Also, for weavers, a machine with good ‘punching’ power is better. So many modern machines have all plastic parts inside and just don’t have the ability to ‘punch’ through thicker fabric (or multiple layers of medium fabric). So often, older basic machines that have metal insides can get through multiple folded layers in a handwoven hem for instance.

That is a really good point. I have seen the very "cheap" machines and I wouldn't bother. I should have mentioned that in the video!

@@KellyCasanova Even high end machines are often plastic inside now. It is a shame. Janome used to have a small basic machine that could still punch through multiple layers of denim. I can’t remember the model and I gave it to a cousin to learn to sew on. Good sturdy machine.

I bought a more updated Janome but still kept my old one. I don't bother to use the new one now and have gone back to my old one. My older one is more basic and is all I need.

@@KellyCasanova The interesting thing is the very high end machines are now turning to plastic inside as well.

For weavers i would suggest a machine designed for quilting to allow for greater needle clearance.
I had a janome it was ok

Will be looking forward to this series. I’d like to be able to hem my towels, but I’ve never used a sewing machine and I don’t have any room to leave it out when not in use. Need something small and basic.

Yes, Janomes are a great brand.
For sewing handwovens, I'd want a zigzag and straight stitch. And depending on what else you may wish to do a buttonhole stitch would be useful.
On "newer" machines, some of the great features (but not necessary)
    - needle threader
    - needle up/down
    - thread cutter (dont have one on any of my machines)
    - speed control
    - start/stop button availability instead of using foot pedal
The speed control is especially useful when teachin kids to sew

I have to admit, I wouldn't mind having the needle up/down feature, it's still a luxury I can easily do without but it would be nice 😆

I agree with you, Kelly, a basic machine is fine, even preferred!

Hi Kelly thanks for your video, just not sure if you are aware the video is hazy. So can’t see what you are doing very well.

That's strange Michelle, the video is playing very clear for me 🤔

@@KellyCasanova you can still watch it it’s just foggy hazy. I don’t have issues watching other videos because I did wonder if it was on my end.
