you wanted to be sure you didn’t see the beige on the outside you should have taken all the excess off the beige side. That way the stripe would have wrapped just a little bit to the inside.
That was satisfying to watch! If I need to do a lot of unpicking something or when I hand stitch down a quilt binding, I just do a bit every day. I have some hand arthritis so it works for me to not do it all in one big job, break it into small ones.
Great Ideas Catherine! Love the Black & White Top! I hope you film some of the Chaos that goes into setting up your new sewing room. I think many of us could use some inspiration to revamp our sewing areas.
I have a growing stack of knit items that have small holes. Thanks for taking a moment to show that you don't actually have to reknit the fabric flawlessly to close the hike effectively. Did I see correctly that you didn't pull all the weaving threads totally taut, but left them just slightly snug? I'm not even sure if I'm explaining that well enough. 😅

So glad the green stain washed out of the gray striped sweater! That one was my fave & it also works well with the red t-neck underneath.
Hooray for the rescue of garments. You are a trooper!!

lots of fun today. Thanks

Thanks for the great video! Looking forward to seeing your new sewing room
OMG that red shirt! Hilarious 😂
outstanding! thank you for all the behind the scenes tutorial! well done!
That t-shirt is wonderful!
Wow another great video!
Awesome fixes!! Love these!
I love the redos.
You do things and change things that wouldn’t even occur to me, and then! You do such a terrific job when you do. Great items.
Excellent projects! Maybe your next group sewing resort - you should include this as one of your projects with the group.
@@CatherineSews I prefer the blocks rather than the wavy lines, though.
Great idea for thrifting.
Congrats for a new sewing room ! Just can't wait to se it. Happy New Year Catherine !!! ❤
So excited to see your sewing space! Maybe I'll get some ideas for mine. I thought all the tops you did looked great after you improved them!
A new sewing space? How wonderful. We all look forward to seeing it! And your makeovers (unders?) are terrific!
❤ from Duncan!
Oh thank you! BTW I love Duncan! I thrift there a couple times a year
@CatherineSews I'll fill you in on all the best places! And some secret deals...
@ Yes please!
You got new glasses! Very nice
The turtleneck under is SO cute! Those are definitely better! That was very inspiring! Thank you!
Fun upcycle! Good luck with the room, can't wait to see it. Meanwhile I am doing my best to reorganize my sewing/craft room, so it at least feels new!
I love your redos! I'm trying to figure out how to renovate my sewing space. I hope a video of your process might be in the future. To cover spots just add embroidery. I do it to my clothes all the time.
What a motivating video!! Thank you.
Great video. I love them all, but I'm with you....the black and white top is my absolute favorite. You did an amazing job and kept four garments out of the landfill!!! Kudos to you. Thanks for another inspiring video.
You are hilarious and entertaining while teaching us how to sew😂

That was satisfying to watch! If I need to do a lot of unpicking something or when I hand stitch down a quilt binding, I just do a bit every day. I have some hand arthritis so it works for me to not do it all in one big job, break it into small ones.
Great Ideas Catherine! Love the Black & White Top! I hope you film some of the Chaos that goes into setting up your new sewing room. I think many of us could use some inspiration to revamp our sewing areas.
I'm planning on making a video about my new sewing room soon!
Great video! So many good ideas!
Great job. And congrats on the 100K.
It was a wild ride getting to 100k! Thanks for coming along for the journey.
Wow, I love all of the items that you changed up and the red turtle neck could be great on you under a jacket or sweater.
Great idea with the upcycle ideas. That lovely linen top with the snaps could have been made into a great short sleeve top!
Great job. I actually love re-making clothes to a new life so really enjoyed this video. Love your new creations too!!
